Another great cookbook from WS 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I got this for my 6 year old who loves to cook. His favorite "cookbook" is the WS Baking book so I figured this one would be an easy transition to a wider array of foods. This cookbook, like the Baking book, is easily read by my son and makes really delicious foodstuffs. The proportions aren't huge and the end product is flavorful. I especially appreciate the culinary education that WS tries to impart to the kids as they cook and bake. The only negative comment I have to make is regarding the Ultimate Ham and Cheese Sandwich recipe--the Gruyere cheese is not a favorite among kids (cheddar can be used in its place). Bottomline: This book successfully encourages kids to get involved in the actual cooking of their food as well as enjoying the end product...without having to make food look like cutesy animals or insects, like so many ridiculous kids "cookbooks" do.

Stunning, moving, richly detailed 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book a few summers ago, and I couldn't put it down. O'Neill's exhaustive research--including many personal interviews--helps solidify this book's place in the pantheon of great historical non-fiction of the 20th century. "The Firecracker Boys" picks up after World War II when the United States government, eager to find peaceful uses for nuclear power, proposed building a harbor near the remote Alaskan village of Point Hope using megaton nuclear explosions in a plan called "Project Chariot." The ambitious plan, which supporters felt could redeem nuclear weapons before the very eyes of a generation who saw its horrific power demonstrated on Japan, met fierce resistance among biologists, anthropologists, and most importantly local Alaska Native villagers of the region. These opponents feared radiation, debris fallout, and that the government continued to deny or downplay dangers of Project Chariot. O'Neill charts, in beautiful detail, the high-minded idealism of Project Chariot supporters against the burgeoning grassroots resistance which demanded fair recognition of Project Chariot's irreversible damage.

While Project Chariot first arrived, and met its doom, in a remote quarter of the globe, this story is firmly fixed on the world stage. This is not the anecdotal story of a failed gimmick; rather, this is the genesis of the movement towards limiting nuclear power, recognizing environmental impact, and treating Alaska Natives as more than haphazard bystanders to industrial progress. People, personalities, subplots, and larger impacts for the whole of humanity enliven this story and give Project Chariot a rich context. I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

good recipes, but not a kids' cookbook per se 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for some fun recipes that a kid will enjoy eating, this cookbook is fine. If you're looking for recipes your kid can prepare (or help substantially with), I'd skip this book.

This is a perfectly fine cookbook with nice pictures and recipes for things that kids will probably eat, but I don't think it's well-suited for helping a child learn how to cook. My daughter received this for her fourth birthday, along with an apron and some miniature bakeware & utensils. She loves to piddle in the kitchen, but she really couldn't contribute any more than the usual (stirring, adding ingreadients I had prepared & measured) on the recipes we made from this book. We've made spaghetti pie and asian meatballs-- both were delicious, but they pretty much required adult preparation. Kids of an age to enjoy Elmo can't cook & drain pasta or mince water chestnuts.

The book is good for children to look at -- the photographs of foods are large and simple -- and the things we've made are tasty. I would not recommend this if your primary goal is to have recipes a child can prepare. Elmo and Sesame Street appeal to the pre-school crowd but the pre-school crowd isn't quite ready to cook much-- by the time a child is capable of mastering the recipes in this book, they may well have outgrown Elmo.

Children love this story... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am student teaching and used this book in the classroom for a lesson pertaining to the overall theme of Thanksgiving and the Indians. The children were on the edge of their seats through the entire story. I used an activity after the book where students had a piece of paper with a grid on it. In each box, there was a number (1-10) that students had to trace. Then, they glued the popcorn kernels in the grid with the corresponding number. There are so many ideas and activities that can accompany this story! I encourage all teachers to use it...no matter what age level! (I used this in 2nd grade).

Wow ! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was a kid we regularly got this book on our weekly library trips because we loved it at bedtime so much! The historical notes were great, and I was particularly fond of the illustrations.

I'm so glad to find that it's still in print. I'm going to add it to my wish list right now!

The Popcorn Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked the book. The author was very creative with his illistrations. The reason I chose this book was because my favorite food is popcorn! Tomie de Paola must of had to do alot of research for this book. I would recommend The Popcorn Book to any lower-grade teacher.

A brilliant way to introduce our baby to cultural diversity... through food!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I are both foodies. We love ethnic cuisines quite a bit. So, we are so happy that our little boy, who's almost a-year-and-half, already loves items like pasta, onigiri, dim sum, fried rice, taco, quesadilla, etc.

I was so excited when I discovered this book series one day. I thought it would be a great addition to his little library, as well as being a great supplement to our effort to introduce him to all the various yummy food different people throughout the world eat. I began with "Yum Yum Dim Sum." It provides lots of fun, helps him associate these yummy dishes with exciting pictures. I cannot wait to get more.

Highly recommended!!!

Great way to learn about foods 5 out of 5 stars.

We have a series of these books for my son. We read them to him and he loves the pictures. It's a great way for him to be introduced to different kinds of food.

Cute book about Chinese food 5 out of 5 stars.

I would have preferred photographs of the foods rather than multimedia collages, but the writing is very cute.

Not as good as the sushi book. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my one year-old son, because he loves the sushi book in this series. Neither my son nor I enjoyed this one as much. I expected the book to be more interesting. The pictures are nice and it it does provide an easy way to introduce dim sum to a young child. Ultiimately though, after reading it to my child, I decided not to buy any additional ones in the series.
