The meter is sometimes a challenge in this book, but it's still lots of fun.

All of of these little board books by Amy singer are great. Perfect for the toddler who loves to turn the pages and learn about something a little different than, ball, duck, and dog!

Editorial Review:

In her sixth book in the World Snacks series, Wilson Sanger pays tribute to dishes from the Italian table. From hearty minestrone and risotto stirred and stirred with heart to sweet, cool gelato, Mangia! Mangia! Introduces young tummies to tasty treats from the land of linguini. Rhyming text and colorful collage art show that there’s much more to Italian food than spaghetti! The back cover features a glossary of Italian terms used in the book.

we love the sing-song metric to the rhyme in this book. It's not my baby's favorite book, though. She actually prefers "my first sushi book" to this one. Still, we're learning about important foods that we eat in our half-mexican household.

We live in Texas so we see and eat a lot of this food. I really like the pronunciation key on the back. It really made me giggle (especially the first line, Hola! Jalapeno. I said Hello! my chile friend). The pictures are bright and festive, my son enjoyed that. I give it to him to look at when I change his diaper and he has a good old time.

This book is worth its weight in salt! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Salt. Who would have thought something so simple, so seemingly common (to Americans) could control the world? Can it? Does it? Mark Kurlansky and S.D. Schindler reveal the significant and necessary role of salt in man's history in The Story of Salt, a condensed version of Salt: A World History, Kurlansky's best-seller for adults.

Speaking of canning, the duo show the discovery of canning with airtight, heated jars (p. 38). Just as with the discovery of salt as a preservative, then the next step in salt's progress was canning and frozen foods.

But back to the beginning. That is what the book does: It shows textually and pictorially how seeking sources of salt became essential to the growth of civilizations. As wanderers, men could eat the flesh of animals and get a necessary amount of salt. However, once people formed settlements, they had to go out to find salt sources. In nearly all cases, by-products were discovered: natural gas, secondary foods (cheese, sauerkraut, bacon), international trade, soy sauce, mummies, transporting without spoilage, salt fish, exploration, trade organizations, meatpacking, roads, new industries, independence, and oil drilling. This is a significant list. Each item is featured, illustrated, explained in a delightful manner from one block to a two-page spread of artwork and text.

For example, in Hallein, a Celtic settlement whose name means "saltwork," Celts used salt to preserve the thigh of hog to create ham. A block on the next page (23) shows a preserved Celt (known by their colorful clothing), who had been trapped in a collapsed salt mine around 400 B.C.

Other examples are the trade organizations formed by seacoast countries with cod fishing and inland countries with salt mines, e.g. the English and the Portuguese, the Germans and Italians. Prior to the War for Independence, the colonists traded their Virginia hams for Liverpool's salt. The war forced colonists to find their own salt source, which they did to became independent in more ways than one.

A highly informative text loaded with illustrations, this book could well serve teachers and librarians in web research projects: salt in the middle with all the peripheral products and events spoking outward, with each one assigned to a team or group to research further, then create a powerpoint or other software presentation. Think of the multiple intelligences generated, much as salt generates other things. And certainly not common!

A highly fascinating and recommended book!

Editorial Review:

From the team that created the ALA Notable Book The Cod’s Tale comes the fascinating history of salt, which has been the object of wars and revolutions and is vital for life.

Based on Mark Kurlansky’s critically acclaimed bestseller Salt: A World History, this handsome picture book explores every aspect of salt: The many ways it’s gathered from the earth and sea; how ancient emperors in China, Egypt, and Rome used it to keep their subjects happy; Why salt was key to the Age of Exploration; what salt meant to the American Revolution; And even how the search for salt eventually led to oil. Along the way, you’ll meet a Celtic miner frozen in salt, learn how to make ketchup, and even experience salt’s finest hour: Gandhi’s famous Salt March.

My little chef 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My six year old loves to cook, and loves to cook "real" food. It is hard to find a kids cook book that isn't all snacks and sandwiches. He loved this cookbook. The step by step pictures make it very easy to understand and the food is something the whole family will love to eat!

Impressive 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book gets kids into real food and teaches them how to use them appropriately and make food attractive and tasty. No silly recipes with ingredients like "one package of pudding mix" etc. Beautifully done with full color photos to clarify all steps and references completely. Despite the fact that the author lives in England, it is published here in the USA. She has included a couple of recipes that definitely seem more British like "Fruit Bread Pudding" but otherwise the recipe selection is very universal.

Kids' Fun and Healthy Cookbook By DK Publishing"Put the fun back into healthy eating with this bright and colorful cookbook. This lively collection encourages kids to consider what they eat and how it affects their bodies, without preaching. Yummy interpr

HONORING THE CYCLE OF LIFE 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Simply but movingly Gary Paulsen honors the cycle of life. Beginning with the earth, the seeds, and then the plants, he traces the making of flour and then bread.

Thirty-two illustrations in ripe harvest colors add a richness to his story.

A lovely story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I found this at our local library and it's one of my 3 year old son's favorite books. I've now bought a copy because he knew it by heart after we returned our library copy. I've read other Gary Paulsen books and have enjoyed them as well, but this simple story with it's beautiful illustrations is one of our family favorites.

