This is a Christmas gift for my granddaughter, so I can't really evaluaate the book. I can let you know after the holiday.

DK Children's Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

My five-year-old picky eaters have declared this their favorite book. They love to cook now, because they can pick their ingredients, or just point to the beautiful photos and say, "Let's cook that!"

I have to admit I've started using this book for my own cooking, since it is quite diverse, and, well, simple to use.

Happy cooking!!!

Beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Ever separate an egg with a funnel? Ever make a grilled cheese and broccoli sandwich? Ever follow your kids into the kitchen and help them with recipes they have chosen to prepare?

Mollie Katzen makes all this and more ever so painless. She wrote Pretend Soup for preschool cooks after working with young kids in a preschool setting. Honest Pretzels is the next step. These are more advanced recipes demanding more advanced techniques for children ages 8 and up. It's a kid's cookbook for a more sophisticated palate--those ready for Not-from-a-Box Macaroni and Cheese or Spunky Chili. All the recipes in the book are vegetarian.

Typically, each recipe is introduced with a list of ingredients, the amount of time it's going to take, a list of tools, and a note about where a child might want to ask an adult for help. The actual directions are broken out into separate "cards," many of them illustrated. At no time and in no place is the language patronizing.

Skills your child will develop include making and handling yeasted dough; making filled, shaped, healthy pastries; slicing, mincing, and grating; seasoning with herbs and spices; sautéing, pureeing, measuring, layering, assembling; dividing, estimating, timing, deciding; separating eggs, beating egg whites, folding a puffy batter; making simple, standard sauces; and basic kitchen safety and common sense.

That's quite a list. How did you measure up when you were 8--let alone now? Here's a good chance to give your child a leg up in the kitchen, while staying out of the way. --Schuyler Ingle

Editorial Review:

Somewhere between banging the table with a spoon and refusing to eat Brussels sprouts, children are captivated by the magic that takes place in the kitchen. Transforming a lump of dough into a chocolate chip cookie, watching a pancake puff up on the griddle, rolling meatballs between their hands are all enchanting to children. "Look and Cook features 50 simple recipes for kids of all ages that capture the fun of cooking. The kid-tested recipes are clearly explained and colorfully illustrated with vintage cookbook artwork. Author and designer Tina Davis has been collecting cookbooks for more than two decades. Some of the recipes she includes here, such as Popcorn Balls, are reproduced from her favorite books. Others such as Fruit Salad and Meringue Cookies come from her family's collection and have been passed down for generations. From Salmon Loaf to Blueberry Muffins, all of the dishes are classic favorites easy enough for a child to make with a little supervision from an adult. To acquaint kids with the kitchen, Davis describes different utensils and their uses, then explains some rudimentary techniques, like how to measure ingredients and clean up afterward. Junior cooks can personalize the book by adding their own recipes to the blank Notes section.

Chef Jorge’s Guacamole

“Our friend, Chef Jorge uses a molcajete—the bowl-like thing called a mortar in English—and a tejolote—the round-bottomed rock used for grinding known in English as a pestle. They are both made of volcanic rock but you can use a bowl and wooden spoon instead.”
—Belle

Makes 1-1/2 cups guacamole

You’ll need:

1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
2 tablespoons finely chopped white onion
1 tablespoon finely chopped jalapeño chile pepper
1 large ripe avocado (the Haas variety is the best)
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice
Dash of salt
1 tablespoon chopped ripe tomato
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Tortillas or corn chips for serving

Equipment:

Measuring cups and spoons
Medium bowl (about 3 quarts)
Large wooden spoon for stirring
Butter knife

1. Put the garlic, onion, and jalapeño in the bowl and use the wooden spoon to stir them together.
2. Have an adult help cut the avocado vertically in half, from the narrow end to the wide end; remove the large seed or pit.
3. Hold one avocado half in your hand and use the butter knife to cut through the flesh of the avocado into long strips, making sure not to cut through the skin. Cut the avocado flesh in the other direction to make cubes. Turn the avocado inside out, then drop the cubes into the bowl with the garlic-onion mixture. Repeat with the other avocado half.
4. Add the lime juice to the bowl. Mash the avocado with the wooden spoon until it’s creamy but still a little lumpy. Add the salt, chopped tomato, and cilantro and mix to combine.
5. Serve the guacamole with tortilla or corn chips, or use it in tacos.

Tuscan Bean Dip

“Papa makes this for every party and everyone loves it. We use the leftovers on Italian panini (sandwiches) instead of mayo. This recipe definitely keeps the vampires away, if you know what I mean.”
—Belle

Makes 2 cups of dip

You’ll need:

1 can (15.5 ounces) cannellini beans
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 garlic cloves, peeled
Veggies, chips, and crackers for serving

Equipment:

Measuring cup
Can opener
Food processor
Rubber spatula
Serving bowl

1. Open the can of beans with the can opener.
2. Pour the beans into the bowl of the food processor, then add the olive oil and garlic. Process until the mixture is smooth.
3. Have an adult remove the blade in the food processor. Now, use the rubber spatula to scrape the mixture into the serving bowl. Serve with your favorite veggies, chips, or crackers. Yum!

