Enthusiastically commended 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

"Sweet Treats" focuses on twenty-five delicious, easy, and 'kid favorite' deserts that go from Lemon Bars; Golden Layer Cake; and Chocolate Truffles; to Rocky Road Fudge; Ice Cream Sandwiches; and Watermelon Ice Pops. Both of these simply outstanding and very highly recommended cookbooks for kids are enhanced with a 'Science Corner' that explains the hows and whys of cooking and backing, and a 'Troubleshooting' section which identifies potential problems with ways to avoid or fix them. Enthusiastically commended for family and community library cookbook collections for kid.

Great images for kids and adults 5 out of 5 stars.

We may all live in different places, speak different languages and end up having completely different life experiences, but many of us have a common food. My wife and I love this book as much as our children do. It is very simple, extremely genuine and makes me want to try all the world's bread.

Good, Good, Good 4 out of 5 stars.

This book like the others in the series is great. My 4 yr old & 14month old love both this book. The pictures are vivid, the text is simple...a perfect jump-off for an engaging conversation about the similarities we all share throughout the world.

We all enjoy the book (and the bread)! 4 out of 5 stars.

Our whole family likes this book. My daughter is not yet two but she loves Ann Morris' entire series of books and likes to identify things in each photograph. We look at the photos and talk about different kinds of bread, different ways of eating, and what different things might taste like. The photos are obviously dated but I don't believe that alters the impact of what the author and photographer are trying to do. There is one photo in particular the the adults enjoy sniggering at (I'll let you guess which one!)

We have also started baking the different types of bread in the book together so she can jump right in to the content (what kid doesn't love to have her/his hands in dough?). As she grows, we'll continue to read these books, moving on from identifying simple items to talking about cultures, traditions, environments, geography, and etc. In the final pages of each Ann Morris book there are maps and descriptions of locations/actions for each page that allow readers and children to talk about where places are in relation to one another. I recommend these books for curious children starting at age 18 months and all the way up into the school years.

Editorial Review:

What kind of bread do you eat? A bagel? A tortilla? A baguette? All over the world, wherever there are human beings, someone is eating bread. Ann Morris's simple text and Ken Heyman's dazzling full-color photographs reveal for young readers how people eat -- and how people live -- the world over.

Nice color photos, slim on content 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I thought I would love this cookbook - my toddler and I love to cook together - but it was really disappointing. There are only 18 recipes - and that's including no brainers like "Fruit skewers" and "Homemade lemonade". It's too slim a volume - wish it were twice as big, and with recipes to teach kids how to prepare healthy meals. There are a couple of decent recipes (like chicken dippers and salmon fishcakes) but they are nothing new in our repertoire of kids food - they are also already included in Karmels 'First Meals' which is better than this book. The step by step photos are nice, but doesnt change the fact I wish I hadn't made this a purchase - its a good bet for taking out at the library once and then returning. For step by step kids cookbooks, Mollie Katzen's illustrated books (like Pretend Soup) are great - easier for kids to follow and very healthy (she's part of the veggie Moosewood Collective).

Editorial Review:

From acclaimed author Annabel Karmel, The Toddler Cookbook is the perfect kitchen primer for little chefs. Easy recipes for a wide variety of dishes, from lettuce wraps to crunchy chicken dippers, allow lots of opportunities for toddlers to lend Mom or Dad a hand as they whip up lots of new flavors-and lots of fun.

I like this series for kids. It's a nice way to get kids curious about foods from different cultures, different ethnicities.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the others, but that may just reflect the fact that Jewish cooking isn't as good as other cultural foods. We may be the only ethnic group that doesn't find comfort in our own comfort foods, at least that's my take on it, for numerous reasons, some of which I will respectfully not go into, as they are not flattering to my family.

But still, a nice book, a nice series. If you are fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood with a good variety of ethnic restaurants, and fortunate enough to have children with temperaments conducive to public dining, these books are a nice supplement to the feast.

Editorial Review:

The third book in our World Snacks series will satisfy hungry minds With its introduction to the comfiest of Jewish foods. Pages burst with bagels, knishes, tsimmes, and latkes -- and lots and lots of matzoh. There's even... a scoop of noodle kugel in my fancy-schmancy bowl next to fruit-filled hamentaschen and some nutty rugelach rolls. Filled with tasty mixed media and cut-paper collages, Let's Nosh! will have bubelahs large and small coming back for seconds.

A Review of "Baby Food" 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This might be (as suggested by another reviewer) a cute book for a baby shower but it didn't rate highly with my 3 and 5 year olds.

First it didn't have a story, and second, 3 and 5 year olds are not as attracted by 'cute' pictures as older children and adults. We looked at the book once and then put it in the 'back to the library' stack.

It might be better for older babies and toddlers who could learn something about identifying fruit, but there is plenty of competition that will keep their attention longer.

Two Stars. Cute concept, but it didn't make the cut to become a permanent member of our bookshelves. There are just too many other better choices (ones with a story or educational value) on which to spend our money.

Editorial Review:

A menagerie of animals decorate the gloriously colored pages of BABY FOOD. Animals ingeniously carved and cut from a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables, of course--what else would you expect from the talented Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers, who brought us HOW ARE YOU PEELING?! A Chinese eggplant becomes a little penguin and a red pepper transforms into a baby hippo. A turnip becomes a baby duck and a cauliflower a sheep.Parents, babies, and new moms and pops will love to share these animal babies! They make great winter holiday and Easter gifts for grown-ups too.

