My little chef 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My six year old loves to cook, and loves to cook "real" food. It is hard to find a kids cook book that isn't all snacks and sandwiches. He loved this cookbook. The step by step pictures make it very easy to understand and the food is something the whole family will love to eat!

Impressive 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book gets kids into real food and teaches them how to use them appropriately and make food attractive and tasty. No silly recipes with ingredients like "one package of pudding mix" etc. Beautifully done with full color photos to clarify all steps and references completely. Despite the fact that the author lives in England, it is published here in the USA. She has included a couple of recipes that definitely seem more British like "Fruit Bread Pudding" but otherwise the recipe selection is very universal.

Editorial Review:

Ever separate an egg with a funnel? Ever make a grilled cheese and broccoli sandwich? Ever follow your kids into the kitchen and help them with recipes they have chosen to prepare?

Mollie Katzen makes all this and more ever so painless. She wrote Pretend Soup for preschool cooks after working with young kids in a preschool setting. Honest Pretzels is the next step. These are more advanced recipes demanding more advanced techniques for children ages 8 and up. It's a kid's cookbook for a more sophisticated palate--those ready for Not-from-a-Box Macaroni and Cheese or Spunky Chili. All the recipes in the book are vegetarian.

Typically, each recipe is introduced with a list of ingredients, the amount of time it's going to take, a list of tools, and a note about where a child might want to ask an adult for help. The actual directions are broken out into separate "cards," many of them illustrated. At no time and in no place is the language patronizing.

Skills your child will develop include making and handling yeasted dough; making filled, shaped, healthy pastries; slicing, mincing, and grating; seasoning with herbs and spices; sautéing, pureeing, measuring, layering, assembling; dividing, estimating, timing, deciding; separating eggs, beating egg whites, folding a puffy batter; making simple, standard sauces; and basic kitchen safety and common sense.

That's quite a list. How did you measure up when you were 8--let alone now? Here's a good chance to give your child a leg up in the kitchen, while staying out of the way. --Schuyler Ingle

Editorial Review:

"Consider, young Jedi: Why bake a plain old cookie when you can bake a super-Chewie Wookiee Cookie?" So begins the delightful Star Wars Cookbook. Aimed at young cooks, but fun for all ages, the cookbook provides recipes for treats such as Princess Leia Danish Dos, Twin Sun Toast, Tusken Raider Taters, Sandtrooper Sandies, and the Amazon.com house favorite, Boba Fett-uccine. (What better way to get young Jedi knights to eat their broccoli?) Author Robin Davis's directions are extremely thorough and safety oriented (as she notes, "the calm and perceptive mind of a Jedi warrior will enable you to prevent most mishaps in the kitchen"), and perfect for kids who are new to cooking. The spiral-bound pages are lightly plasticoated, so if you spill some milk while concocting C-3PO Pancakes, it's easily wiped off. The highlights of the book are Frankie Frankeny's terrific photographs of Star Wars action figures posing with the food--R2-D2 encounters giant frozen R2-D2 Treats that look remarkably similar to him, while Darth Vader raises his fist at Bossk the bounty hunter atop a wall of Bossk Brownies as Darth's henchmen look on. And who could resist a shot of Jabba Jiggle? There's Jabba the Hutt positioned on a pile of oozing lime Jell-O®. Whether you're a Star Wars fan or just looking for a way to get the kids to feel the Force in the kitchen, The Star Wars Cookbook is great fun, and tasty, too! --Rebecca A. Staffel

Children love this story... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am student teaching and used this book in the classroom for a lesson pertaining to the overall theme of Thanksgiving and the Indians. The children were on the edge of their seats through the entire story. I used an activity after the book where students had a piece of paper with a grid on it. In each box, there was a number (1-10) that students had to trace. Then, they glued the popcorn kernels in the grid with the corresponding number. There are so many ideas and activities that can accompany this story! I encourage all teachers to use it...no matter what age level! (I used this in 2nd grade).

Wow ! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was a kid we regularly got this book on our weekly library trips because we loved it at bedtime so much! The historical notes were great, and I was particularly fond of the illustrations.

I'm so glad to find that it's still in print. I'm going to add it to my wish list right now!

The Popcorn Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked the book. The author was very creative with his illistrations. The reason I chose this book was because my favorite food is popcorn! Tomie de Paola must of had to do alot of research for this book. I would recommend The Popcorn Book to any lower-grade teacher.

Too many desserts 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This was a nice cookbook, but it has too much of a focus on desserts and not enough focus on cooking healthy foods a child will enjoy.

Somewhat disappointing fixation on sweets 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I saw Jennifer Low in a TV appearance promoting this book, where she spoke at length about the need for kids to eat nutritious food and limit their consumption of treats. She emphasized the kids eat too many treats, and by definition a treat should not be eaten non-stop. Inspired by her enthusiasm for healthy kids, I purchased this book, only to find a few main dishes or savory breads followed by over 80 (out of 100) recipes for sweets.

