Grandma Rose to the Rescue 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

When Simon is teased by his friends, Grandma rose compares teasing to fishing hooks and shows Simon how he doesn't have to get caught up in the mean game his friends are playing. Simon's Hook is an excellent way to teach children to be more resilient.
The cover (not yet shown today) has a red background and Simon is sitting on a hook under water as if it was a swing. Fish swim about and all the characters are fanciful and smiling.

The basic story includes a "bad hair day." When Simon's sister can't find her gum, she finds that it is in Simon's hair. Unfortunately she has to cut off a lot of his hair to get the gum out. This story will be very familiar to children. I remember this happening to me when I fell asleep while chewing gum.

Simon is doing quite well while wearing a hat, but when he falls and his hat falls off, all the children start to call him lawn mower head. As he runs home he accidentally runs into Grandma Rose. Simon tells her what happened and tells her about the teasing.

"But why do you bite? "
"Bite?" cried Simon.
"I didn't bite anyone!"

After going into her garage, Grandma Rose returns with a fishing line. A piece of paper is attached to the end of the hook and a cat is trying to bat at the paper. By waving the paper around for the cat, Grandma Rose shows how the cat bats at the paper. Then, she dangles the paper in front of Simon. Then Simon catches the paper too.

"You're not a free fish anymore."
"But what else can I do?"

Then over a glass of lemonade and a few cookies, Grandma Rose tells Simon a fish story. The next two pages are filled with fish thinking, saying things or biting at pieces of paper with put downs and teases written on them.

I had to laugh because some of the fish are quite adorable (the "peace" fish named Harmony Hippy Fish is a hoot) and the entire story is rather cute. At the end of the book all the fish are drawn in one picture and their names are listed next to them. The shark is of course called: "tiny." They also have some witty comments that one could consider to be a snappy retort. At the bottom of the ocean we see an Instead of Biting do this sign. It lists five ways to avoid getting caught by teasing.

There are pages and pages of fishes saying various things that are quite amusing. Even I was laughing out loud at a few of the fish stories.

When Simon returns to the park he has a new attitude and his friends enjoy his new witty remarks. He no longer takes them seriously and can enjoy the attention.

Karen Gredig Burnett writes highly creative books and Laurie Barrows knows how to draw the characters Karen is talking about. So, together they create a magic all of their own.

If your child is struggling with teasing, this book will empower them and show them that they can laugh at difficulty and embrace change. I might even start using a few of the witty comments in this book when my husband teases me. This book is definitely not just for younger kids. It can also empower adults and teenagers.

Editorial Review:

Simon is having a bad day; a bad hair day. First his sister gives him a strange hair cut, then his friends tease him. Simon doesn't know what to do. Lucky for him he runs into Grandma Rose. After listening to his sorrowful story she helps him learn an important life lesson; how to handle teases and put-downs. By comparing teases to fishing hooks she tells him a tale of how fish learned not to bite. With fanciful characters such as Harmony Hippy Fish, Freddie Fang, Max the Mouse Fish and more, Simon learns that he, too, can swim free from the teasing hooks that people toss his way.

Great book for children of many ages 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book thinking it might be too young for my 9-year-old daughter. However, when it arrived it was pored over by not only my 9-year-old, but her 13-year-old brother as well. The copy I sent to my sister's children (ages 5 and 7) was also well-received.

I recommend this book as a fun tool to teach and to re-enforce proper comma usage. It is a subtle and pain-free way to influence your child's writing skills for good. Buy the book. You won't regret it.

Not only for kids for also for young adults 5 out of 5 stars.

I am and English teacher in Mexico City and I bought "Eats, shoots & leaves" to use it with my students (25-30 y.o.) who were careless with their punctuation. After reading it they finally understood in a clear and fun way, how important punctuation is. They all enjoyed the book. I do too! It's a great tool for this purpose. I fully recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Young and young-at-heart sticklers, unite! Lynne Truss and illustrator Bonnie Timmons provide hilarious proof that punctuation really does matter.

Illuminating the comical confusion the lowly comma can cause, this new edition of Eats, Shoots & Leaves uses lively, subversive illustrations to show how misplacing or leaving out a comma can change the meaning of a sentence completely.

