Teachers take note of this gem 4 out of 5 stars.

Looking for a new way to make Mark Twain come alive in your classroom? Help your students travel back in time by engaging in some of the wonderful projects in The American Boy's Handy Book by Daniel Carter Beard. Aside from illustrating some of Twain's work, Beard was an avid educator who also was a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America. He wrote their first Boy Scout Handbook and was a lifelong advocate of making your own fun. This treasure of a book will suggest projects for your class which will help them understand the world of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Make kites in the shape of stars, turtles, shields and dragons. Build your own giant bubble machine or a Puss in Boots puppet show (script is included). Avoid the more violent blow guns and fighting kites but enjoy the simplicity and just plain fun of this book. Along the way, your students will have a new appreciation for Mark Twain's world and the boys he wrote about.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1882, this is a wealth of projects and games, with practical directions on how to make them, by one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America. The ultimate pre-TV, anti-couch potato activity book, it answers the question, "What's there to do?"

EXCELLENT TEACHING TOOL 5 out of 5 stars.

My First Book Of MazesMy First Book Of Tracing (Kumon Workbooks)My Book Of Numbers 1-30 (Kumon Workbooks)
I purchased the Kumon Mazes, Tracing and Number Workbooks for my granddaughter. We'd already begun working on phonics with another series of books, but I must say the Kumon books are superior to any others we've used. She enjoyed the exercises so much, she wanted to finish the entire book in one sitting. Her writing and manual dexterity improved very rapidly. I highly recommend this series.

Great learning tool 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old is excited to do a section everyday. It only takes about 10 minutes to do each section. The pictures are great and it is a lot easier for him then tracing dashes. I started with the tracing book and bought several other books after he completed the first one. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This book gives children the opportunity to learn reading and writing numbers from 1 to 30. Exercises progress slowly from tracing over numbers to writing them from scratch. Children will be able to easily learn the shapes and concepts of numbers by tracing and writing numbers again and again. Consider this a foundational book for all mathematical study.

For Kids, This Book is Great! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

At first my seven year-old son, a devout Captain Underpants fan, was doubtful as to whether or not to get this book. He saw the so-so ratings on Amazon and didn't think he was going to enjoy it. But upon purchasing a used version of the book, he found he loved all the activities included.

Inside he found stickers, crossword puzzles, word finds, jokes, a comic: "The Bride of Harry Potty," and step-by-step instructions on how to draw the Captain Underpants characters. It runs about 96 pages, but it's chock full of fun.

Now, don't buy this expecting another Captain Underpants adventure; it's an activity book. If your child is looking for something to ease the wait for the next Captain Underpants book, give this a try.

Editorial Review:

You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll wet your pants with joy when you read Dav Pilkey's All New Captain Underpants Extra-Crunchy Book O' Fun 2. Filled with crossword puzzles, word finds, mazes and more, this is one book o' fun that Captain Underpants fans can't do without! Learn how to draw your favorite characters, tell cheesy jokes, and even make your own silly Captain Underpants story. Best of all, you'll get a brand-new 56 page comic called "The Night of the Terror of the Revenge of the Curse of the Bride of Hairy Potty," featuring Captain Underpants, Super Diaper Baby, and Diaper Dog!

This is a great look and find book that both boys and girls will enjoy. Young readers will love reliving the story of the movie, and the illustrations are wonderful. It's hard to believe that cars can have such wonderful expressions!

There are hours of fun to be found in this book with Lightning McQueen and all the "folks" in Radiator Springs!

Editorial Review:

Ready, set, GO! Lightning McQueen, the rookie hot-shot race car, is screaming his way down the track on his way to winning the Piston Cup. But when he gets stuck in a slow little town called Radiator Springs, McQueen must learn a valuable lesson about friendship—fast. This beautifully illustrated Read-Aloud Storybook is the complete retelling of Disney presentation of a Pixar film latest computer-animated film, Cars.

Funny jokes for 4-6 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My older niece, 6 turning 7, is a serious sort so I wanted to get her joke books for her birthday. Her sister is 3 years.

I checked out a bunch of books from the library and online reviews of those and other books.

Of all I looked at, this one is funny, cute and endearing. The girls think it's hilarious. The pictures are very sweet and add to the jokes for non-readers.

It's missing the tacky qualities of many, many kids books of being so-so jokes, or not so nice jokes, or too scary for little people, or needing whole concept explanations to make sense.

It's got flap pages that you open to see the punchline of the joke. It's for a little younger than most joke books (which would be best for age 7 and up). This was one of the very few good for 4 and up, but actually funny jokes. Many are based on people's names which they didn't know, so on first pass there was some explaining to do, for instance that Duane is a name...but at least I didn't have to explain about Dracula and blood for them to understand.

As other reviewers have commented, it is a small number (10) of jokes, they are mostly name-based (not all), and it's in physical style of a younger age book with thicker pages, bright colored straight forward drawings (see front cover), and flaps.

If you get it - enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Pull back the flaps and find out each hilarious punch line in this classic collection of knock-knock jokes!

Baseball, Father, Team 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Reviewed by Ben Weldon (age 10) for Reader Views (6/08)

"The Big Field" by Mike Lupica is definitely a book for baseball lovers. Follow Keith "Hutch" Hutchison as he and his team push their way to the finals. Can Hutch overcome problems with a teammate? Will Hutch's father ever take notice of him? Will his team get to play on "the big field"?

Keith Hutchison, known to his friends as Hutch, is a fourteen-year-old baseball fanatic. He pretty much thinks of nothing but baseball. He has been shortstop "forever." He is the team captain of the Boynton Beach Post 226 Cardinals, and his team has a shot of making it to the State Championship. When Darryl "D-will" Williams, a star shortstop, moves to town, Hutch is forced to become second baseman. He makes the sacrifice for the good of the team but it is with grief and several fist fights.

As if it weren't bad enough to lose his position, Hutch finds his father playing ball with D-will. Hutch feels betrayed. His father, a former baseball player, won't even watch a baseball game with Hutch, let alone play ball with him. He barely speaks to Hutch and rarely even attends his games. Why is his father like this? Will Hutch ever be able to have a relationship with his father?

Full of baseball jargon, this book is all baseball and lacks a strong plot. Readers who do not know much about baseball, baseball teams and baseball players might feel a bit lost.

I would recommend "The Big Field" to people who want to read the sports page - this book is for them!

Editorial Review:

Playing shortstop is a way of life for Hutch—not only is his hero, Derek Jeter, a shortstop, but so was his father, a former local legend turned pro. Which is why having to play second base feels like demotion to second team. Yet that’s where Hutch ends up after Darryl “D-Will” Williams, the best shortstop prospect since A-Rod, joins the team. But Hutch is nothing if not a team player, and he’s cool with playing in D-Will’s shadow—until, that is, the two shortstops in Hutch’s life betray him in a way he never could have imagined. With the league championship on the line, just how far is Hutch willing to bend to be a good teammate?