The recipes have moderate yields -- limiting the disappointment if they don't come out right, and controlling the amount of raw ingredients that would be put into the recipe (as she says, your kids won't use up all your eggs), but there are simply too many sweets. And many of these are serious sweets, like fudge, not fruit salad. Three of them, incidentally, call for raw eggs.

Low was mindful of creating recipes that are do-able for young children, and she keeps their limitations and the comfort level of their parents in mind. All of the recipes use the oven, not the stove. A book like Mollie Katzen's "Pretend Soup" includes a visual recipe chart for preschoolers who cannot yet read as well as a wholesome attention to things like quick sandwiches and sauces), without all the sugar.

The recipes are very tasty, and the yield sizes appropriate. I just wish she would have diversified her offerings.

Editorial Review:

Kids love to cook and help in the kitchen. This book has 100 no-knives, no-flame, from-scratch recipes that kids can easily make with the help of a caring adult. Each recipe has been tested by kids aged four and up and each dish is beautifully photographed. The book also shows how to organize a safe and fun kitchen for kids to learn cooking and to create yummy dishes.

Tea Party 3 out of 5 stars.

A good book, but not as well done as some of the others.

Great book for the 8-10 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.

I used to own a Tea Room and this was one of the books I sold in the gift shop. There are so many wonderful themes to choose from and "how tos" so you achieve that theme. Once you get started you'll start adding your own personal touches ... we couldn't keep this book on the shelves.

Having a Tea Party is a wonderful thing for little girls - we hosted many birthday and holiday parties for young girls in the 6-12 year old age range and this was a popular book!

Editorial Review:

Emilie Barnes invites her little friends to enjoy the wonder of teatime. Whimsical images by artist Michal Sparks dance around the many creative ideas for invitations, decorations, tasty treats, and frolicking fun activities for six parties, including Elizabeth’s Pony Club Tea, A Musical Tea, and Tea with Grammy.

very cute book 4 out of 5 stars.

we love the sing-song metric to the rhyme in this book. It's not my baby's favorite book, though. She actually prefers "my first sushi book" to this one. Still, we're learning about important foods that we eat in our half-mexican household.

Made Me, My Mom, And My Toddler Laugh 5 out of 5 stars.

We live in Texas so we see and eat a lot of this food. I really like the pronunciation key on the back. It really made me giggle (especially the first line, Hola! Jalapeno. I said Hello! my chile friend). The pictures are bright and festive, my son enjoyed that. I give it to him to look at when I change his diaper and he has a good old time.

From burritos to quesadillas to molé, lively mixed media and cut-paper collages take readers on a tour of their favorite foods of Mexico. Sure to satisfy faster than you can say “More, por favor!”

Better than the First! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Just added this nifty little themed children's cookbook to my collection. I have all of Ms. Beery's books in this series and have given them as gifts with great success. The format is rather successfully designed to interest children in cooking.

All three of the books rely rather heavily on recipes for snacks and deserts. Things that kids are normally attracted to. However the "Mermaid Cookbook", third in the series includes more meal items such as salads and sandwiches and a greater use of fruit. Which gravitates more towards an awareness (albeit an unconcious one for many children.) of better eating habits.

Don't be mistaken or put off that these recipes aren't vegan or part of the trend of tricking kids into eating mystery veggies. Beery is catering towards flavor, so butter and sugar are used in her recipes. However she does suggest the replacement of honey for those moms out there who want to keep a handle on their childrens diets.

Another improvement from the Pink Princess Cookbook (still 5 stars by the way!) is that in both this and the Fairies Cookbook she includes metric and oven conversion charts.

This Cookbook is a Hit for children and adults.

Editorial Review:

Dive into this new cookbok by bestselling children's book author Barbara Beery! Mermaid Cookbook offers themed recipes perfect for mermaid, ocean voyage, treasure island, and pirate parties for kids. Very cute book 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my son who is a Redwall fan and he loves it. I thought it might be a little to young for him, he is 13, but he has been reading and looking at it ever since he got it. He has picked out several recipes to try, we haven't had time yet to make any of them but they all look very good. I am glad I purchased this item.

My son *loves* this book, as well as AWS's other books in the World Snacks series. You should have seen him labeling the siu mai and other dim sum on the carts at our local restaurant! So fun, educational and beautifully illustrated too.

A brilliant way to introduce our baby to cultural diversity... through food!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband and I are both foodies. We love ethnic cuisines quite a bit. So, we are so happy that our little boy, who's almost a-year-and-half, already loves items like pasta, onigiri, dim sum, fried rice, taco, quesadilla, etc.

I was so excited when I discovered this book series one day. I thought it would be a great addition to his little library, as well as being a great supplement to our effort to introduce him to all the various yummy food different people throughout the world eat. I began with "Yum Yum Dim Sum." It provides lots of fun, helps him associate these yummy dishes with exciting pictures. I cannot wait to get more.

Highly recommended!!!
