Awesome book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Playing with the Boys is even better than the first book in the Pretty Tough series. I love how gutsy Lucy is - how she shows that girls can do anything they want. I laughed and cried along with her and after reading this book, I may want to try out for the football team. What a great way to meet guys!!

Editorial Review:

New girl Lucy is desperate for friends. She tries out for Beachwood High soccer, but despite her amazingly accurate kick, fails to make the team. When the Coach points out that varsity football is looking for a new kicker, Lucy is skeptical. Football? Isn’t that a boys’ game?

But on the gridiron Lucy discovers that she feels strong—in control for the first time since her mother died. She loves football. She actually wants to play! (She also wants to hang out with super-cute quarterback Ryan Conner. But that’s just icing on the cake.)

Too bad no one else wants her on the team. Not the boys’ coach, not her teammates, and especially not her overprotective dad. Will Lucy cave in to the pressure? Or will she prove she’s pretty tough after all?

Editorial Review:

Jim Thorpe was one of the greatest athletes who ever lived. He played professional football, Major League Baseball, and won Olympic gold medals in track & field. But his life wasn’t an easy one. Born on the Sac and Fox Reservation in 1887, he encountered much family tragedy, and was sent as a young boy to various Indian boarding schools—strict, cold institutions that didn’t allow their students to hold on to their Native American languages and traditions. Jim ran away from school many times, until he found his calling at Pennsylvania’s Carlisle Indian School. There, the now-legendary coach Pop Warner recognized Jim’s athletic excellence and welcomed him onto the football and track teams.

Focusing on Jim Thorpe’s years at Carlisle, this book brings his early athletic career—and especially his college football days—to life, while also dispelling some myths about him and movingly depicting the Native American experience at the turn of the twentieth century. This is a book for history buffs as well as sports fans—an illuminating and lively read about a truly great American.

I simply could NOT put this book down. After turning the last page, I was emotionally wrung out. I had laughed, cried, sat on the very edge of my seat... I can't WAIT for the sequel!!

This itty bitty book is great for itty bitty hands 5 out of 5 stars.

My son, now 14 months, loves this book. We would read it to him when he was an infan, and now he loves to flip through it by himself and "read" it outloud. It's just the right size, and the content is simple and colorful.

Great Gift 4 out of 5 stars.

A great gift book for infants or preschoolers. Some fans might be upset that not all teams are represented! But why not teach your child the color gold with a picture of a Super Bowl ring?

Shy Violet, but Otherwise Excellent 4 out of 5 stars.

My 11 month daughter loves this book. The colors in the pictures are so vivid. I do think it is a little strange that violet/purple is not represented, but we like the book anyway. Lifting the flaps is a nice change of pace if you're like us and read a lot of touch and feel books. It's a good value for the price and would make a nice gift.

Editorial Review:

These fun-filled sticker books are also great teaching tools. Young children will learn the basic concepts of shapes, sorting, opposites, and colors while they match the stickers to their appropriate places.

I first saw this in a school order form but the price was better on Amazon. My son loves it!

Great book, great info and better than older Madden books in terms of quality info 4 out of 5 stars.

Over the years, John Madden covered mostly NFC games for CBS from 1979-94, and then again for FOX from 1994-2002. Then he went on to ABC and now NBC, on a more neutral path, again with Al Michaels. It all added up to what seemed to be too NFC biased. This probably comes from, as most fans know, the network that covers the game will be connected with the visiting team in a case of interconference games. If it's NFC vs. NFC, fine. Here's an interconference example from 1988: Minnesota Vikings at Buffalo Bills. CBS was the network since the NFC team was on the road.
Years of this caught up with Madden, which is funny because he was a Raiders (AFC) guy in the 60s and 70s. For a while, he would certainly talk up the great teams of the 80s and 90s during a broadcast - Giants, Rams, Bears, Skins, Packers, 49ers, Eagles - all from the NFC. Too much bias towards the "home" conference in my opinion. It didn't seem like he was on board or had the respect for a lot of Hall of Famers from the AFC since he didn't cover those games as much. Even his "All-Madden" teams seemed to leave off some great AFC players from that era. Despite the fact that the NFC was on the super bowl winning streak, that shouldn't be the reason to talk up the NFC: Things have changed now with the AFC winning 8/10, and it seems like an even playing field throughout the entire league. The super bowls that John Madden covered in the past seemed like he was going for home network team!!
In this book, he finally gets it right. He gives props to many great players no matter what conference they are/were from. Great photos are scattered throuout. A great source of info for the proper age group. The stories flow with ease and are very informative. The adults who may be reading this book to their kids will smile with a lot of football history and great memories.

Editorial Review:

For millions of fans, John Madden’s name is synonymous with football. Whether as a Super Bowl-winning coach, an Emmy Award-winning analyst, or the namesake of the most popular sports video game of all time, Madden NFL, he has studied the game from every angle. In Heroes of Football, Madden uses his extensive knowledge to detail the dominating dynasties, prominent players, game-making plays, and season-ending games that transformed professional football from its rough-and-tumble beginnings to the country’s biggest sport.

Filled with photos, sidebars, and analytical charts, John Madden’s Heroes of Football: The Story of America’s Game is the ultimate book for young football fans.

The book title says it all 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This a small book full of football facts, just as the title says. There are no pictures or diagrams, and not many references to famous players. It's a lot of stats, like what the score of the first Army vs. Navy game was or who has the most rushing yards at a Super Bowl. My fact-loving 9 year old likes the book, but there's not much here for younger kids. This book is more like a traditional encyclopedia focused on football, and definitely for the older crowd.

A gripping tale so well-written 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What's most amazing about this book, to me, is that it has all of the insight and vivid detail you'd expect from a prolific writer like Lipsyte, but he's captured the tone and pacing you'd expect to encounter in a high school. He truly immersed himself in the culture of high school and high-level high school sports, and he places the reader right there in the locker room and in conversations in a way you'd swear you were listening to two 17-year-olds talk.

The book is also an incredible tool in the fights against cruel hazing and doping. Without beating you over the head with the message, Lipsyte shows everything that is wrong with the darkest sides of sports. A must-read for every high school athlete.

Editorial Review:

What's it mean to think team? It means you don't talk team business with anybody who isn't on the team. It means whatever happens inside the team stays inside. It means you can only trust a brother Raider. Any questions?

At Nearmont High School, football stars are treated like royalty, and Matt Rydek has just ascended to the throne. He's got it all: hot girls, chill friends, plenty of juice to make him strong, and a winning team poised to go all the way. If he can keep his eye on the ball now, his future will be set. But when the team turns on one of its own, should Matt play by Raiders rules, or should he go long alone?

I love the Betsy books. She has lots of friends. Betsy and the Boys is great! It is a very fast and easy book. Haywood did a very good job. I love to read them over again. It is a wonderful book.

Ageless enjoyment 5 out of 5 stars.

My seven-year-old daughter enjoys this book as much as I did, and my mother before me! Betsy and her friends have a kind of ageless fun and action, even as their surroundings change from ours.

Editorial Review:

Carolyn Haywood's stories about her irrepressible character Betsy have never been out of print, and now, thanks to dynamic new covers, the Betsy books will find their way onto the bookshelves of modern young readers--and into the hearts of a whole new generation.

It's a new year, and Betsy has a new wish: She is going to play football on the boys' team. Of course, the boys refuse to play football with a girl. That is, until Betsy and Mr. Kilpatrick cook up a secret plan to win Betsy a spot on the team. . . .
