To be perfectly honest this book was an utter dissapointment. The language is impressive for the authors age however the overall story line is lacking. The book overemphasized the work effort that the boys upon this team actually underwent, and also downsized the incredible amount of luck that they were able to have 5 extremely talented athletes in two very uncompetetive years for the state of Ohio. In addition the author Joe Shivers desperatley made himself up to be an important member of the team by exagerating the importance of the sixth runner. I myself have competed in numerous major cross country meets and other than within this book I have yet to find a meet where the winner was decided by a sixth runner. This is a prime example of how joe attempted to make his inability to make the top five somehow important and relevant to the story. Overall this is a story of ten or so spoiled boys that manage to be lucky enough through enormous talent and an uncompetetive state meet become state champions. The story has no depth and lacks any sort of inspiration that a book of this nature should posess. If you want a good running book try Running With The Buffaloes by chris lear but do not buy this book for it is a complete disapointment.

Editorial Review:

A fresh perspective enlivens this classic story about a losing team with an energetic new coach. Written by two Ohio teenagers about their high school's cross-country team, this account offers engaging portraits of the kids and their coach, passes on lessons of hard work and sacrifice, and follows the ascent of the Salem Quakers cross-country team to a first-place ranking in their conference and third place at the 2003 state championships. Along the way the teenagers learn the unromantic truth about the athletic association that regulates their high school sport—legal wrangling and uproar ensue when officials find scoring errors in a postseason meet. As they develop their talents and teamwork, the teens also learn valuable lessons about sports rules, bureaucracy, and true success.

A great book to talk about the beach to your child 5 out of 5 stars.

We bought this book just before we went on a beach vacation for our 18 month old. He loves Corduroy. This book has great pictures and the flaps make it very interesting. I looked really hard for a good beach book for my son. This one is the best!

Great for young children 5 out of 5 stars.

As with all of the Corduroy Lift the Flap books (Easter, Christmas, Beach, Halloween, Firehouse, Zoo, Birthday--no longer in print, and Library), this one rates 5 stars......and we own them all! These rate as our absolute favorites in our book collection. The text is not lengthy and the flaps keep my two 1/2 year olds hands busy enough for me to read the text before he is on to the next page. For this reason, they were the only books we read for a long time. The illustrations are fantastic! The story takes you on the course of Corduroy's day-- packing for the beech, finding a spot in the sand, taking a swim, flying a kite, getting ice cream and going on rides on the boardwalk, and looking for treasures in the sand. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Corduroy and his friends are heading to the beach for a fun-filled day of playing by the sea. First they jump over the waves and fly kites, then it’s time for a tasty picnic lunch and a special treat—ice cream! In the afternoon, Corduroy and his pals collect seashells and build sandcastles. Seven spreads filled with thirty-five flaps will keep small fingers happily busy.

The Accidental Cheerleader

By: Elizabeth

The book I wrote about is The Accidental Cheerleader. Sophie and Kylie are best friends forever. Well almost forever. After Kylie signs Sophie and her self up for cheerleading tryouts, Kylie doesn't make the squad. Will Sophie and Kylie still be friends? When Sophie found out she made the squad she was a little mad at Kylie. But when Kylie finds out she is the school mascot, which happens to be a mule, she is furious.
What will happen when Joel Sophie's "friend" asks her to dance and the cheerleaders want her to dance with them? She doesn't think she fits in with the cheerleaders when she shows up at the dance without her party clothes. The author Mimi Mc Coy uses great dialog to make the reader feel like they're in the story. Read on to see how she solves her dilemma.

Editorial Review:

When shy Sophie's best friend, Kylie, signs them both up for cheerleading tryouts, it's Sophie who lands in the spotlight - and Kylie ends up on the sidelines. Now Kylie is stuck playing mascot, and she doesn't exactly get along with Sophie's new friends on the squad. Things really spin out of control right before the big game, and Sophie has to choose sides. Can the girls rediscover how to root for each other before the clock runs out on their friendship?

Steven Thomas is one of two lucky winners of the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association’s contest for aspiring journalists. His prize? A trip to New Orleans and a coveted press pass for the Final Four. It’s a basketball junkie’s dream come true!
But the games going on behind the scenes between the coaches, the players, the media, the money-men, and the fans turn out to be even more fiercely competitive than those on the court. Steven and his fellow winner, Susan Carol Anderson, are nosing around the Superdome and overhear what sounds like a threat to throw the championship game. Now they have just 48 hours to figure out who is blackmailing one of MSU’s star players . . . and why.

Nice introduction to the game for younger kids 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Gail Gibbons's My Basketball Book offers a nice introduction to the rules of basketball with attractive illustrations. The rules are displayed during a game between two teams of kids, the Comets and the Blasters. Gibbons's text offers enough details to give younger gradeschoolers the basics of the game in a fun manner. It's a favorite for my basketball-obsessed son.

This was a really great book i think all of jhon feinstein's fiction books. Cover Up was the graetest yet though it has some character for the readers that like that type of book yet thier is a lot of action for readers that like that. All in all it was one of the best books I have ever read

Suspenseful and hard to put down 4 out of 5 stars.