Editorial Review:

In clear and eloquent language, Gary Paulsen pays tribute to a cycle of life--from seed to plant to tortilla. Workers till the black soil, operate the clanking machinery of the factory, and drive the trucks that deliver the tortillas back into the hands that will plant the yellow seeds. With Ruth Wright Paulsen’s expressive paintings, The Tortilla Factory brings forth the poetry and beauty of a simple way of life. “This title is beautiful to look at, and will also fit nicely into units on food, regional culture, art, and many other topics.”--School Library Journal

Uh-Oh Oatmeal Raisinette 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful cookbook and my daughter loves it. However, when I let my two kids bake alone for the first time they made a bad choice. The Oatmeal Raisinette Cookies recipe calls for 2 and 1/2 sticks of butter and only 1 egg, 1 and 1/2 cups of flour, and 3/4 cup of oatmeal. My kids were obviously not experienced enough to realize that the amount of butter is way out of proportion, so their "cookies" melted all over the oven. Needless to say, I'm disappointed that the book wasn't more carefully edited. I won't let them use this book again unless I examine the recipe carefully first myself.

Fantastic Book 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is making everything she likes from the book. The zesty chicken and chocolate cake recipes are great. So are the sugar cookies. Very easy to understand recipes. Great first cookbook.

Loving it 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book! Forget the kids...I'm 40+ years old and this is the 'starter cookbook' I've always wanted! The recipes are easy to follow and the results are delicious. The kids have helped with some of the recipes but more often it winds up just me and the cookbook but I love the simplicity. My mom has one of the other books (short on time) and those recipes are a bit too advanced for my very limited skillset.

making tsimes 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 41 people found this review helpful.

I like this series for kids. It's a nice way to get kids curious about foods from different cultures, different ethnicities.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the others, but that may just reflect the fact that Jewish cooking isn't as good as other cultural foods. We may be the only ethnic group that doesn't find comfort in our own comfort foods, at least that's my take on it, for numerous reasons, some of which I will respectfully not go into, as they are not flattering to my family.

But still, a nice book, a nice series. If you are fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood with a good variety of ethnic restaurants, and fortunate enough to have children with temperaments conducive to public dining, these books are a nice supplement to the feast.

Full-color, 20 pages, 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, Ages 1 to 3

The third book in our World Snacks series will satisfy hungry minds with its introduction to the comfiest of Jewish foods. Pages burst with bagels, knishes, tsimmes, and latkes—and lots and lots of matzoh. There’s even… a scoop of noodle kugel in my fancy-schmancy bowl next to fruit-filled hamentaschen and some nutty rugelach rolls.

Filled with tasty mixed media and cut-paper collages, Let’s Nosh! will have bubelahs large and small coming back for seconds.

Editorial Review:

You're young, you're hungry, you're clueless

The kitchen looms before you like something from a bad horror film. There's food in there, but then what? It'll have to be cooked... or at least peeled. Probably both. It's enough to scare even the foolhardy, but then so is a diet of macaroni and cheese. And you can't afford to keep ordering pizza. Aaarghh!

Relax! You're not alone. Author Evelyn Raab (mom to two teenage sons) understands that the kitchen is alien territory, and she is going to teach you everything you need to know to produce something deliciously edible out of actual ingredients -- in other words, cook -- and live to tell the tale.

Incredibly thorough, never condescending, and with a dash of humor, Clueless in the Kitchen leads culinary neophytes through the entire range of kitchen experience -- from cleaning a stove and outfitting a first kitchen (cheaply), to unplugging a drain and identifying that stuff in the bulk-food bins. Two hundred easy-to-follow recipes show how to make all kinds of simple and scrumptious dishes for every meal and occasion, beginning with "Breakfast: A Cruel Joke" and ending with Snacks and Munchies." There's even a chapter devoted exclusively to the "Vehemently Vegetarian."

And there's more! Each recipe is coded with an icon symbolizing vegetarian meals, cheap eats, couch potato, mom, or family food, food to impress, and snacks and munchies. And useful menu planners will help you tailor the perfect meal to every guest, whether that guest is your shallow but fun boy/girlfriend, your aunt Gladys, or (gasp!) your entire family.

Whether you're living on your own for the very first time or you're just on your own for dinner, Clueless in the Kitchen will be the first and -- hopefully -- only guide you will ever need. You may never eat macaroni and cheese again!

A book packed with curriculum ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book has been around for a long time, but it continues to be a favorite in my classroom. It's one of those simple books that sparks so many different curriculum paths! Counting, number groupings, nutrition, cooperation, family activities, word choices, story writing, and more. It has also initiated collage art projects, quilt making, and paper mache vegetables! FEAST FOR 10 is a goldmine. I see that it's coming out in a board book soon, too. We have both the hardcover and several paperbacks in my class.

Feast For 10 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A sweet 1-10 counting book that has a nice rhyme scheme and builds its story by counting to ten, not once, but twice. The art designs feature a black extended family, however, this is not central to the story. What is emphasized is the feeling of family warmth and cooperation throughout as everyone pitches in to create the feast for ten. Children can also count the items in each picture that correspond to the poem. Well done.

Editorial Review:

A counting book that features an African-American family shopping for food, preparing dinner, and sitting down to eat. Lively read-aloud text.
