Better Ideas On The Internet!! 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am a beginning baker, and even I think this book is too basic. It shows primarily how to decorate cupcakes, so its not really a recipe book. If you have Internet access, you can find more creative ideas than in this book. Look at the cover: that's what you get--how to put candy on top of frosting to dec the cakes...that's it! I don't want to pay shipping back to amazon, so I guess someone's getting it for a gift.

Editorial Review:

These cupcakes—from the owner of the Cupcake Caboose Company—are the yummiest and best looking ever! They come in sweet chocolate or creamy vanilla, dyed and decorated with dazzling designs. Best of all, every kid can make one. Ambitious little bakers will enlist a parent’s help and start from scratch, using the well-illustrated recipes for both cupcakes and frosting. Or they might want to get creative with store-bought pastries, mixes, and packaged icings. Either way, becoming a “cupcake artist” is easy, especially with the handy “cupcake key” to explain which are simplest and which need a little more practice. It’s delicious fun!

My daughter and I bought this book. Boy was it filled with some really cute ideas. I am far from crafty but this book is made for little kids so the "recipes" in the book are ultra easy. There were lots of things in there that I would have never thought of on my own. This was a genius idea.

All of of these little board books by Amy singer are great. Perfect for the toddler who loves to turn the pages and learn about something a little different than, ball, duck, and dog!

Editorial Review:

In her sixth book in the World Snacks series, Wilson Sanger pays tribute to dishes from the Italian table. From hearty minestrone and risotto stirred and stirred with heart to sweet, cool gelato, Mangia! Mangia! Introduces young tummies to tasty treats from the land of linguini. Rhyming text and colorful collage art show that there’s much more to Italian food than spaghetti! The back cover features a glossary of Italian terms used in the book.

Diana and Sylvia's most amazing adventure with eggs 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

One of the great joys of being a children's librarian is discovering an amazing and astonishing book like "An Egg Is Quiet" by writer Dianna Aston and illustrator Sylvia Lang. From an egg's first appearance to its triumphant grand opening, an egg lives a very quiet existence (thus the book title).

The end pages (found on the back of the covers and facing page) first demonstrate to the reader, not only the amazing beauty of one egg, just one egg, but also the devotion to duty of the illustrator for showing us this beauty.

The next two pages display the amazing variety of egg patterns, from the cylindrical shape ending in tendrils on both ends of the Dogfish`s egg to the simple elegance of the Emperor Penguin's egg.

Inside the actual informational pages, the reader learns that:
An egg is quiet
An egg is colorful (these two pages get a Wow!)
An egg is shapely
An egg is clever
An egg is artistic
An egg is textured

Next we learn through a lovely comparison chart the growth patterns of a chicken, a fish, and an insect. My favorite concept of the book comes last. In the beginning are the eggs and their patterns. Now we are shown the birds (and a few insects, fish, amphibians) that come from those eggs. Frankly, to use the vernacular, I was blown away!!!

As a librarian on the lookout for creative informational books, I was thrilled to find this book and add it our collection. However, I want to be clear: There is no story here, other than the story of life, but that story is inspiring and awesome. In fact, another concept on display is the Creator's fecund imagination and creativity.

I would like to recommend this book for every home library , but only if someone sits down with the child to explain things. For school libraries "An Egg Is Quiet" is a must-have! Diana and Sylvia will take you on a most amazing adventure with eggs!

Editorial Review:

Award-winning artist Sylvia Long has teamed with up-and-coming author Dianna Aston to create this gorgeous and informative introduction to eggs. From tiny hummingbird eggs to giant ostrich eggs, oval ladybug eggs to tubular dogfish eggs, gooey frog eggs to fossilized dinosaur eggs, it magnificently captures the incredible variety of eggs and celebrates their beauty and wonder.

The evocative text is sure to inspire lively questions and observations. Yet while poetic in voice and elegant in design, the book introduces children to more than 60 types of eggs and an interesting array of egg facts. Even the endpapers brim with information. A tender and fascinating guide that is equally at home being read to a child on a parent's lap as in a classroom reading circle.

Excellent Family Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

IF your kids won't eat broccoli under any circumstances, they won't like it in a recipe in this cookbook, either. Don't raise your kids to be picky eaters. Teach them to be willing to try something new, even if they didn't like it before.

This wholesome cookbook gives creative flair to things like grilled cheese or pizza. My son loves this cookbook and loves to find something new for lunch or dinner. So far, we haven't found one we haven't liked yet. We like the fact that everything is made from scratch and not with fast food mixes and unhealthy products.

Note: My son loves asparagus and broccoli.. and I know many other children that like veggies as well.

Yummy yummy for my tummy 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

"I don't know about you, but I've always been really curious about what other people eat. Being nosy is how I've got some of my best ideas as a chef-and discovered some of my favorite things to eat." -From the Introduction to Let's Eat by Jamie Oliver, The Naked Chef

A beautifully photographed introduction to the
way children from around the world eat

What we eat says a lot about who we are and where we come from. The five children in this book live in very different countries, and they each have their own ideas about what tastes good. But they have lots in common, too: they all go food shopping and help with the cooking, share mealtimes with their families, eat special foods to celebrate, and have things they love to eat and things they definitely don't.

Endorsed by Jamie Oliver, The Naked Chef, this vibrant companion book to Wake Up, World! is a friendly and fascinating introduction to the way people eat and live around the world.

6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is VERY helpful if you are trying to plan a birthday party, or slumber party! It's very organized and easy to read! This book has eight different slumber party planners with tons of different games that you can play and different ideas of theme-parties that you can have! They even have a shopping list for each theme-party at the back of the book! If you are having trouble with a birthday-party-planning, then this book is FOR YOU!!!

Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. They have eight themes that have detailed sleepover plans and ideas for more parties. I liked this book because they had ideas for invitations, games, crafts, and food. At the back of the book there was a tear-out doorknob hanger and there were shopping lists for each theme. The lists are just the right size to put in your purse. So if you love sleepovers, get this book!

Want Your Kids to Eat Rice? 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Read this story to them. Then photocopy the recipe pages. Eating and preparing international rice recipes then become playacting, for this book is all about how, in a multicultural neighborhood, in one delightful evening, all of the households prepare special, spicy and indigenous dishes with this one simple staple. It is a story of our differences. It is a story of our similaries. Moreover, it is a celebration of how rice is the canvas upon which we paint our works of culinary imagination.

Its True! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book shows children that we may all be from different cultures, but in the simplest ways we are very much the same. It is a good first day of school book, or good multicultural education book!

Nice attempt to address multiracial issues to youth, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

...the book fails to address our multicultural society as a whole contingent. The story follows a young white girl while she explores the diversity of her society, but does not work towards unifying the groups she meets together.

For some of you, my criticism might seem picky (which I admittingly will agree to), but as a person of color who has grown up in very diverse neighborhoods and has been collecting children's books on multiculturalism, there is a large absence of material that tries to unify people of color -- some of whom need a lot of healing and mending.

Other than that, the animation in the book is wonderful.

Editorial Review:

A child is sent to find a younger brother at dinnertime and is introduced to a variety of cultures through encountering the many different ways rice is prepared at the different households visited.