My daughter loves the Mix-It-Up Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My 11-year-old daughter received this cookbook as a birthday present and has been on a cooking tear ever since. The book is nicely organized, colorful and easy to read for kids. The recipes are perfectly suited to the younger set, too.

She's already made the spaghetti and meatballs, as well as the pancakes. As her mom, I'm very happy that she's enjoying herself and that I'm off the hook when she's cooking!

I'm actually ordering the book as a Christmas present for another 11-year-old -- I highly recommend this cookbook to preteen or younger children.

Little Chefs Love This Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is ten years old and loves this hardbound cookbook. I was going to give this to her for Christmas 2005, but decided I couldn't wait to help her bake cupcakes before then. Easy to understand directions for a ten year old makes this book a plus!!!

A Teen's Review 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very fun and colorful kid's cook book. Considering it's American Girl I would reccomend it for girls. This cook book separates the recipes into various sections including: eggs, pancakes, quick breads, pizza, tortillas, noodles, chocolate, popcorn, icec cream, and mix a meal. Each category has about 2-5 recipes. Along with many recipes they give you some "mix ins" or other ideas for the recipe. For example, one of my commonly used pages is boiled eggs. They tell you specifically how to boil eggs and then on that page they have the recipe for deviled eggs, egg salad, and egg sanwiches. Another page is "old fashioned popcorn". They first tell you how to stove top cook the popcorn and then they have on the page beside it, all different ideas for flavoring your popcorn. (cheese please, peanut butter cup, or candy mix ins). It's a fun book. I think more of the recipes are more snacks and small meals rather than a large meal. I also like this book because they give you lots of tips for cutting and measurin and all that. They include a couple charts for yourself in the front as well. It's a good party book! Ages: A girl of 6 could probably enjoy the colors and pictures in the book and help a parent make the recipe. Anyone over 17 would probably prefer a book with more advanced recipes.

Uh-Oh Oatmeal Raisinette 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful cookbook and my daughter loves it. However, when I let my two kids bake alone for the first time they made a bad choice. The Oatmeal Raisinette Cookies recipe calls for 2 and 1/2 sticks of butter and only 1 egg, 1 and 1/2 cups of flour, and 3/4 cup of oatmeal. My kids were obviously not experienced enough to realize that the amount of butter is way out of proportion, so their "cookies" melted all over the oven. Needless to say, I'm disappointed that the book wasn't more carefully edited. I won't let them use this book again unless I examine the recipe carefully first myself.

Loving it 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! Forget the kids...I'm 40+ years old and this is the 'starter cookbook' I've always wanted! The recipes are easy to follow and the results are delicious. The kids have helped with some of the recipes but more often it winds up just me and the cookbook but I love the simplicity. My mom has one of the other books (short on time) and those recipes are a bit too advanced for my very limited skillset.

Editorial Review:

Simple enough to give a child confidence and interesting enough to engage the parental chef, these kid-friendly recipes and helpful tips introduce the techniques known by every good kosher cook. Each recipe comes with an equipment list, an ingredient list, and a photo of every scrumptious dish.

These are not the healthiest snacks in the world, but they ARE better than fast food and most of the prepackaged junky snacks. And, my daughter likes to follow the recipes from the book. The book is helping her learn to cook, and that makes me happy.

Some issues with some of the Spanish Words 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As a native Spanish speaker, it is very important for me that my son learn Spanish. My son loves all of the books in this series, but this one causes me a few problems. Part of the problem is the Spanish words used (which is an issue for my dialect). For example, "bananas" is translated as "las bananas" instead of "los platanos" and peas are translated as "las guisantes" instead of "los chicharros" and "broccolli" is "el brecol" instead of "el broculi" (sorry my keyboard is not set to do accents). The other issue is some of the foods selected. For example, "soup" is one of the foods, but it is hard to draw in a way that children really understand that is is soup. "Radish" is anothert choice, but since it is such an uncommon vegetable, I am not sure why she didn't use someting like a potato or a bell pepper, which are more common. So, I would recommend this book, but be prepared to change some of the words around using your computer, printer, and some glue.

    Editorial Review:

Using the cut-paper technique for which she is applauded, Rebecca Emberley has fashioned appealing books about colors, food, numbers, opposites, and shapes that give the Spanish and English words for each of the simple objects or concepts she illustrates. It is never too early to begin to learn another language, and these four stylish books will help the youngest English and Spanish speakers prepare for the multilingual society in which they will find themselves.
