A hit with the kids! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

We all loved "Cooking Art" but especially my children. They loved looking through the illustrations, making the recipes and especially eating their "creations". One of their favorites was the "Zucchini Train". There's just something special about eating something that you yourself have created. Even my finicky eater licked his plate clean! The recipes are easy to do and if you don't have one of the ingredients it's easy to make substitutions. In fact, that's one of the best parts about the book, it gets you thinking how to be creative on your own. The possibilities are endless!

Editorial Review:

From Cantaloupe Canoes to "Me and My Shadow" Toast, children can explore 150 yummy art projects to make and eat. Transform the kitchen into an artist's studio with these easy edible art experiences. Organized by theme, "Cooking Art" combines the familiar area of art exploration with the fascinating world of cooking. Each recipe allows ample room for cooking artists to explore and create in their own special, unique ways.

Excellent recipe book, and an excellent Kirsten book 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This delightful cookbook is part of the American Girls Pastimes series, and focuses on the sort of recipes that would have been used during the time of Kirsten Larson, 1854. The book begins with some historical notes on pioneer kitchens and eating, and includes a short prayer in Swedish (which my eleven-year-old daughter is trying to memorize). Then the book launches into the recipes. First comes breakfast with homemade sausage patties, hard-boiled eggs (and how to serve), Swedish rice porridge, round rye bread (all hand made), homemade butter, and ginger cookies. Next comes dinner with baked ham slice, Swedish potatoes (better than scalloped potatoes!), cabbage and apple salad, fruit soup, and Swedish almond rusks. Then comes favorite foods, which includes potato soup, Swedish meatballs, fresh applesause, Swedish pancakes, St. Lucia buns, and Pepparkakor cookies (ginger cookies, a traditional Christmas treat, but good anytime). The final chapter is on planning a pioneer party.

This is a very good recipe book. The recipes in here are all easily within the ability of a youngster who is guided by an adult with even moderate experience in the kitchen; no special tools are need. My daughter already made the Swedish pancakes (yum!), and is planning a Swedish meal (at which she'll recite the prayer). I can't wait.

This is a very nice book, an excellent recipe book, and an excellent addition to your Kirsten library.

Editorial Review:

Make the same homemade butter, round rye bread, and other foods that Kirsten made in 1854. This cookbook is filled with simple to follow recipes, beautiful photographs, and pioneer party tips.

Ah, *this* is where bread comes from! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A beautiful, deceptively simple, whimsical and instructive book on the growing of wheat and the making of bread. One senses the author's love for his subject, and the photography is breathtaking. One page shows (and tells) how a grain of hard red winter wheat does indeed look like a tiny loaf of bread... this is memorable and magical for children. What I like most is the immediacy and practicality of the text: the baker sows the wheat in his backyard garden, and we're told one acre of grain can keep a family of four in (weekly) bread for ten years. Looks like we're planting some wheat this fall...

Editorial Review:

From a patch of wheatgrass in his backyard, award-winning filmmaker George Levenson takes readers on a tour of bread made from scratch. A thresher, a grinder, and finally a doughy combination of flour, water, yeast, and oil combine to make a freshly baked loaf of whole wheat bread. With energetic, poetic text and vivid photographs, the creative team behind PUMPKIN CIRCLE: THE STORY OF A GARDEN shows children that there's a lot more to this kitchen staple than they might expect.

Smear food on a baby and make a million bucks! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I ordered four Baby Faces books from eBay and was really excited about getting them. However, I'm relisting them immediately due to huge disappointment. My husband couldn't even look at the book the pictures are so disgusting.

This book isn't about babies eating. This book is about babies with smeared food all over their faces which was clearly done intentionally by the photographers. I don't know about you, but I don't really think it's cute when a baby that isn't mine has unknown food smeared all over them. Yuck. It's cute when it's your own baby, but this book is just gross. My son threw every one of them down and wouldn't look at them.

Another thing is the babies are not cute whatsoever. There are a couple, but you figure they would try to actually find pretty babies. Apparently not. It's bad enough I have to see smashed peas in their mouths without adding their lack of appeal on top of it. Sorry, but this book is just THAT GROSS.

Editorial Review:

Babies are mesmerized by other babies -- and the strikingly candid photos in EAT! will keep little ones spellbound. Roberta Grobel Intrater's vibrant photographs capture the many endearing expressions kids make as they're first learning to eat -- everything from the four basic food groups to yummy desserts. Each book contains five spreads and sturdy board pages with rounded corners for safe handling by little ones, and the small convenient size is just right for taking along. Coupled with the simple, rhyming text, this is a perfect mealtime book and an ideal first read-aloud book,

An Imagination Booster 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

The day I recieved this book, I walked right into my daughter's room to read it to her. The fact that it is written with a very serious air made her laugh all the more. (I recommend a British accent.) I explained to her that this recipe book was very special because I always made very similar meals for my dolls as a child and had always felt they were my exclusive ideas. I could see her eyes glowing with the magic of it all and we planned a dolly picnic for the morning. When I went to wake her up the next day, I noticed several little bears sitting around teacups full of some indistinguishable slop. She said, "I took your advice and made them some special tea so they could sleep. I used water, crumpled paper and perfume. And Mama, they LOVED IT!" For parents who want to make their children's childhood as full of fantasy and dreams as possible, this book is a lovely imagination booster.

