Editorial Review:

For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Ray's Kid Cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I enjoy cooking. The Kitchen is like my science lab, it is great to taste and try new things in the kitchen.

A cookbook written with children in mind can either talk down to kids or can treat them like equals. most of this book treats children like equals. However it is cutely illustrated with cartoony images of Rachel Ray, which to me, belittles the kids.

The recipes are family oriented cooking tasks that kids and adults can make together. It has plastic slicked stock is the kind I think most cook books can use

This book is good cook book for family and people that want to teach children to eat well. I like what is here..if you have kids and want to have your children to learn to cook, this is your book

Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children? 3 out of 5 stars.

"Cooking Rocks!" was Rachael Ray's first venture into kid-friendly cooking. It's a cut above "Yum-O!" in its simplicity, and it's clearly made for kids. "Cooking Rocks!" translated her half-hour hits into family accessible recipes.

"Cooking Rocks!" is colorful, easy-to-use,and the division of labor between adults&kids is reasoned out. There are recipes clearly aimed at kids-like Fruit "Sushi",Worms&Eyeballs, and Ray's ubiquitous "Pasta,Cheese, and Trees." It's whimsical without being overly cute. There are also meals adults&kids can enjoy alike, such as Tomato,Basil, and Cheese Baked Pasta,as well as Cinnamon-Apple Nachos with Peanut Butter Sauce. On the other hand, as befits a Dunkin' Donuts spokeswoman, the recipes contain a lot of fat and sugar. This is from a woman who started her Yum-O! charity to combat childhood obesity. There are also Ray's usual unholy food combinations. The Chicken Catch-a-tory Ravioli Stew is a sure recipe for constipation. The Hot Dog Pizza with sugared cucumber slices (pickles?) sounds indigestion-inducing. The pizza cheeseburgers are from Ray's "throw it together" philosophy. Yuck-O!

"Cooking Rocks!" is a mixed bag. Not great, not awful as its follow-up. It's mediocre.

Editorial Review:

Kids rock! says Rachael, and it seems the feeling is mutual. Young people number among her biggest fans. For them she has created a fabulous collection of age-specific recipes with a high cool factor.

Too many prepared food ingredients, but ok other than that. 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I gave this kid's cookbook only three stars because the recipes contained within rely too often on packaged/prepared food ingredients (canned soup, crackers, refrigerated dough, etc). I cook real food from whole-food ingredients and want my children to learn this way of cooking as well. The recipes that use whole foods are fine and kid appropriate.

Editorial Review:

All new recipes are age-appropriate, kid-tested and kid-tasted.

Recipes use short ingredient lists and easy step-by-step instructions.

Written and designed to appeal to 8- to 12-year-old children who are just beginning to cook on their own, as well as those who have some cooking experience.

Cooking Basics chapter covers all the things children need to know such as kitchen safety, menu-planning, basic nutrition information, and how to read food labels.

New illustrations and new features make this a must-have reference cookbook for kids and their parents to use together.

Simply delicious recipes kids will have fun preparing and the whole family will enjoy eating.

Yummy recipes include: Farmhouse Breakfast Pizza, Sun-Up Sandwiches, Fast Fixin’ Fajitas, Mighty Melts, Ooey Gooey Fudge Sauce, Raining Berries Turnovers.

Includes recipes for special celebrations and diabetic exchanges.

My son has me read it to him cover to cover! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 3 (and a 1/2) year old son LOVES this book, LOVES IT! He really does sit me down and ask me to read it through as if it were a story book. We also cook out of it. He is always thrilled to make a new recipe. We've made 7 of them, and we've only had the book for 2 months. He can't get enough. Buy this book, really.

Editorial Review:

Pretend Soup has rapidly become the children's cookbook classic, and no home or daycare center should be without a copy. Mollie Katzen, author of the Moosewood Cookbook, and educator Ann Henderson have created a masterpiece formatted for grown-ups--with written instructions, suggestions, and caveats--and for kids--with illustrated, easy-to-follow pictures. The recipes are both tasty and healthy, and the quotes from kids are very funny (Matthew: "This is so good, I can't even say a word.") While safety is stressed and tips and warnings are included, Katzen and Henderson always stress the fun in food preparation. "Spills are what sponges are for. So keep plenty of sponges around, and a good time will be had by all!"

This may be the only cookbook I have read cover to cover... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved reading this book after reading all Ingalls-Wilder's books this summer. The history behind each recipe and the obvious attention to detail make this an excellent book for any Little House fan. I've made about 8 recipes so far with great results.

I was really looking forward to "Fried Apples and Onions" from Farmer Boy and was expecting something different than what the final outcome was (more of a steamed dish than a fried one). The Light Bread and Light Biscuits were raved about as well as Bird's Nest Pudding (a new favorite for us). The fried salt pork with gravy was an unexpected triumph, even if too salty. The corn dodgers were okay, something my family is not accustomed to. The Rye 'n' Injun bread was very different than anything we've ever had-surprisingly sweet and the rye flavor packs a punch. The doughnuts were excellent-something I'll probably be expected to repeat soon. Really looking forward to trying the molasses on snow candy-just waiting for the snow!

I was looking forward to trying my hand at cheese making but found that the instructions were incomplete. Three entire paragraphs for this recipe ended without finishing sentences-maybe an issue I should bring up with the publisher. Otherwise, this review would be a solid 5 stars. (Update on the Hard Cheese recipe that was incomplete-I have gone back and forth with the publisher on this and it comes down to the fact that the 3rd edition of this cookbook-whether hardback or paperback-was edited poorly. They have sent me 2 'replacements', and both had the same problem as the book I received as a gift. They were very nice about it and told me to donate the books to the local library, but I'm still missing a complete recipe. Very disappointing!)

I would agree with others that this is a book to be enjoyed WITH your children and should not be considered a children's cookbook. I enjoyed reading the included excerpts from the Little House books to my family as we ate each recipe and look forward to trying more recipes in the near future. I have a large collection of cookbooks and even cater to small groups occasionally, but this book will be treasured for those times I can enjoy in the kitchen-just for fun.

Lovely book for beginners, highly collectable for foodies. 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is a great little cookbook for little girls. All the ingredients are simple and accessable with results that are not only yummy but appealing to look at. The pleasing result is what will hook a child.

I have seen some critics complain that Beery's cookbook's for children are too simplistic and is taken up by too many pictures. Hello! It's a book for children. The picture is what will inspire them to make it. And they will have fun while they create these nifty little fantasy theme treats.

This book is a marvelous gift, My niece loved hers even though her only prior interest in food was eating it. Highly recomended as a starter cookbook. And frankly it is so cute I plan to get a copy to add to my general cookbook collection.

Very cute book 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my son who is a Redwall fan and he loves it. I thought it might be a little to young for him, he is 13, but he has been reading and looking at it ever since he got it. He has picked out several recipes to try, we haven't had time yet to make any of them but they all look very good. I am glad I purchased this item.

Editorial Review:

From the simple refreshment of Summer Strawberry Fizz to Great Hall Gooseberry Fool, they're all here, along with dozens of other favorites sure to turn young hands into seasoned chefs, illustrated in full color with all the charm and magic that is Redwall.
