What a HOOT!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I remember this poem in song form from my childhood. I hadn't thought of it in years, until my grandson told me his teacher had read it to him in his pre-k class. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon.com. I was thrilled to see it's large size, bright colors, crazy pictures, the old lady's stomach expanding to accomodate each new animal. I wasn't bothered (as a child) by the phrase "perhaps she'll die," but I imagine my grandson will enjoy some of the "asides" that rhyme with "die." This book will be a gift to my grandson for his fourth birthday in a few days. I am looking forward to reading it to him! Or should I say, singing it to him!!

Love this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Loved this book as a kid - so had to buy it for my baby.

disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.

I don't remember if there were size dimensions given for this book, but I expected it to be twice the size. I have other books from this author and publisher and they are nice and big and easy for me to use in class. This book is really too small for me to read to my class. I am sadly disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Inventive die-cut artwork offers young readers of all ages a rollicking, eye-popping version of the well-loved poem about the old lady who swallowed a fly, a spider, a bird, a cat, a dog, and worse."

Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I just happened upon this book at the bookstore, one of the employees highly recommended it to me. It was magical; the writing was to me reminiscient of the works of Mark Twain. I am a history buff so the fact that it it takes place in South Africa during World War II was a plus to me. The only (slight) criticism I have is that it is a very long book (500+ pages) and I have a bit of ADD. This does not stop me from giving this book five stars.

Editorial Review:

In 1939, hatred took root in South Africa, where the seeds of apartheid were newly sown. There a boy called Peekay was born. He spoke the wrong language–English. He was nursed by a woman of the wrong color–black. His childhood was marked by humiliation and abandonment. Yet he vowed to survive–he would become welterweight champion of the world, he would dream heroic dreams.
But his dreams were nothing compared to what awaited him. For he embarked on an epic journey, where he would learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the mystical power that would sustain him even when it appeared that villainy would rule the world: The Power of One.

Jumbo Coloring Book 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a great coloring book ! It has four different books all in one. From "Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars." The only thing I wish is that Cars was a bit longer. It seems shorter than the others. Overall it is a great coloring book.

Great coloring book for everyone 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for everyone, not only kids, to color and enjoy. At the top of each page is a line describing what is going on in the picture. That is very insightful for children as well as adults who may not remember everything that happened in the movie. The images are wonderful. There are pages that don't require many colors and then there are other pages where there are more items on the page. In the section for the movie "Cars", the cars are turned sideways so they can fit on the page which is great if only one person is coloring in the book at that time but a little difficult if more than one person is coloring. But the great thing for that is the pages are easily taken out of the book by the "tear and share" line.
Lots of pages, lots of choices, overall a great coloring book.

quirky yet sentimental 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

let me just say first off (and some of you may boo at me for this) that i am not a big fan of poetry, especially those that don't rhyme, layered with so much metaphor wrapped in some sort of old english language. those of you who can appreciate those, know i'm more than eager to submit in the "im not worthy! im not worthy!" throes. call it barbaric or just plain shallow, but i'd rather stick to the sing-songy rhymes of my elementary days.

now, saying that i absolutely loved Where the Sidewalk Ends should not be construed as a statement that Silverstein's work is shallow. piddling my knowledge might be about bodies of poetry, in whatever form, this one thing i am sure of: that though this book can be read to kids (and [gasp!] can actually be understood and enjoyed by them), it somehow still manages to deliver punchlines that could draw forth a surprised smile or chuckle from an adult--at least those not totally drowning in cynicism or morbid depression. but who knows...

a lot of the poetry here are funny (not outright hilarious, more like plain goofy), and yet come to think of it, still some of those are actually quite sad, with undertones about life and life experiences we take for granted. like the "Snowman", "Invention", "What's in the Sack?", "I Won't Hatch!", "The Garden", "The Little Blue Engine", and even the subtly poignant "Love".

whether you actively seek a moral in any of the poems or just want to go for some light reading, this book (in my opinion) is sure to leave you with a wistful feeling. exactly about what...well, i can't say. but i loved it. and for me that's more than okay.

Editorial Review:

Enter the world of Shel Silverstein…

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Shel Silverstein's most popular book, Where the Sidewalk Ends is now available in a special edition containing the classic hardcover book and a CD of highlights from his Grammy Award-winning album. This is a wonderful gift and keepsake for Shel Silverstein fans, old and new.

From the outrageously funny to the quietly affecting -- and touching on everything in between -- here are poems and drawings that illuminate the remarkable world of the well-known folksinger, humorist and creator of The Giving Tree.

