My kids love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My 7 and 8 year old kids had a blast going through these short "mysteries" to solve a crime! The mysteries were a bit challenging, but at the same time not so hard as to frustrate the kids.

As for me, I liked that the reader has to study the picture for each scenario and answer questions at the end for hints to the solution.

Just a note though: When my 8 year old daughter first picked up the book, she put it down shortly after because she didn't understand the style. I had to read through the first scenario and follow-up questions to see what it was all about. But once I explained to her that it is a crime scene of sorts with clues in the picture, and that the questions will help her solve the mystery, she was off & running on her own.

I didn't read through all the scenarios, but the ones I read were a bit silly, with odd details that didn't seem to matter. At first I thought, from an adult perspective, why did they include something like that? But then I realized that is part of the benefit - teaching kids to disregard facts that are not important and focus on the relevant details.

I wish there were more mysteries in each book. And it would be nice if the mysteries were a bit longer or more challenging as they go through the book, maybe even using ideas learned in earlier mysteries. (Each scenario is 1 page including questions, with a picture on the facing page, and my daughter finished the book in about 1 hour).

Even so I will be looking for more of these.

Editorial Review:

With applause for Crime and Puzzlement 1 and 2 still ringing in his ears, Lawrence Treat has conjured up yet another devilishly delightful collection of picture mysteries - this time for young readers.

The clues are in the picture; it's up to you, the young detective, to size up the situation and solve the mystery.

Who stole the jade horse from under Jenny Jackalanda's nose? What did Cheri's mysterious letter really say? Who took Minnie Rahrah's diamond necklace? You find out!

This book has the prettiest designs and will be a nice welcome challenge during the hot summers days when I don't feel like doing much else. I might just try and copy some designs onto t-shirts for my family.

Just breath.... 4 out of 5 stars.

I so enjoyed these pictures. They are somewhat advanced for children under 10 because of the time it takes to complete one page. I sit and enjoy using colored pens and colored pencils to enhance each page. What i have done is cut out the design I completed, matted it, and hung it up like a picture I might have purchased.

Editorial Review:

Thirty traditional designs grace the pages of this unique coloring book. Skillfully adapted from authentic motifs, they depict a pair of peacocks amid lush blossoms, a serpent-like dragon with scaly skin, an idyllic waterscape, revealing a gazebo and pavilion, lilies and foliage in an eye-catching circular configuration, and other richly detailed illustrations.

Mazes, Mazes, Mazes 5 out of 5 stars.

We bought this book for our 4 year old son for a long road trip. He loved it! The publisher suggests a reading age of 9-12, but that's only for the directions on each maze (most of which are self explanatory). I would highly recommend this for maze enthusiasts in the 4-7 age range.

Good but aimed at the wrong age group 3 out of 5 stars.

Younger children will enjoy this book but its mazes have the same look as many free mazes on the web. Do your homework on this book before you want to shell out the money. In my opinion, this book is for children aged 3-7.

A good variety of mazes! 5 out of 5 stars.

I use this book with my elementary school-aged students to work on their perceptual motor skills. I like this book because it has a variety of levels of difficulty from which to choose. There are easy mazes for beginning students, and more difficult overlapping mazes for a more serious challenge. In addition, some of the mazes require the use of problem-solving skills in order to follow the written directions. My students love mazes, and enjoy completing the ones found in this book.

Great For Children, But Not For Adult Game Night 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I'm a pretty big fan of Cranium's games, and since this was touted as a write-it, draw-it, sculpt-it, act-it game for ages 7 and up, I was looking forward to using all my talents. The first thing I noticed is that this probably isn't a book/game for anyone over 15, and my guess is even early teens won't get much use out of it. Once I got over my disappointment that it was truly geared for a much younger audience (than me, anyway), that's when I let go of my preconceived notions and started to play around with the game.

I particularly enjoyed the "Data Head" section as they had lots of fun "science" activities for kids, including a mold experiment that calls for the study of mold in various stages. Your kids can then rank the mold on various sub categories, including a "Stink Factor." Parents may be none too thrilled with this activity, but it should make for an interesting couple of days.

The book also contains a game (get it game in a book in a game) the "Conga Mini Guessing Game." The game is also somewhat simplistic so adults probably only want to invest them time if they're joining their younger family members, but in all this is a nice, self-contained package that has a lot of fun activities and room for creative expression. This is a must-have for your child's bookshelf/playspace, and it also does carries well on the dreaded road trips.