This picture book is sure to elicit gales of laughter—and better punctuation—from all who read it.

Sweet story, expressive illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There is a sweetness to this illustrated storybook about a young boy whose siblings all know what their passion is, but he doesn't know his. This book is best for kids unsure of what they want to be when they grow up. That description fits almost everyone! When young Linden feels anxious that he hasn't found his niche, readers will undoubtedly relate.

Linden's older brother Tony and scientist dad gently help him search for his "it," his passion. They remind him to have patience and trust in God to reveal this special talent. "Just keep having faith," Dad tells Linden. The boy finds his "it" during a trip to the dentist.

This true story was written by the head coach of the 2006 Super Bowl champions.

Expressive watercolors fill the pages with color from edge to edge. The loving African-American family is realistically rendered. Illustrator Amy June Bates has a knack for showing movement and action, and depicting real people.

Under the dust jacket the cover has the exact same artwork on the front and photo of Tony Dungy on the back.

Editorial Review:

Tony Dungy's little brother, Linden, is a third grader who is having a bad day at school. Linden is the youngest of the Dungy family and the least motivated because he hasn't found "it." In a family where everyone seems to have found their special talent, all Linden knows is that he wants to make people happy.

With encouragement from his parents, a helping hand from his older brother Tony, and inspiration from God, Linden learns that if he dreams big and has faith, he can do anything!

Great books, great deal! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter loves Karen Katz books and will bring the whole box over to us to read many times a day. Some of the flaps are tearing off, but that's because she carries them around by the flaps sometimes. She loves the colors and the babies!

LOVE THESE 5 out of 5 stars.

These books are amazing! Our six month old is fascinated by the flaps on the books. They have stood up so far to lots of tugging, pulling, and gumming. Highly recommended!

These are my 11 month old son's favorite books. He loves to participate by opening the flaps to see what is hidden behind them.

Adorable, interactive books! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 9-month-old loves these books! The flaps make them interactive and the illustrations are very colorful. Also, there are a variety of nationalities included. I highly recommend them (but be sure to supervise since it would be easy to bend or tear the flaps).

BEST BOOKS EVER 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 y.o. can write his numbers! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have been using Kumon workbooks since my son was about 3 years and 2 months. We have worked on the books in the recommended order. His tracing has improved and he has learned to write his numbers and letters without having to trace them!

EXCELLENT TEACHING TOOL 5 out of 5 stars.

My First Book Of MazesMy First Book Of Tracing (Kumon Workbooks)My Book Of Numbers 1-30 (Kumon Workbooks)
I purchased the Kumon Mazes, Tracing and Number Workbooks for my granddaughter. We'd already begun working on phonics with another series of books, but I must say the Kumon books are superior to any others we've used. She enjoyed the exercises so much, she wanted to finish the entire book in one sitting. Her writing and manual dexterity improved very rapidly. I highly recommend this series.

Excellent book, but inadequate without a photocopier.. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very good.

There are plenty of Kumon books for numbers ( 1-30, 1-70,1-120, 1-150 etc). While it is a legitimate wishful thinking of every parent that their kids be good at numbers of over 100, my suggestion is that the kids have to first get past this book on numbers before stepping into others.

My kid is in prek at a Montessory school, So my purpose of buying the book was to reinforce what is taught at school.

The book is very good in a way it takes the kid through the complexity of numbers in a clean fashion.First a generic drawing connecting the numbers etc.. However the biggest drawback I found in the book is the number of pages. There is virtually no repetition possible if the kid is not getting past a set of numbers.

I will use number 2 as an example from a kid's perspective

Exercise goes like this :
Chapter 11 :
1,2,3 (the kid writes 4 times)
2,3,4 (the kid writes 4 times)
Chapter 12:
3,4,5 (the kid writes 4 times and so on )

Problem is the kid gets to write, for example a difficult number like 2 total of 8 times. Again the kid gets a glimpse of number 2 in chapter 15 ( assume this happens after few days where kid has forgotten how to write it)
Chapter 15:
1-4 ( write 3 times)

And then the chapters pretty much assumes that the kid knows the numbers and gets into exercises like matching the numbers with number of fruits etc.

