Wish I had this book when I was a kid! 5 out of 5 stars.

Camp Out! is full of creative and informative lessons and fun activities. Truly a unique book. Any kid from video game addict to natural born scout will find this book engaging! it contains kid-level explanations without talking down to kid-level. As an adult I enjoyed reading this book and felt the cartoons weren't too cutesy. Good for both boys and girls.

Typical 3 out of 5 stars.

Some parts of this book are quite interesting in its ideas for activities. All the games described are basically hide & seek while making animal sounds. the recipes are easy and fun for kids, the packing list and common sense tips are straightforward, easy for kids to follow or read. the songs and stories are typical, been there, done that, nothing new. Illustrations are quirky and cute.
reccomend for the 1st time camper or if you want to give your kids something to read before the trip.

A fun read. Informative. Have been an outdoorsman for 40 years and I learned some new skills from this book.

Content is aimed primarily at youth of years-gone-by... I smiled plenty of times while reading it.

Back to Nature 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this for my 16 year old son. We recently moved from town to a very rural area, and he's been complaining there's nothing to do...so I got him this book and a tool kit. There's a lot of neat stuff to build, and useful survival information. I recommend this for older boys, and "Dangerous Book for Boys" for the younger set.

This is a very good book with a lot of information about outdoor life in days gone by. The snowshoe section contained some excellent information.

Editorial Review:

Long before a "dangerous" book was all the rage there was The American Boy's Handy Book by Daniel Beard, a beloved classic for generations of youngsters. Specially designed to provide loads of ideas for adventures and games both indoors and outdoors during each season of the year, The American Boy's Handy Book was originally published in 1882 and became an instant bestseller.

Now, Tuttle Publishing is bringing this much-loved book back for a new generation of boys to enjoy. If you're not too young to fly a kite or too old to enjoy a day fishing, The American Boy's Handy Book is chock full of fun activities intended just for you! There's something for every day of the year: making an aquarium, rigging and sailing small boats, camping without a tent, making a cornstalk fiddle, trapping, building a snow fort, and of course tons of other games and crafts, too.

Daniel Beard firmly believed in letting boys make their own playthings, encouraging them to value their own hard work and gain the skills needed throughout life to successfully invent, construct and dream. In this world of instant gratification with ever-younger generations coveting the ubiquitous cell phones, computers and iPods, it seems as though the imagination and sense of adventure that permeated our country's past have all but disappeared. Welcome back the joys of childhood with The American Boy's Handy Book, and prepare to make old favorites new again!

Learing how to catch fish as a kid is easier than I thought 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I went fishing once when I was a kid, but I certainly did not know what I was doing. I caught a couple of fish, which we released, but had trouble getting the hooks out without really damaging the fish (yes, I have guilt over this; the reason for killing a fish would be to eat it). My kids have gone a couple of times with Granddad Nelson in the mountains of California and have all enjoyed success, but they were pretty much told where to stand and what to do and the only thing that mattered in the end was that my son was ticked that his younger sister caught the biggest fish (we have the photo to prove it). So we know virtually nothing about the art of fishing. Enter "The Barefoot Fisherman: A Fishing Book for Kids."

Books trying to teach kids how to do things are tricky, especially when it comes to providing the proper balance between breadth and depth. Paul Amdahl covers a lot of ground quickly and proficiently. The tone is authoritative without condescending into juvenile humor as a way of enticing readers. Clearly fishing is serious business, which is why "The Barefoot Fisherman" keeps the focus on what to do and why. If Amdahl is talking about equipment then that means reels, rods, and line; not only defining each but explaining when and why you would use each along with their strengths and weaknesses. There are photographs (B&W) throughout the book to illustrate key concepts and to show the young readers lots of different types of fish. Amdahl covers a bunch of different types of fish, focusing on where to find them and how to catch them (Just plan on getting your hands dirty).

There is also a key philosophy at work throughout "The Barefoot Fisherman." The main thing is that fishing is fun and that while catching fish does have an element of luck to it there are certain things you can do to make it more likely that you will be lucky. What Amdahl offers are not rules (i.e., no guarantees), but rather good, practical advice to help young readers to become young fishermen. At the end of the book he tells his readers to never step on wet rocks, be careful when you are by yourself, and to have fun. By the time neophyte fishermen get to that point they should feel pretty confident about going out and trying to catch some fish. Now, chances are that I am never going to do a whole lot of fishing in the future, mainly because this book does not talk about how to cut through the ice that covers out lakes this time of the year, but someday I might have some grandchildren that could benefit from taking this book down from my shelf. Hey, it could happen.

Simple Beginner book for Campfire Cooking 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A good beginner book to give basic recipes and ideas for cooking on the campfire. The book does what I imagine it set out to do, giving starting point for people doing outdoor cooking with younger children such as parents, scout leaders, or teachers.

