The Best 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

We first checked this book out from the library and loved it so much we bought one. This is great for young chefs and the parents who love them to spend some time together. The directions are easy and they are fun to make. We made the caterpillar for a 6th birthday and it was a big hit. It made the occasion more special.

Anyone can Do 4 out of 5 stars.

The high points of this book are the layout, variety of styles, and the percentage of attractive cakes displayed. Some of these cakes are good for adult beginners as well so don't think of this book as just for kids. Most appreciated were the excellent illustrations.
The book should of had better directions though-and there is one cake at the end of the book that I felt was too difficult for young children to do. There was no information on how to write on a cake. Also the introductory chapter was scant. It would of been much better if more casual text was included on how to get your child interested in decorating a cake and a bit on safety. I didn't like the disclaimer on the inside cover stating that the publishers weren't responsible for kids that hurt themselves using the book-how rude!
Anyway, the book is pretty good overall. The cakes look great and offer many ideas and variations on cake decorating.

Editorial Review:

Cakes -- especially homemade ones -- make any celebration special! This book is filled with 19 easy-to-do cake designs and decorating tips simple enough for kids to try on their own. Decorating with candies, cookies and other goodies means that no fancy pastry bags or labor-intensive parental supervision is required. The illustrated step-by-step instructions, full-color photos and delicious cake and icing recipes in this book in the Kids Can Do It series help kids take cakes from plain to WOW in no time flat! Kids can make a * scary dinosaur * bright butterfly * spooky jack-o'-lantern * cuddly cat * lucky rainbow * terrific tiger

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book in our library and checked it out for ideas of snacks to make for the crowd at my house. My kids saw it, grabbed it and headed to the kitchen to check out what ingredients we had. It's been a big hit here! We checked it out so much I finally had to buy our own copy. It has easy-to-understand directions, color pictures, and cute comments that are right on target for this age group. I'm going to purchase the rest of Dunnington's books for my kids. You can't go wrong with this!

Editorial Review:

What will entice kids into the kitchen and turn them into budding chefs? Try yummy baked apples, to-die-for brownies, crunchy, munchy stove-popped popcorn with peanuts and chocolateÑall found in this lie-flat, spiral-bound cookbook made just for them. Inside, hungry snackers will find foods they can prepare to fill up that after-school empty belly, sate a postgame appetite, and banish movie-watching cravings. And, most important, all these bite-size mini-meals are fun to make, delicious, and (keep it a secret) healthy. A handy basics section includes details on how to read a recipe and teaches kids everything from creating a work space to presentation. Before long, confident youngsters will smoothly prepare such tasty dishes as guacamole, cheese straws, and baked chicken fingers.

Editorial Review:

Grow It, Cook It is the children's cookbook that starts with the seed of a good idea. More than a cookbook, this innovative book offers a fresh approach to healthy eating by getting children involved in food right from the start. Children will learn that when they eat a carrot, they're biting into a root; salads are made up of leaves; and berries are the fruit and seeds of plants, encouraging an early appreciation of food and its origins.

The recipes in the book take the homegrown fruits, vegetables, and herbs and use a variety of cooking methods and store-bought ingredients to transform them into truly homemade meals. All the "crops" can be grown in pots, so young chefs don't even need a large garden to enjoy Grow It, Cook It.

Kitchen Chemistry Fizzes 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When their inimitable school bus goes on the fritz (or should I say, "frizz"?,) the students get worried: this is one field trip they don`t want to miss. They`re trying to give their unique teacher a surprise birthday party and need to get to the bakery for the cake. When they finally reach their destination, the unstable bus suddenly shrinks, with everyone in it, to the size of a moth. They dodge the baker`s fly swatter and Ms Frizzle while using kitchen chemistry to get the job done. My boys and I miss the volume of information and mini "reports" of the original series, but they still learn and have fun at the same time. They have a new respect for cooking, as edible chemistry. And the baking soda experiment at the back of the book is a rainy day standby in our household: we love the fizz from the Frizz!

Editorial Review:

When the class tries to bake a cake for Ms. Frizzle's birthday, they wind up inside it and have some delicious fun learning all about mixtures and reactions that occur when ingredients are combined. TV tie-in.

Typo's Galore! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is entertaining but don't put too much credence in the recipes! For example the Sleeping Beauty pancakes calls for 2 1/2 cups of sugar! Tablespoons would be more like it. Our kids made a big mess creating unedible pancakes.

The recipe for Swamp weed and fly larvae is missing the letter 't' throughout. "2 oma oes", "Sal and pepper", etc.

I am sure that there are more typos like this.

Buyer beware!

Cute pictures, terrible recipes 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My son enjoyed looking at the pictures of the Shrek characters, and it did inspire my kids to want to try to cook, but as a cookbook, it is extremely frustrating and disappointing. As another poster said, the recipes are riddled with errors, such as 2-1/2 CUPS of sugar in pancakes instead of tablespoons, the letter "t" ommitted throughout the salsa recipe, the porridge recipe has the measurements of oats and milk switched, and more. Thank goodness I decided to look over the recipe for pancakes before my daughter made it, and as a experienced cook caught the error. I'm glad it inspired my kids to cook, but it is a pain to have to carefully review and correct every recipe before they can try it. Obviously, the recipes were never tested. I'm sure there are much better kids cookbooks at there with accurate recipes and more kid-friendly.

Editorial Review:

Even the most reluctant young cooks will jump at the chance to make meals and fun snacks with one of their favorite characters-especially because he eats such deliciously disgusting things!

The American Girls Party Book 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

The American Girls Party book offers 18 different theme party plans that accompany the dolls and books made by the same company. "Since the earliest days of America, American girls have found lots of ways to celebrate--picnics, dances, barn raisings, fairs, teas, and victory shows." The authors teach children how to plan ahead for their special theme party.

This book offers wholesome ideas for celebrations; from home-made party invitations (with patterns) to recipes for special easy to prepare dishes, to timeless party games, musical suggestions, and decorating ideas. The book is replete with elegantly laid out color photos of real American girls and the party fixings, celebrating all the joy life offers. I'm sure your little girls will enjoy this book as much as mine do. It teaches children that they have the ability to create something wonderful and share their creation with others. A feel good book!

Editorial Review:

Includes ideas and instructions for party decorations, foods, favors, and games reflecting the worlds of each of the six American Girls: Felicity, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha, and Molly.