Similar to most kids, my kid had problems writing 7,9 and 10 ( In spite of my kid writing at school) .I had to make between 3-5 copies of every exercise and asked her to write it out,so she became familiar and ready for the subsequent exercises.

If the kids dont grasp 1-10 effectively, the whole subsequent exercises till 30 goes in vain.

And if you need a photocopier , then the purpose of buying a book is defeated, afterall there are so many websites from where you can download similar lessons!

Kumon Publishers, you are doing an awesome job ,but please do not do penny pinching...Charge few dollars more and make the book over 200 pages with several optional exercises.!

ALWAYS A JOY TO READ. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

To be frank, I get a kick out of Silverstein's work. It is always a bit quirky, always takes a couple of readings to really "get," and is very entertaining while being quite insightful as to human nature. This work is no different from his other works, same quality, same odd way of looking at life, same delightful black and white drawings. Publisher's Weekly got it pretty right here, in their usual, rather snotty way, which is one of the few reviews I have ever agreed with them on. (except their little shot at some of his art that they felt may no be appropriate for kids...obviously the author of that review has never been around kids very much). This work consists of 171 pages of poetry rhymes and drawings. I first read Silverstein in Playboy magazine years and years ago when I wasted my time with such publications. I did not particularly care for him them, but over the years have developed quite a like for his work. I truely love this book and do highly recommend it.

Millie McDeevit screamed a scream
So loud it made her eyebrows steam.
She screamed so loud
Her jawbone broke,
Her tongue caught fire,
Her nostrils smoked...

Poor Screamin' Millie is just one of the unforgettable characters in this wondrous new book of poems and drawings by the creator of Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. Here you will also meet Allison Beals and her twenty-five eels; Danny O'Dare, the dancin' bear; the Human Balloon; and Headphone Harold.

Fun for all!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased two of these books for my two 3 yr. old boys. They have really enjoyed them. We do about one project a day most days from this and several pages of My First Book Of Tracing (Kumon Workbooks) for their "homework" The first few days were kinda crazy and one of them actually cut the palm of my hand. They just wanted to cut whatever (and draw wherever on the other book) I thought these were a horrible idea until the third day. Both of them seemed to finally understand what was going on and settled down. Now they look forward to it. We made rockets today and they "flew" them all over the house! I also now have a rule that after we do our work properly, we can cut other paper however we want. That has been very successful. In regards to the actual workbook - the paper quality is very high which makes holding the paper easier. It doesn't flop around. It is also shiny and slick so you can tape and remove tape with out damaging the picture. The colors are bright and very appealing to my children. I am very happy with this product.

Editorial Review:

The First Steps series is designed for young children, aged 2 and up, who have never used a workbook before. The colorful and easy exercises in each First Steps workbook provide toddlers with the opportunity to become comfortable with the tools that are essential in every school - scissors, glue, pencils and crayons. These workbooks also teach the motor skills and problem-solving abilities that are a child's First Steps toward success. Ages: 2 + Manufacturer: Marlon Creations

Fun, Fun and FUN! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have forgotten all about this book until someone mentioned it in a bookclub that I belong to. She reads it to her son every night. And I remember how much fun I had reading it to my nephew 13 years ago on vacation, so I scurried online and ordered a copy of it. My sons (even though they are probably too old for it) request it every night since it arrived. They think it is a hoot and a hollar. And they beg me to keep turning the pages (I must be raising some fearless boys!) and when they get to the end, they giggle with glee.

My advice is, don't wait to buy this book. Get it now and enjoy some reading time with your children. This book is just absolutely fun and I know that it will keep my sons interested in reading. At least they'll remember mom struggling to keep the pages closed ...

Editorial Review:

Many, many adults name this book as their favorite Little Golden Book. Generations of kids have interacted with lovable, furry old Grover as he begs the reader not to turn the page—for fear of a monster at the end of the book. “Oh, I am so embarrassed,” he says on the last page . . . for, of course, the monster is Grover himself! This all-time favorite is now available as a Big Little Golden Book—perfect for lap-time reading.