Editorial Review:

Any doll chef will tell you that no supermarket is as well-stocked as a forest, a sand dune, or your own backyard; and everyone knows that dolls love mud, when properly prepared.

For forty years, Mud Pies and Other Recipes has been the consummate cookbook for dolls, using only the finest ingredients found outside. All of the perennial doll favorites are here, including Dandelion SoufflÈ, Wood Chip Dip, and, of course, Mud Pies.

This special 40th anniversary hardcover edition now includes a Tea Party in the menu section, so that dolls with discriminating palates will be prepared for every social occasion. Erik Blegvad's classically fetching illustrations provide the perfect dressing for Marjorie Winslow's outdoor cookbook for dolls.

Taste Disney at home! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I have often heard that Disney served up some of the best cuisine around. This book proves that it is true. This book has a wide variety of recipes anything from simple to complex, and american to a vast amount of ethnic dishes. Recipes are easy to follow, and turn out well. If you want to bring the taste of Disney home, or impress your family this is the way to go.

A must own for Park lovers! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you are as big a disney park freak as I am, you love to eat your way through them! This fantastic book may be a few years old, but all the recipies are fantastic! Make sure and try the Chichen & Leek Pie from Great Britain in EPCOT!!!

DISH UP SOME DISNEY 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Okay, so "gourmet" may be a bit of a stretch but `Mickey's Gourmet Cookbook" does hold some very, very good recipes, and it's a must for Disneyana collectors and fans of Disney period.

The over 350 recipes include beverages, breads, appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts and sauces. There's a Shogun dinner from EPCOT Center sparked with ginger and mustard sauces.

Chocaholics will relish the Chocolate Amaretto Mousse from the Disneyland Hotel. Apropos from Disney's Caribbean Resort are crunchy Caribbean Sand Bars filled with nuts and chocolate chips.

If your kids are picky eaters - try dishing up some Disney and see what happens.

Average 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I teach fourth and fifth grades, and I bought this book thinking that it would offer fun and different ways to incorporate math into everyday life activities like cooking and eating. I found it to be out of date, average at best and did not really require the use of very much math. It is really more of a children's cookbook than a math activity book. I was disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Just as cookies go with milk and peanut butter goes with jelly, math and cooking go hand in hand. This fun-filled book shows you exactly how.

With more than 60 activities and recipes to try, you can practice math while you cook! Get a handle on measurement, multiplication, division, fractions, percents, geometry, and more, while whipping up mouth-watering treats like scrumptious stromboli slices, chewy marshmallow-fudge squares, yummy chicken nuggets, and delicious butterscotch muffins.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced cook, you too can become a Math Chef. All activities and recipes are kid-tested and require only common ingredients and kitchen utensils. There's also a helpful list of safety rules, an explanation of basic cooking skills, and a complete nutrition guide.

Good but Simple 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

As an experienced cook, I found the recipes in this book to be somewhat simplistic. However, since it was intented for children, I believe that the basic text and detailed instructions included are forgiveable. My family has found several favorites among these recipes, and every dish we've tried has come out well. Most other children's cookery books tend to focus so much on cooking techniques that the actual recipe is forgotten. I found that not to be the case here. Kid's can have fun both making these dishes, and eating the product of their labors. The historical facts about our War for Independance included are also interesting. I would definitely give this book an A+, in the veiw of both teacher and practical cook.

Whipped Syllabub and Raspberry Flummery--Colonial Food Tonight!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Felicity Merriman and her family came from England to settle in the new colonies at the brink of revolution in 1774 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Chronologically both in settlement and the first in the American Girl series of growing up in America, Felicity set the standards for the series.

The Merrimans are wealthy enough to have servants and slaves, therefore Felicity had to learn housewifery, or the managing of a home. She did learn to cook everything so she could see how it was done and thus monitor the cooking done in her own home.

The Merrimans would have had a dairy, usually built two feet into the ground and over a cool spring. Thick walls helped with the cooling. The smokehouse was another essential outbuilding for smoking and curing meats to last all winter.

In addition to specific recipes for breakfast, dinner at mid-afternoon, and favorites for various times, there is a colonial party that students can plan. There are also historical tidbits scattered throughout the book.

The American Girl publisher has entire lines of historical fiction for each girl, craft books, plays, costumes, and the like. The following are the ones for Felicity:

Felicity: An American Girl : Meet Felicity/Felicity Learns a Lesson/Felicity's Surprise/Happy Birthday, Felicity!/Felicity Saves the Day/Changes for or you can buy each separately.

Felicity's Craft Book: A Look at Crafts from the Past With Projects You Can Make Today (The American Girls Collection. American Girls Pastimes)

The American Girls Art Studio: Felicity (American Girls Collection Sidelines)Felicity Fashion Studio (American Girl)

These American Girl series are great for use in studying American history in elementary school for obvious reasons. A great set for elementary libraries. Also great gift ideas for girls 9-12.

Editorial Review:

Beautiful, full-color photographs bring colonial kitchens and cooking to life. Full menus, recipes for Felicity's favorite foods, and plans for proper 18th century parties are included.
