4 ½ Georgie Dans Le Forest 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

When the now iconic Man in the Big Yellow Hat warns Curious George,"now don't wander off and get into trouble," we know exactly what's about to happen instead (especially since he had already rushed off). Despite his good intentions, George adventures turn into misadventures: Dousing someone's campfire, getting lost with a galloping deer, and being sprayed by a skunk that George thought was a cat. As usual in these series (story by Margret Rey, with illustrations by a team in the style of the late H.A. Rey), George's curiosity also leads to some monkey heroics. He also learns how to get rid of skunk smell (a vat of tomato juice).

Given its forest setting, this is a somewhat quieter `George book,' but there are soft forest and animal drawings and enough action for the small ones. Curious George is now "a registered trademark of the Houghton Mifflin," but the company encourages young readers to look for the `original adventures about Curious George' by the Reys. 24 pages, with pencil and watercolor illustrations on each one.

Editorial Review:

George and the man with the yellow hat are going camping! George tries to be helpful, but after he upsets a neighboring camper, he is chased into the woods and gets lost. Before long, an encounter with a cute forest creature throws George into a chain of outrageous events that allows him to find a way to be helpful after all.

Life's a Beach ...George!! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book and Curious George himself takes me back to a gentler time. A time when I was young and a time when my son was young. He and I LOVE to read all about George's silly mishaps daily.

This book was an automatic favorite because we live in Rhode Island and live at the beach in the summer. So he would always take this book and his george doll down in his bag. These stories are filled with laughter and love, two things a child can't get enough of and there is usually even a good manners lesson taught to George too that they don't soon forget.

So, any of the Curious George series is a winner with our family...and we don't even live near the "man with the yellow hat". lol*

Have fun and make each night a night you read to your child...it's so important. I even read to him in the womb each night. He talked early and certainly knew my voice almost immediately.

A winner any way you look at it. : ) Thank you George.

Editorial Review:

One hot summer day, George and the man with the yellow hat go to the beach. What fun George has at the beach! What fun he has feeding the seagulls! It's fun, that is, until they fly away with something valuable and George must find a clever way to save the day.

Winter didn't dance for me 2 out of 5 stars.

Very disappointing book. Boring, lots of padding. Poor and repetative story line. Not well written. Couldn't even read it to the end which I'm sad about as I love books and don't give up easily.

Tons of fun 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the most entertaining books I have ever read. After reading one of the other reviews where the criticism was the authors lack of writing skills, for-gedda-bout-it. This book wasn't meant for your English Lit class. It's about one crazy dude's journey. It's funny, it's gritty, it's real, and if you're a dog lover, it's both happy and sad. I give it 10 thumbs up (ok, so I'm "all thumbs").

Excellent, very well written book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book a few years ago, and it practically had me rolling on the floor laughing at times. Finally got it for myself to own, and it's still every bit as good. Gary Paulsen has a wonderful way with words, and is an excellent storyteller. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone.

Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

A great Christmas-book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"Clifford's Christmas" is a great Christmas-book! It tells the story about Clifford and how he celebrates the Christmastime. He has his own Christmastree and he gets to meet the Santa Claus. The book shows children all the nice things that can happen to you during the Christmastime.

Read to Your Child for Greater Bonding and Intellect! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children isvaluable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Clifford's Christmas was one of her picks.

This book takes a very large dog's eye view of the Christmas season, beginning with Thanksgiving. Clifford is much larger than Emily Elizabeth or her house. In fact, Clifford is so large he is as big as a helium-filled turkey balloon at the Thanksgiving Day parade.

Clifford makes different kinds of snowmen, plays ice hockey differently, and brings home a Christmas tree that is only the right size for him (not the family). On Christmas, Clifford and Santa Claus have some interesting interactions.

The result is to help your child develop a nonhuman perspective that will expand her or his intelligence and perception. That's a wonderful benefit to get from such a simple story.

Overcome your misconception stall that everything about children has to be seen from a child's perspective for a child to learn.

Enjoy!

Family Fun in the Snow 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Children's books seem like they are a dime a dozen. I paid no attention to children's books in the past, but with my two little girls, I notice them more than before, and one thing I have quickly discovered is that, in many instances, there is very little to distinguish one from the other. This is why I am ever so grateful when I discover a book that has something unique to offer. And Snowballs is certainly one such book; offering illustrations and dialogue that sets it apart from other children's books.

Many things about this book make it worthwhile and one of the things I like is the creative dialogue. There aren't a large number of words, no. But I like the way the author starts out talking about birds and how they are often very scarce when snow starts to fall. This may not seem like a big deal, but it shows that this author wanted to make the book a little more creative than the usual children's book.

The words in this book are kept to a minimum, like they are in most children's books, but they are still effective and they state just enough to hold the attention of most youngsters. However, the best aspect of this book isn't the words- it's the drawings. What makes the illustrations so different from other children's books isn't necessarily the colorfulness of the illustrations, although the colors are memorable. What makes the pictures stand out in a crowd is the fact that they combine real pictures with drawings. For example, in the opening pages when the book is talking about birds, it is depicting pieces of popcorn, peanuts, bird seed, etc., in actual photos- not just drawings. These are superimposed on top of drawings of the snow family. Even the snow family shows actual items, like scarves, bows, leaves, twigs, and other things, giving the pictures a very realistic appearance.

Overall, Snowballs is a very good children's book about snowfall and family. We won't be seeing any of the white, fluffy flakes falling from the sky in my neck of the woods (Gulf Coast). But we will be enjoying books like Snowballs- books that enthrall children with their well- illustrated pages and their emphasis on family.