Stevie Thomas and Susan Carol Anderson are not your typical fourteen-year-olds. After solving mysteries at the Final Four and the U.S. Open in two previous books in this series, the duo is at it again, this time at the Super Bowl.

After solving the U.S. Open mystery, Stevie and Susan Carol are offered a job on a USTV show called Kid Sports. The show is aimed at teenage viewers, and both Stevie and Susan Carol are excited when they learn that they will be headed to the Super Bowl to cover the game on their show. Just before they are ready to go, Stevie learns that he is going to be replaced on the show by rock star Jamie Whitsitt. Whitsitt knows nothing about sports, but USTV hopes that his popularity and good looks will help give their ratings a boost. Susan Carol is devastated and wants to quit as soon as she hears the news, but her contract won't allow her to. Susan Carol couldn't imagine the Super Bowl without Stevie, but as it turns out Stevie will be at the Super Bowl anyway after a friend of his gets him a job with the Washington Herald.

Susan Carol is at a party a few days before the game when she hears some incredible news. A drunken team doctor for the California Dreams, not realizing who he is talking to, tells Susan Carol that the whole starting offensive line has failed their drug tests and shouldn't even be playing. On top of that, he says, the owner of the Dreams, Don Meeker, knows about the results and is covering it up. Will Meeker get away with the cover-up or will Susan Carol and Stevie find a way to convict him? Read the book to find out.

Although it's pretty unrealistic that two teens would uncover three huge sports mysteries like Stevie and Susan Carol do in this series, this story still feels very real and is suspenseful right up until the very end. The author, John Feinstein, has experience as a sports journalist at the Washington Post and really knows from experience how crazy and exciting Super Bowl week can be. The inside details used makes this book feel absolutely real. It is the nonfiction-like details combined with mystery and likeable characters that make this book hard to put down until you are finished.

Editorial Review:

THE SUPER BOWL. America's biggest sports spectacle. More than 95 million fans will be watching, but Steve Thomas and Susan Carol Anderson know that what they'll be watching is a lie. They know that the entire offensive line of the California Dreams have failed their doping tests and that the Dreams' owner is trying to cover up the test results. These two teens are sitting on the biggest sports scandal of the decade. What they don't know -yet - is how to prove it.

Tiger by Jeff Stone 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is about five kids who live in a temple. Each of them has been taught a different style of animal martial-arts by their grandmaster. One night, Fu, who was taught the tiger style, was woken up by the grandmaster. Ying, who used to live at the temple, and is an eagle-style master, was invading the temple with the emperor's troops in search of the dragon scrolls, which taught you the complete dragon style. The boys were told to hide, and a fierce battle ensued. In the following war, everyone except the kids was massacred.
The boys fled, as they were told to do. Fu, however, circled back, stole the dragon scrolls from Ying's troops, and sets out on a journey to find help.
This is a great book and I recommend you read it. It keeps you in the book with fast-paced action and some humorous parts. After you finish it, you should read the other books in The Five Ancestors series, starting with Monkey, the second book.

Editorial Review:

Twelve-year-old Fu and his temple brothers Malao, Seh, Hok, and Long don’t know who their parents were. Raised from infancy by their grandmaster, they think of their temple as their home and their fellow warrior monks—their “temple brothers”—as their family. Then one terrible night, the temple is destroyed. Fu and his brothers are the only survivors. Charged by their grandmaster to uncover the secrets of their past, the five flee into the countryside and go their separate ways. Book #1 follows Fu as he struggles to find out more and prove himself in the process.

Perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for kids! I bought it to introduce my six year old son to baseball. It covers how the game is actually played, rules of play, and reinforces important baseball terms. At just the right length, this book is perfectly titled - My Baseball Book. Great for any budding, young baseball fan!

Introducing the game of baseball to younger readers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"My Baseball Book" by Gail Gibbons provides an introduction to the sport of baseball by describing the equipment, playing field, rules, players, and process of the game. The idea is to explain the basics to young readers (ages 3 to 7), so they will understand not only the markings on a baseball diamond, what baseball players wear, and all the positions, but also get a sense of how games are played and why a home run can be a big thrill. Most of the book is devoted to Gibbons describing a game between the Robins and the Owls, in which young readers get the chance to see hits, walks, runs, and other baseball plays in the context of a game.

Although this is supposed to be an introductory book to the game of baseball the information does get a bit technical at times, which means that an adult or older sibling is going to have to explain this a bit more. For example, at one point it is explained that in addition to being a strike if the batter swings and misses that it is also a strike if the batter does not swing but the ball passes through the "strike zone." There are dotted lines suggesting that the strike zone extends from the batter's armpits to his knees, but nothing to add that the ball also has to be over the plate (until you get to the term "strike" in the glossary in the back of the book). Still, on balance "My Baseball Book" is going to help kids by reinforcing what they are learning out on the field, which is the most important way of learning the game.

I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

The book is really better than it looks like! 5 out of 5 stars.
