Great fun in a cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

These recipes are presented in classic Roald Dahl style. Each recipe takes its name from Dahl's books such as Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight and Spitsizzlers. Quentin Blake, who illustrated many of Dahl's books also lends a hand to this collection so the reader truly relates to the material as if these were the recipes that Dahl spoke of in his books. Also, each recipe starts out with a quote from the book that served as that recipe's namesake. The author is careful to note that several of these recipes require an adult's supervision as they are listed as part of the ingredients in those recipes that use heat. This will be a clever addition to the cookbook collection that may even inspire the reader to look into Dahl's books serving as the inspiration for these recipes.

Editorial Review:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the kitchen-Roald Dahl's recipes are back! Inspired by his most popular stories, these recipes use the most common ingredients to create the most uncommon treats. Not sure how to entertain the kiddies? Surprise them with tummyticklers like Pickled Spines of Porcupines and Hornets Stewed in Tar. There's no better way to liven up a party than to dine on Lizards' Tails and enjoy a delicious Liquid Chocolate Mixed by Waterfall. Like anything by Roald Dahl, it's sure to be extraordinarily funny!

Just what the title implies - a lot of fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is a very appealing cookbook for kids. Right off the bat my children were attracted to it because of the humorous, cartoon-like drawings that are sprinkled throughout. It is very easy to read and the recipes simple to do. Finally, the book is bound within a spiral notebook style so it can lay flat and is easy to handle. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a simple, starter cookbook for their budding chef!

Following a cute section entitled All About Me, come Steps to Good Health and Kitchen Safety. The recipes are separated by categories. They include: Fun with Fruit, Nuts and Bolts, Bread, Grains and Stuff, Vegetable Parade and Vegetarian Delights. It ends with Cloudy Day Fun which gives lots of neat ideas like pudding fingerpaints and making a chef's hat!

Each recipe is only one page long so it is easy to read and nicely spaced. Every page is illustrated with bright colors and humorous characters that depict the recipe. The author has done an exceptional job in laying out the recipe! A new reader could even follow along. First, there is always a cartoon guy carrying a sign saying "Adult Help Needed" if it applys. Then the author outlines each recipe in this clever pattern: READ the recipe, READY-get your cooking tools, SET the ingredients, GO-follow the directions! Finally she gives the cook some cute serving ideas.

This cookbook is just like what it's title implies...a lot of FUN! Any child interested in cooking vegetarian would enjoy using this cookbook. The recipes are easy to read, simple to do and offer a lot of success!

(FYI - The cookbook has religious undertones in its "Steps to A Good Health" Section as well as some advertisements in the back.)-Denise Steele Darnell

Editorial Review:

These scrumptious vegetarian recipes get kids excited about healthful eating. They'll learn to prepare and enjoy nutritious foods such as Vegetable Robots, Animalwiches, and Super Stone Soup. Includes party ideas and rainy-day fun activities.

A lovely story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I found this at our local library and it's one of my 3 year old son's favorite books. I've now bought a copy because he knew it by heart after we returned our library copy. I've read other Gary Paulsen books and have enjoyed them as well, but this simple story with it's beautiful illustrations is one of our family favorites.

HONORING THE CYCLE OF LIFE 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Simply but movingly Gary Paulsen honors the cycle of life. Beginning with the earth, the seeds, and then the plants, he traces the making of flour and then bread.

Thirty-two illustrations in ripe harvest colors add a richness to his story.

Editorial Review:

In clear and eloquent language, Gary Paulsen pays tribute to a cycle of life--from seed to plant to tortilla. Workers till the black soil, operate the clanking machinery of the factory, and drive the trucks that deliver the tortillas back into the hands that will plant the yellow seeds. With Ruth Wright Paulsen’s expressive paintings, The Tortilla Factory brings forth the poetry and beauty of a simple way of life. “This title is beautiful to look at, and will also fit nicely into units on food, regional culture, art, and many other topics.”--School Library Journal

The Pumpkin Book will be a sure hit with teachers doing theme planning around October events. Great book for teachers and parents 5 out of 5 stars.

The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons is an entertaining and informative book for elementary age children. This book is most appropriate for kindergarten through third grade students. The pictures are large and colorful. The text is limited mostly to the bottom of the page. Elementary students will need some vocabulary defined for them - examples: sprout, minerals, stamen, pollen, stigma, nectar, pollination, and harvest. A worthy addition to any parent or teachers' October activities.

Excellent compilation of recipes for the holidays! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

When Bon Appetit and other prestigous publications give this one rave reviews, that's a hint that you might have a "find"...and they are right. From Sabbath to Passover, there are recipes that are delicious, generally very easy to prepare and clearly explained. Although designed for children, I think this one would be excellent for anyone who wants to become an excellent Jewish cook. It is like having a crash course in both the essentials and some special variations.

The book is extremely attractive and there are additions which make it special, such as suggested prayers, historical info about each holiday, great illustrations, etc.

Although the vast majority of the recipes are very simple, when one is a bit more complex, there are often step-by-step illustrations. An example would be Children's Cholent, where every single part of the process is pictured, right up to putting the dish in the oven.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the recipes were unique or new to me.

ANOTHER PLUS: The author suggests which parts of the recipe might be appropriate and easy for a child to handle and which should be done with supervision.

Editorial Review:

Seventy child-friendly recipes and cooking activities from around the world will draw the entire family into the spirit and fun of preparing Jewish holiday celebrations. Covering the ten major holidays, each of the activities has a different focus--such as Eastern Europe, biblical Israel, contemporary America--and together they present a vast array of foods, flavors, and ideas.

The recipes are old and new, traditional and novel--everything from hamantashen to pretzel bagels, chicken soup with matzah balls to matzah pizza, fruit kugel to Persian pomegranate punch.

Cookie Cutters 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought the package strictly for the animal cut-outs. I didn't have any trouble with the smaller body parts....

Editorial Review:

Children love to bake with the adults in their lives their parents, grandparents, and care givers. Here is the perfect early cookbook, as well as 14 animal-shaped cookie cutters and an oven-safe cookie sheet. For simple math, eye-hand coordination, sequencing, and most of all, FUN, what is better than baking? And when the bonus turns out to be eye-pleasing (and stomach pleasing!) cookies, both children and adults win.