Editorial Review:

Pull on your mittens and head outside for a snowball day. Grab some snow and start rolling. With a few found objects--like buttons and fabric and seeds--and a little imagination, you can create a whole family out of snow. Children will love poring over Lois Ehlert’s bold, funny illustrations and identifying the common (and not so common) objects she uses to decorate her snowy family.

An Awesome Baseball Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Heat is one of the most enjoyable, interesting books I've ever read. Michael, a typical boy with a great right arm is the main character. He lives with his brother Carlos. His dad is supposedly caring for a sick relitive in Florida. Michael faces hardships and problems, but keeps himself going with friends and Carlos.
Baseball helps Michael with his life problems as well. It makes him feel ike all of his problems can disappear. But things in Michael's life aren't always so picture-perfect.
One boy in Michaels baseball league thinks Michael is too old for little league baseball. He is jealous of Michael because is right arm is so powerful. He and his father(the coach of his son's little league team) demand a birth certificate for Michael's ability to play. Michael was born in Cuba so he has a very hard time trying to find his birth certificate.
Michael has a best friend named Manny. I think he is te perfect so called "side-kick" for Michael. He is funny and keeps Michael's spirit up through out the book. Over all I give Heat five stars!
Gretchen - Grade 5

Editorial Review:

Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-yearold brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system—or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael’s secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources.

Editorial Review:

"We are the ship; all else the sea."--Rube Foster, founder of the Negro National League

The story of Negro League baseball is the story of gifted athletes and determined owners; of racial discrimination and international sportsmanship; of fortunes won and lost; of triumphs and defeats on and off the field. It is a perfect mirror for the social and political history of black America in the first half of the twentieth century. But most of all, the story of the Negro Leagues is about hundreds of unsung heroes who overcame segregation, hatred, terrible conditions, and low pay to do the one thing they loved more than anything else in the world: play ball. Using an "Everyman" player as his narrator, Kadir Nelson tells the story of Negro League baseball from its beginnings in the 1920s through its decline after Jackie Robinson crossed over to the majors in 1947. The voice is so authentic, you will feel as if you are sitting on dusty bleachers listening intently to the memories of a man who has known the great ballplayers of that time and shared their experiences. But what makes this book so outstanding are the dozens of full-page and double-page oil paintings--breathtaking in their perspectives, rich in emotion, and created with understanding and affection for these lost heroes of our national game.

We Are the Ship is a tour de force for baseball lovers of all ages.

What a thrill 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is great! I teach middle school students where we do a One Book, One Community unit every year that the entire school gets involved with. I was very impressed with this book. It is a fast paced read that really intrigues the reader. I felt myself climbing Mt. Everest as I was reading. I feel honored that the author will be visiting our school later in the school year to meet with our staff and students.

Editorial Review:

After Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, he’s left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or to go live with his long-lost father, who runs a climbing company in Thailand. But Peak quickly learns that his father’s renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. He wants Peak to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit—and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime. But it’s also one that could cost him his life.

Two-Minute Drill: Mike Lupica's Comeback Kids 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a very good book, my son is finishing it right now, it seems he appreciates sports more as a result of the book, and also that there is a tie into the sciences. Very well written, as an adult, I'm also going to read it. Well done Mike Lupica, thanks for joining the gap on sports and friendships.

The Greastest Game Ever Played Middle School Style 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

And... it's good! I think it was brilliant for Mike Lupica to name his book the Two-Minute Drill. A reason I enjoyed reading this book was that it shows how one friend can make all the difference. Also, the way the main charters, Scott and Chris worked together to solve their challenges is something I liked. Chris encourages Scott to join the football team. My favorite charter is Chris because he is a great quarterback and a great friend. The football team has to run a two minute drill to win the championship. They both had personal setbacks but they accomplished their goals on and off the field. The story is told in Scott's point of view. I recommend it to people that love sports and challenges or conflicts and people that love sports fiction. Mike Lupica's style was hard to get used to but once you get in there's no getting out especially if you like sports fiction and football. The middle of the book was easier to read because I understood the story. If you have already read this book I recommend Hot Hand another book in the series. This book is a must for football fans!

Editorial Review:

Chris Conlan is the coolest kid in sixth grade—the golden-armed quarterback of the football team, and the boy all the others look up to. Scott Parry is the new kid, the boy with the huge brain, but with feet that trip over themselves daily. These two boys may seem like an odd couple, but each has a secret that draws them together as friends, and proves that the will to succeed is even more important than raw talent.

#1 New York Times bestseller Mike Lupica scores from downtown with this new series for young middle-grade readers.

Great story - Better message. 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is the first chapter book for kids by Tiki and Ronde Barber. I started getting Tiki and Ronde's fine picture books for my son because he saw Tiki and Ronde speaking about it on MNF. They are quality stories with excellent messages for kids. Tiki and Ronde are role models that a parent can embrace for their character, which is something I am always struggling with when I find sports related books for my son.

Editorial Review:

"Hut! Hut! Go long, Tiki!"

Tiki and Ronde's twelfth summer is winding down -- the nights are gettingshorter and the evenings cooler. That means two things: The first day of junior high is just a few days away, and it's almost the start of footballseason at last. With two championships and an 8-2 season last year, Tiki and Ronde are ready to graduate from the Peewee League and hit the field asstarting players for the Hidden Valley Eagles.

But junior high is a lot bigger than elementary school. The competition forstarting spots is stiff, and seniority rules. If Tiki and Ronde make itpast tryouts and cuts, will they get the chance to play, or will they haveto spend the season watching from the bench with the other seventh graders?

Inspired by the childhood of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, Kickoff! is a story of teamwork, perseverance, and what it takes tobe a champion.