THE PUZZLE IS SOLVED!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Everyone seems to have a problem finding the fourth animal in Lily's Pond. But I have found it! Unscrambling AGILNRST gives the bird STARLING. It is very difficult to find but once you see it, it is very clear. It is at the top right hand side of the page directly below the letter S and the missing P of the frame. It is one of the leaves of the tree. The head is directly below the missing P and the tail is below the S and below another leaf. You have to flip the page upside down to see it. Hopefully this helps you all sleep better tonight!

Editorial Review:

Ambrose Fogarty is doing research on Puzzle Island. He stumbles upon two animals, a male and a female of species that is thought to have been extinct for hundreds of years. He wishes to return the animals to their original habitat. However, he travels on and off the island in a hot air balloon and can only take one of the animals with him. He writes us a letter asking for help to relocate the female animal. He is concerned that someone may exploit the animal and has therefore hidden it somewhere on Puzzle Island, leaving clues which only an animal lover can follow. He has done eleven beautiful paintings of different locations around the island. In them, are hidden the word and picture clues which will lead us to the identity and location of the animal. He has left a map and his diary to guide us as well. Don't forget your hiking boots!

Great for young children who are learning to count to 100 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This book uses good quality white paper and has 62 dot-to-dot puzzles in which all go from the numbers 1-100. With each going to 100, it is a great way to learn or reinforce counting up to 100 skills. The pages have only black print on them, so the resulting image may be colored in. The images are cartoon-like silly pictures such as a smiling monkey, a rabbit licking a big lollipop, and goofy animals wearing clothing and making silly faces. There are a few that try to be scary, a mean-faced cobra, a frowning monster and a mean looking sheriff-bulldog.

These are perfect for young children who are learning to count to 100. Older children may find the puzzles too easy or the images too juvenile.

I also recommend for older children, the educational dot-to-dot books by Monica Russo and others by Evan and Lyle Kimble. Fun books for older kids to adult level are the "Greatest Dot to Dot book in the world" of which there are 4 different books in the series.

Editorial Review:

Learning to count, refining fine motor skills, and having a blast: that's what children will be doing when they complete these fun dot-to-dots. Each cute picture has 100 dots to connect, and youngsters will surely count along as they move the pencil from one number to the next. Nothing's tricky, because the dots follow one another in a nice, smooth, logical progression, not zig-zagging too much to throw kids off course. With delightful images such as a smiling seal, wild-haired boy, and beanie-clad dog, this will become a favorite with pre-schoolers and kindergarteners.

Wonderful product to teach about money matters! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have heard wonderful things about this giving bank and finally decided to implement it with my 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son. Obviously the 2 year old is a little young for the concept, but I drew up a chore chart and at the end of the week they each get $3.00 and each dollar goes into the separate banks. I explained each bank and my 5 year old cannot wait to give her money to "those who don't have any". It's a great teaching tool!

Great Bank 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful tool to help even small children understand saving, spending and tithing. We bought one for a 3 year old and a 5 year old. They both love the bank and understand how to use it.

Good bank, no surprises 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Just a basic bank, what came in the box is just like the picture and description - a bank with three slots in it. The stickers came on a sheet that you had to peel off and stick on the bank, and they were a little hard to get off, but then again, maybe I'm sticker-challenged!

Editorial Review:

This bank is a visual tool to help your child learn where our money should go. Coupled with the Home Allowance and Chore Kit, children learn the value of tithing to the Lord, sharing responsibilities, and spending wisely for a lifetime of financial accountability. Ages 4 years and up.

Somewhat Confusing Methodology and Order of Progression 2 out of 5 stars.
102 of 103 people found this review helpful.

No doubt about it - the graphics and picutures in CHESS FOR KIDS are excellent. This is what I consider to be the good points of the book, now on to the weaknesses,

The weaknesses are:

The order in which the material is given needs some improving. This is not the exact order that a kid (or an adult) should be taught. This creates a degree of confusion.

The level of reading is not well suited for young kids to learn from, and

Some of the ways that things are explained, such as in the rules and certain aspects of strategies could use some improvement.

Editorial Review:

Making chess accessible to kids. International Master Michael Basman invites you into the challenging and exciting world of chess. His simple and accessible text presents the beginner with the rules, skills, and techniques of the game. Every aspect is illustrated with clear step-by-step photography, from setting up the board and basic moves, to more advanced tactics and strategy. A must for any budding Grandmaster!
