Editorial Review:

"This is a boy whose name is Mike. This is Mike’s pride and joy—his bike…"

So begins the inspiring tale of a boy, his best friend, and the adventurous relationship that many children begin when they are young and continue the rest their lives!

Illustrated in a retro-contemporary style, Mike and The Bike rhymes its way through Mike's choosing of his favorite toy - his bike (of course!) - and follows him off on adventures around the world and back home, where he goes to bed wearing his helmet, ready for the next day!

Mike and The Bike is the first children’s book written by Grammy Award–winning guitarist and songwriter, avid cyclist and riding partner of Lance Armstrong, Michael Ward.

Mike and the Bike came into being, appropriately enough, while Michael cycled near his home in Los Angeles.

Includes a foreword by 6-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and a 30-minute CD with music by Michael and his son, Tennessee Ward, plus a special musical narration of Mike and the Bike by the "Voice of Cycling," Phil Liggett.

FANTASTIC ILLUSTRATIONS 5 out of 5 stars.

The art work and illustrations in this book are terrific and will hold childrens' attention for countless readings. Much like a "Where is Waldo" there's always more funny and amusing detail to find in the pictures. Illustrator Barbera's use of color is stunning. We really like this book.

Brilliant! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is super fun for kids and adults alike. It is full of hidden surprises in its illustrations that capture the craziness and excitement of the Tour de France, and it sends a great message that in life, you just have to keep pedaling!

Editorial Review:

Riders, get ready!

The biggest bicycle race in the world is about to begin—the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong is the fastest, most famous bike rider in the world, so what could go wrong?

Plenty!

From rainstorms to crashes to cows in the road, Lance goes the distance to show that winners never quit. And—while Lance pedals—you'll enjoy discovering funny details and recurring characters in art that gives a spectacular view of the race.

This book really tells you everything you need to know about caring for your bike including repairs, tune-ups, safety tips, etc. As other reviewers have said, it's a great resource for adults and kids alike. Sarah Rakitin's illustrations are both cute and helpful. A great addition to anyone's library!

SENIOR ADULTS BECAME KIDS AGAIN 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It is evident to me after reading this book, as a senior citizen who just bought a new bicycle, that the contents of this book are not just for kids. It was extremely helpful to both me and my husband who are SENIOR kids. This book would be a very appropriate purchase for anyone regardless of age who owns or is contemplating buying a bicycle. After reading this book, children of ALL AGES would gain the confidence to maintain and use their bicycle safely. This book should be available at all bicycle shops.

Editorial Review:

For ages 8+. A clear and detailed guide to bike maintenance, written in an accessible, chatty style. Although the first and last chapters briefly cover road safety, helmet use, equipment, and clothing, most of the book is devoted to describing the parts of a bike, how to keep them functioning well, and how to do repairs. Covering both road and mountain bikes, Cole constantly stresses safety and attention to detail, and offers sound advice about when to rely on a bike shop and the importance of checking your work with an adult when you've adjusted crucial parts such as brakes. The page design is playful yet clean.

Not bad 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This isn't a bad biography for a Jr. High or High School student. Obviously, this isn't as good as his autobiography, "It's Not About the Bike." My biggest complaint is that I bought it in a scholastic book catalog for use in my 4th grade class library, but some of the subject matter is too graphic for 4th graders. I was hoping it would gloss over his type of cancer, but it goes into great detail in terms of the symptoms (especially the swelling), the surgery, and the fertilization of his wife's eggs. Again, this would be great for a Jr. High student, but not a 10 year old.

Editorial Review:

BACK ON THE BIKE

LANCE ARMSTRONG is the premier cyclist in sports history. But the road to victory has not been smooth, which makes his story all the more compelling.

In 1991 he was the National Amateur Cycling Champion, and a professional career seemed guaranteed. But a grim diagnosis of cancer in 1996 threatened to cut the career -- and his life -- short. With the help of family, friends, and a dedicated team of doctors, Lance began the hard work not only to beat the disease, but to get back on the bike.

By the summer of 1999 Lance was not only back, he was leading the pack to his first Tour de France win. And he hasn't stopped winning since that sweet victory.

Here's the story of Lance Armstrong, from his first ride, to his most recent race, and all the twists and turns in between!