A Great Book about Baking Bread & Young Children's Development and Education 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I very highly recommend Bread Baking with Children. It has a great wealth of information on how to and what you need to prepare dough and bake bread, how to do this successfully with children, and why it is beneficial to do so for the children and your home or classroom. It is also very interesting and enjoyable to read and is filled with lovely anecdotes, sketches, and photographs. Any teacher, parent, or caregiver of children could benefit from and enjoy working with this book, even those with a great deal of experience. The writing is very clear, warm, and simple. From recipes, equipment, and ingredients, to mixing, rising, and kneading, to stories, songs, and poems, all is provided for someone to become a true baker and leader of children baking bread. Emphasis is given to the educational and developmental benefits for children's physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth and on ways to incorporate children's bread baking into various school subjects and for different ages. Health related issues concerning bread, wheat, and food in general, such things as sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances, alternatives to wheat, fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides, natural and artificial ingredients, genetically modified food, and factory-baked bread are also discussed and a useful measurement conversion chart is provided. Details are even given for how to build your own earthen oven. After reading Bread Baking with Children, you will know well why some breads are good, and why other breads are not. You will know how to bake bread yourself and how to lead children in the bread baking process. And, you will know how to do both enjoyably and in ways that are healthful for you and your children's body, mind, and soul. Again, I very highly recommend this book for all who help take care of and educate our children and for anyone who would like to learn how to bake bread and why baking your own bread is so much better than buying it at the supermarket.

Editorial Review:

Baking Bread with Children is an invitation to share the magic of baking bread with children of all ages. It includes everything you need to get started--the basics of bread for beginners; a variety of delicious recipes; and a rich store of multicultural stories, songs, and blessings to enliven the whole experience.

Here's a great resource for early-education teachers and parents of young children.

Wonderful first cook book! 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 30 people found this review helpful.

What a great cookbook! Real food for real kids and their real parents. Not only is the layout easy to follow, the book contains good basic info on measuring, cooking techniques, and equipment. It also has invaluable information (in the margins on every page) on safety, nutrition, and other fun facts. The recipes are rated easy to more difficult so that cooks of all levels can enjoy this book. I may even get one for my cooking-phobic sister-in-law!

Yum! 5 out of 5 stars.

The perfect cookbook for kids, kids and parents, and parents alone! Great recipes for all ages. Nutritional tips and info are a wonderful plus for kids learning to cook. Be sure to try the chicken salad recipe.

A coloring book? 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a children's librarian, I bought this book for my library based on reviews and the pictured cover. When I buy my own cookbooks, I look for color photos of the recipe. The pairing of the recipe and final product are truly appetizing and certainly sell, not only the food, but also the cookbook. However, open Kids Cook! and find colorless pages! In fact, it truly looks like a coloring book. At first, I was really annoyed. Children also deserve color photos. Then I reread the reviews and re-examined the cookbook. OK, true, it is a fine little cookbook, easy to read, easy to follow.

With those things in mind, I came up with a way to write a totally positive review. After (you and) the child puts the product in the oven, s/he can sit down and color the recipe page! I suggest keeping nearby a big box of colors--one with bunches of choices in order to get the colors of the food just right. Unless the cook has homework, what better way to use the time while the food cooks?! Pairing a second creative talent with the first! Not only that, but the child can keep up with what has been tried at a glance. On the inside cover, create a chart of good/bad and all between ratings and then mark each colored recipe accordingly! What fun!

Editorial Review:

This book is suitable for ages 9 to 12 years. Whether it's an after-school snack, such as Nacho Nibbles or Jammed Potato Skins, or Sunday brunch for the whole gang, these step-by-step, sure-to-please recipes give kids everywhere a chance to start cooking! This is real food that children - and their families - will enjoy.

A great introduction to international food for young people. 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Cook obviously put a lot of effort into this compilation of recipes and facts. She interviewed children around the world to find out about the things they eat, and pictures of some of these children are shown throughout the book. The book is divided into regions of the world by continent, and the recipes are rated for difficulty with spoons- one spoon is the easiest, and three spoons requires at least moderate adult help and supervision. Many of the foods turn out to be familiar dishes with different names (like Sherpa Popcorn and Ox-Eye Eggs), and there are ideas for theme parties (after-ski breakfast, ice cream buffet, etc.) throughout the book. I originally bought this book for my then-10-year-old sister, who was just beginning to show an interest in cooking, and now that she is 13 she still uses this book. A lot of these recipes are easy and quick enough to be used in a classroom or school cooking club. I bought a copy of this book for myself and think it is truly neat!

Editorial Review:

In this hands-on introduction to foods from around the world, children ages seven to fourteen will learn about other cultures through recipes for more than 75 ethnic dishes. They will also get an introduction to many diverse cultures by learning games, traditions and customs of children from around the world. All recipes include clear step-by-step instructions and no-fuss ingredients found in most grocery stores. The book is fully illustrated and also includes photos of children the author met on her travels while collecting these delicious recipes.

A wisp of a story with recipes 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a perfect beginners cookbook/gift for a child that's a major Mary Poppins fan, otherwise there are many other children's cookbooks that would serve this purpose better. The recipes are decent, a bit too British for most American kids tastes however. That is an issue with the audience and not the book obviously.
For collectors of P.L. Travers writings you will want this, it is but a pale shadow of the series. But any work by Travers is a quirky cause for fun, enjoy it for what it is.

Editorial Review:

Get a unique glimpse at the famous Poppins cast as the spit-spot English nanny and the Banks children take over the kitchen for a week. With the help of familiar visitors like the Bird Woman, Admiral Boom, and Mr. and Mrs. Turvy, Mary Poppins teaches her irrepressible young charges the basics of cooking, from A to Z. And young readers can re-create the week's menus by following the thirty different recipes. Kitchen adventures were never so much fun!

In full color for the first time, this enchanting new edition will delight both old and new fans of the inimitable Mary Poppins.
