A great gift and our favorite book about food 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My kids and I love Everybody Eats Lunch. We talk about what kids eat on each page and it opens up so many different conversations about other peoples' lives. It's also helped us try new foods as the recipes are easy to follow and there is an appeal to trying something from the book. I find my kids comparing the clocks on the different pages and the children's names. The map with the tabs for locating each child is an added bonus. When we try a new food we talk about how far away that child lives from where we live.

Two nights ago I made the pickles and rice balls with smoked salmon. I even brought the ingredients to the office and made my own version for lunch yesterday. Since then we've been searching for more Japanese foods we can make and I've started to visit a local Asian market. It turns out my kids also love bean cakes.

I've also made several of the Mexican dishes. After not being able to find Dulce de Leche at Whole Foods, I ventured into a Mexican market and found many new foods for my family to try. We also enjoyed the Rusks from South Africa and have added several of the fruits.

Everybody Eats Lunch is the first children's cookbook that has entertained my kids and introduced me to adult foods I want to eat. It's our new favorite gift and I look forward to future books by the author.

Editorial Review:

Everybody Eats Lunch is a cookbook that encourages children to appreciate world culture while reinforcing healthy eating habits in a creative way. Each page features a different country, containing colorful removable images of the food to explore; underneath is a recipe for the dish featured. Younger children can play with the lunchbox-shaped book and foods, while older children learn layers of educational content such as social studies, geography, math, nutrition, languages, and telling time.

Food and Feasts in the Middle Ages 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

These books in The Medieval World series (there are 20), published by Crabtree Publishing Company, serve myriad purposes. For the intended reading age, 9-12, they present medieval life--very confusing to our contemporary conventions--in a perfectly understandable fashion. For that age range, I could not recommend these books higher. If I'd had such materials when I was younger, I might have ended up as a medieval scholar.

Yet they also serve a purpose that the publisher may not have intended, and that is for the casual researcher of medieval life.

There are accessible texts for the casual researcher, this is true, but none that I've seen contain simple explanations and diagrams. For example, this book is full of wonderful illustrations that depict: a timeline that begins with the feudal system and importing rice to Spain from the Middle East in 700 ACE to Christopher Columbus and the introduction of new food around 1493 ACE; what different food shops looked like; taverns and inns; and a two-page diagram (with numbers!) of a noble's feast; and many, many more.

Every page in this book (there are 32 pages in every book in the series), is presented in full color, the pages colored to resemble parchment, and the illustrations done to wonderfully evoke the period.

The "chapters" included are:

The Middle Ages
Ideas About Food
Farming
Peasant's Food
Markets and Fairs
The Spice Trade
Eating in Towns
Food Shops
Cooking in the Castle
A Noble's Table
A Noble's Feast
Hunting, Hawking, and Fishing
Feasts and Fasts
Food in Other Cultures
Glossary and Index (wonderful to have!)

If you're a writer, and you're looking for simple information on what medieval life looked like, this series of books can't be beat. To buy the entire series may be prohibitive, but if you have an idea of exactly what you want, this is a great starting point.

Editorial Review:

This book is suitable for ages 7-14. Feasts were a common way of drawing families and communities together in the Middle Ages. They were also used as an opportunity to display a noble family's wealth. This delightful book takes readers inside a medieval kitchen highlighting utensils used in food preparation, the servants who worked there, and how food was prepared. The topics include: farming and livestock; the harvest and how food was preserved; markets and fairs; herbs and spices to flavour salty foods; food in other cultures of the same period; towns and the merchant class; the butcher, baker, brewer and other tradespeople; the medieval kitchen; hunting, hawking and fishing; the extravagance of the noble's feast; feast days, celebrations, and the Church; and food shortages and famine.

Sweet Eats, Mmmore than just Desserts 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Rose Dunnington has done it again! Let's admit it - we all love dessert, and this book inspires readers to make and share special treats with family and friends. I love the way she encourages the social interaction that we can enjoy around food - it's cool to cook! And like in her other books, the professional but simplistic instructions give the reader the confidence to succeed in the kitchen - a great gift to anyone who eats.

Editorial Review:

When the treat is sweet, children want to cook their own confections. And with this cheerful, beautifully designed kids’ cookbook—the fifth in Lark’s bestselling series—they can. Author Rose Dunnington is back once more, presenting a flavorsome and fun collection of recipes for what is unarguably the most anticipated course of the meal. A handy basics section gets beginners started, but with goodies such as snickerdoodles, chocolate mint cookies, hot cheesecake brownies, strawberry stickies, spumoni, and trifle, eating will be the best part of all. Also included is information on sugar substitutes, less fattening variations, and healthful options. Each recipe features helpful how-tos, and a color photo that will have children grabbing their mixing bowls.

Dissapointed 2 out of 5 stars.

I was so excited about ordering this book. I love Family Fun's monthly magazine and other books published by them but this I could have taken a pass on. The recipes are different but they arent simple and easy. In fact they are creative meals that take some time to prepare and time at the grocer to purchase the items.

A cookbook you can really use! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have never owned a cookbook this great before. Almost everything in it I am interested in and will cook. This is one amazing cookbook, it has simple ingredients, fast cooking times, with great ideas spread throughout the book too.

It might be small, but it is mightly! No need to those other big huge cookbooks anymore. This one is a keeper.

Disappointed to find this is out of print! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!)

Editorial Review:

Now readers can share Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic country cooking in a convenient new paperback edition of this lovely cookbook. Over 70 of Laura's original recipes, updated for modern kitchens, are enriched with anecdotes about the Wilders by noted historian William Anderson and enhanced by Leslie Kelly's full-color photos.

Great Fun! A Wonderful Sharing Experience! 5 out of 5 stars.

In this colorful cookbook, sure to catch the eye of the youngest chief, we are taken into a world of delightful, yummy children's recipes.
My granddaughter and I prepared, cooked and shared "Spectacular Berry Pancakes." Yummy! What a treat.
Strawberry shares great recipes that are fun to make, and fun to eat; from breakfast right through the day. She gives cooking tips, rules of safety and even a few stories are tucked into this wonderful book. A little added plus is a set of measuring spoons to use. Nice touch.

Colorful, useful, kid and parent friendly, this is a wonderful book for young and old.
A fun read, along with a super learning and sharing experience. Recommended.

I remeber this cookbook from when I was a kid. (I am 24) The recipes are very good and easy to follow. I now work as an after school teacher and am always on the lookout for no bake cookbooks but can never find them. If you work with kids and want to do a cooking project but don't have access to a stove, this book can't be beat! The heart tarts are wonderful.

The Good Book and the Cook Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Although not lengthy, this paperback is a terrific resource for families or religious school teachers. The recipes are easy enough for kids to make largely on their own and are very appealing taste-wise. Adding a food dimension to Bible studies makes the lessons more memorable and interactive. I use it regularly with my class and wish I'd had it when my kids were young!

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I am a chef and a Religious Education Director. I get to combine my love for God and my love for cooking and share it with the children!

Meeting God at the Table 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. I purchased it with the intent of using it for inspiration - I'm writing a Vacation Bible School curriculum for my parish. The recipes are wonderful and they are connected to biblical paraphrases. Most of the recipes are easy to prepare and lend themselves to a group activity. The illustrations are delightful also. The book is from a Jewish perspective. Do not expect Christian scripture references. The stories are all from the Hebrew Scriptures. Of course, those are the stories most Christian kids hear in Sunday School! So, bake an apple pie and re-read the stories of Creation in Genesis. It's fun to meet God at the table.