Great book for kids and parents! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book gave me a lot of good ideas when I took my daycare kids camping this summer. They liked most of the recipes, but we tailored some of them to their liking. It was a great book.

fun book with neat ideas 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I got this book at the library, but then came now online to purchase it. The ideas presented were fun and easy. I hadn't used tin foil on the campfire before, and the author gave some good ideas for that as well as items to be cooked on a stick. For example, I loved the idea about melting chocolate and bananas in the banana peel wrapped in tin foil. One reviewer commented about the use of perishables in the recipes. That wasn't a concern for us because of the refrigerator in our trailer. I suppose one could put the food items in an ice chest as long as one could drive to his/her campsite.

I highly recommend this book. It's fun and easy food for families while camping.

A "Super Special" Switcheroo 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The "Katie Kazoo" series is about an elementary age girl who received a granting of her wish to be someone else. In each book in this series she experiences (temporarily) a change into someone else, and during the period of change she usually creates a conflict that she has to work to resolve after she turns into Katie again. My daughters (similar in age to Katie) love these books and usually consume them in a single day (or a single sitting). The conflict is low-grade and typically funny or light-hearted.

A Super Special is when she turns into more than one person in the book.

"Camp Rules!" is about Katie turning into a raccoon at summer camp. Then she turns into another girl in a swimming race. The problems along the way include messing up the race and a depletion of snacks (raccoons!). One of our favorites in the series.

Editorial Review:

Katie is so excited for her two-week stay at sleepaway camp! Friends, activities, Color War, s’mores . . . and wild animals???? But Katie can’t go anywhere without the magic wind following her—even to camp! Have twice the summer fun with twice the switcheroos in Katie Kazoo’s newest Super Special!

Editorial Review:

This book is essential for everyone...not just boyscouts or boys even, it is full of practical advice on just about everything...

The original Boy Scout Handbook standardized American scouting and emphasized the virtues and qualifications for scouting, delineating what the American Boy Scouts declared was needed to be a "well-developed, well-informed boy." The book includes information on the organization of scouting, signs and signaling, camping, scouting games, and a description of several scouting honors. Scouts past and present will be fascinated to see how scouting has changed in the ensuing years, and how it has stayed the same.

This is a great book! Dan Beard, one of the principal founders of the BSA, herein illustatrates several easy to build wilderness structures in an easy to read, sometimes humorous style. From lean-to's, shacks, log cabins, even tree houses; there's a wealth of practical information for any outdoorsman within these pages.

I'm very pleased to see this book still available. If you've any interest in the outdoors at all you will not be displeased by an investment in this wonderful book.

Editorial Review:

Very cute, and useful too 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is a really cute and useful book. It has a lot of color illustrations to make it very attractive for a child to read. Also, the concept of cooking over your campfire -- or over several different types of home-made grills that they teach you how to make -- is fun and different. This actually seems to be book two of a series -- the first looks like it's called "Cooking on a Stick, Campfire recipes for kids" by Linda White.

Anyway, the chapters are as follows:

Planning and Packing (make a cooking apron)

Setting up Camp (with a craft for making a banner for your site)

Campires (make a wood carrier out of a sweatshirt, and make some different kinds of fire starters)

Cooking on Outdoor Stoves (make a tin-can grill, canyon sandwiches with English muffins, recipe for asparagus "forests")

Cooking in a (full-sized) garbage can (make a garbage can cooker, make a small "buddy" burner, pizza soup recipe, apple stampede recipe [which is just apple sauce])

Cooking in a paper bag or paper cup (recipe for rise 'n' shine breakfast [bacon and eggs in a bag], chocolate on a stick)

Cooking in Leaves and other foods (bean burgers recipe, bloomin' muffins [muffins you cook in orange peels! how cool!]

Hot rock cooking (sunrise toast and hot rock chicken)

Pit Cooking (fondue and cake)

Solar oven cooking (veggie pie and cookies with granola)

Spit cooking (mushrooms and kebobs)

Dutch oven cooking (stew and cake)

The recipes seem to be well explained and simple enough for kids who are the correct age to actually read the book. (Amazon lists ages 4-8, which from the kid-style illustrations seems right on.) The gimmick of cooking in the woods is fun and safety instructions are included and explained. For example, they explain what makes a good rock to cook on! And they include a long list of supplies and safety equipment, even explaining how to properly -- and safely -- douse a fire. They also cover "what is safe drinking water?" and how to build the perfect campfire.

For those of you who are Family Fun magazine fans, (I appreciate their crafts and clever ideas), for camping fans, and for cooking fans who would like to try something new with their kids, this book is a fun addition to your library.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever made breakfast in a paper bag? Baked a cake underground? Cooked chicken on a hot rock? In this book, you'll learn how to do this and much more. Make your campout, backyard barbecue, or scouting trip something to remember with great food like Jackrabbit Bean Burgers, Marmot Munchies, and Wilderness Chocolate Cake. You'll learn how to cook using everything from an open fire, grill, and Dutch oven to a paper bag, hollowed-out orange, and garbage can! Plus learn how to make a cooking gear corral, pinecone fire starter, cooking apron, solar sill for drinking water, your own family banner, and more! Get ready for some great food and outdoor fun! Cooking in a Can is the perfect activity book for kids who love to camp and cook!