Maniac Magee 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Jeffery Magee is a twelve-year-old kid who's parents died in the famous P&W trolley crash. His aunt and Uncle can't agree on anything, not even Jeffery. When they come to the school choir concert they sit on opposite sides of the bleachers, at the end of the song Jeffery is screaming for them to talk. Then he starts running, away from school, away from his aunt and uncle, away from Holidaysburg. Into Two Mills.
Upon arriving in Two Mills Jeffery gets himself into the furious fight between blacks and whites. When he starts living with a family of blacks, the Beales, he finds himself in for alot of trouble, especially from Mars Bars Thompson. Eventually Jeffery, now Maniac Magee, ralizes the trouble he has caused and runs to East end, the white side of town. There he starts living with the Mcnabs, but soon sees that he's only causing trouble there too. In the end Maniac is living in a buffalo pen at the zoo when Amanda Beale and Mars Bars Thompson convince Maniac to live with them in West end, because they don't care if he's white, he is their friend.
Pg 182:
"Let's go."
"Where?"
"Home."
"Who's?"
"Mine. Yours. Ours. Come on, I'm sleepy"...
He knew that finally, truly, at long last, someone was calling him home.
I think this best examplifies the authors purpose in writing this book by saying that if you keep trying and don't give up you will be acceptted no matter what. Also that no matter how the world looks there is always someone who cares about you.
I think that this book is a great contribution to society. It teaches us that growing up can be hard, but there is always something good waiting for you on the other side. Also, it helps us understand that if we preservere we will always make it.
We will make it through life, good or bad, depending on our choices and I think that this book is a great example of that. overall this is a book that anyone who has questions about growing up should read.

Editorial Review:

After his parents die, Jeffrey Lionel Magee's life becomes legendary as he accomplishes athletic feats and other extraordinary exploits that awe his contemporaries. Paperback.

Creative fun -- great gift idea! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is our new favorite birthday gift for our seven-year old daughter's friends. We love this book! It has great starts for fun and creative drawings that children can make. Great for the "established artist" or non-drawers! We look forward to trying out more of these books.

Great fun 5 out of 5 stars.

This doodle book is great fun for my daughter. It is a good item to keep in the car so she can pick it up and doodle a page or 2. I would say take it on a trip, but it is soo big!?! My daughter is 11 and likes art; this would be great for young children as well.

Doodle book 1 out of 5 stars.

This doesn't look to be as much fun as the "Doodle All Year" book so I returned it.

Fabulous book for a plane trip or anywhere! Now we're giving them as birthday presents. 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book to take on a long international plane ride with my daughter, age six. This kept her busy for hours on the plane and during downtime on the trip. But here's the thing: it kept me busy too! So much fun. And it is HUGE--we still have many more pages to color.

My daughter decided that she wants to give this book to friends on birthdays too.

Editorial Review:

Renowned children's book illustrator Taro Gomi invites kids of all ages to not only color, but also draw, imagine, and create. Unfinished pictures and intriguing prompts foster children's powers of visualization, and at nearly 400 pages, this book provides plenty of room to stretch the imagination.

Too Many Toys 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

David Shannon is amazing! I am a Librarian for an elementary school and his books are always among the favorites, and "Too Many Toys" is no different. He has a great way of relating to children. All children relate to this story because we all tend to hang on to things that don't even work just for the sentimentality of it. The art work is delightful (as always), and the combination of the story and the pictures just works so wonderfully. I really cannot think of any of his books that I would not fully recommend!

Too Many Toys 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Spencer had too many toys. His parents gave him toys. His grandparents gave him toys. Even the dentist gave him toys. Toys were everywhere and there was no where to walk. Eventually, the mess became too much. Finally, Spencer's Mom said he had to clean up.

Too Many Toys is a story that will resonate with adults. We try to give our kids and grandkids all the best but sometimes we go overboard. The simple basics always win out in the end.

This adult theme is mostly lost on the little ones who read this book. Moreover, the scary faces with huge popping out eyes and teeth are somewhat scary.

Editorial Review:

Spencer has too many toys! His father trips over them, his mother falls over them, and the house is overflowing with junk. Now its time to give some of the mountain of goodies away, but Spencer finds it hard. In the end, he fills a box, but decides the one toy he can't part with is the box!

Don't just learn your letters—build them!

It's a book, it's a puzzle—and best of all, it's a way to learn the ABCs. Sara Midda's delightful How to Build an A comes with 11 fully safety-tested EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) pieces that can be pushed together to build all the letters of the alphabet, uppercase and lowercase. In the accompanying book, Midda, the British artist known for her charming watercolors, shows children the way. Each page introduces a new letter—A is for Apple, B is for Boy—and is illustrated with Midda's tiny people, who are shown comically hauling and heaving the pieces into place. Children will love the hands-on fun of bringing the letters of the alphabet to life. And parents will appreciate the mesh bag that comes with the kit, so all the parts stay together and can be used over and over again. For preschool and up.

great story 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this story and was planning on getting it for my daughter at some point- when I saw it as a board book I decided to get it right away! The book seems well made and has nice bold, vibrant illustrations. The only negative thing I noticed about it- and I noticed it right away when I received it- is the fact that it has pointy edges. Most board books are rounded at the corners. It's not a huge deal, but for young kids/babies who are clumsy and put everything in their mouths, it seems like a poor design.

Editorial Review:

In You Are Special, Max Lucado tells the story of Punchinello, the wooden Wemmick who believes that he isn’t good enough because of what others say about him. When will Punchinello realize how truly special he is?

You Are Special is a beautiful story that reminds us that we are precious to God just the way we are. It is through spending daily time with him that we begin to see ourselves through his eyes. This is an important truth that children and parents need to know: God loves us even though we make mistakes and have flaws!

This best-seller has sold millions of copies and is now available in a limited, ten-year anniversary edition. The accompanying CD includes a special reading of the story by Max Lucado and music by Christian artist Phil Keaggy.
