Editorial Review:

Illustrated by Bruce Langton

Like most boys growing up in Michigan in the early 1900s, George Gipp enjoyed playing sports. But even as a small boy, his athletic skills set him apart from the others. When he is awarded a baseball scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, his future seems set. An afternoon's horseplay with a football, however, brings George to the attention of assistant football coach Knute Rockne, and Notre Dame football is transformed forever. Setting records and winning fans' hearts, George seems unstoppable -- until cruel fate intervenes. Now, for every young reader who has ever wondered about the phrase "Win one for the Gipper," comes the inspiring story of the legendary George Gipp.

Kathy-jo Wargin has written such bestselling titles as The Legend of Sleeping Bear, The Legend of the Loon, and The Edmund Fitzgerald: Song of the Bell. She is a faculty member of the Bear River Writers Workshop, sponsored by the University of Michigan. She lives with her family in Petoskey, Michigan.

Bruce Langton's unmistakable style and unique ability to capture not only sporting and wildlife scenes, but also contemporary landscapes has won him numerous awards including the 1998 Featured Artist for the Northern Wildlife Art Expo. Win One for the Gipper is Bruce's seventh book with Sleeping Bear Press. He lives with his family in Granger, Indiana. (20041129)

John Elway was raised to be a winner. 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book tells about John Elway's life from the beginning. He was raised to be a winner, but he also tells us that winning isn't everything. I liked how he showed that everything wasn't always easy and perfect for him. He got in trouble like any other kid. He also tells what it was like to feel the sting of losing in the superbowl. A billboard in Denver read: "How does it feel to embarrass a city?" The book also tells about his family life growing up. He mentions how he is eleven minutes older than his twin sister. All in all, I think this was a wonderful book, especially for those interested in football and the Denver Broncos.

Elway's a winner! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book lets the reader know what Elway's life was like from childhood to adulthood. It gives glimpses of him as a person as well as a football player. One important theme is that he hates to lose. He states that "one important thing I have noticed about people who are winners is that, to them, losing is always temporary."
I enjoyed reading this book very much. Once I started it, I really did get into it. It was hard to put it down, even though I was supposed to be sleeping.
The book's layout was really nice. Text boxes were set aside for John Elway's words, making me feel like I was truly talking to him. Each page had colorful pictures. This helped me see what he looked like throughout his life. I also enjoyed seeing the different uniforms he wore.
Another reason I liked the book is the humor that Elway uses throughout it. He makes fun of himself and the sthings he sometimes did. I enjoy reading humorous books.
I also enjoy reading about a football player. His early life was interesting to me because it seems to be a lot like mine. Reading about football players is a good way to encourage myself to do well in my sport.
I admire Elway's opinion that family is important. I know that my family means the world to me. During tough times, John Elway could rely on the love of his family. I enjoy knowing that he is a family man.
I think Elway could have done a better job describing his Super Bowl games. He didn't give a good description of the Super Bowl games he won or lost. There is only one text box with Super Bowl statistics.
If someone enjoys reading about sports they would enjoy reading this book. It could help an athlete to understand what it takes to be successful in the sport of football. Anyone who enjoys reading humorous books would enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

He's just Robbie, Robbie from the block 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am a massive fan of Fowler the footballer. His life had all the ingredients for an interesting book: phenomenal talent, early success, hilarious pranks, bastard managers, terrible injuries, bad luck. He also seemed more honest and witty than your average footballer, so I had high expectations from his autobiography, but they were not met.

Unfortunately the book is, simply put, poorly written--which is not his fault I suppose. The tone is annoyingly apologetic, with some justifications (he's just a kid from Toxteth) repeated like mantras every three pages. Also annoyingly, whenever he makes a reference to his past success, which was phenomenal, he sounds defensive and adds that he's not arrogant about it (he's still just a kid from Toxteth). The amateurish mistake of the book is that it tells us how we should feel about him instead of just getting on with telling his story an letting us make up our minds about how to feel about him.

Books of this kind are at their best when they tell behind-the-scenses stories which were previously secret. This book is very thin in this area. Some funny stories about Eriksson and Houlier, the bastard managers from hell as far as Fowler is concerned, provide some color and interest but not enough. The actual stories are few and poorly told, with little in the way of insightful detail. The language lacks verve, except for odd foul words here and there, which seem strident rather than authentic. For authenticity, some self-incrimination on at least some occasions (for example the disgusting incident with LeSaux) would have been useful, but he goes at great lenghts to exculpate himself every single time (he was just a kid from Toxteth, you know).

I am convinced though that his life is a fascinating one and maybe sometimes, after he retires he'll have anohter go at it with a better ghostwriter.

Editorial Review:

Pronounced as the greatest goalscoring talent since Jimmy Greaves, 17-year old Robbie Fowler was immediately catapulted to fame and fortune. The thin, baby-faced Toxteth lad was now a millionaire, an idol, and inspiration to every kid who kicked a soccer ball. Yet his incredible potential was never quite realized. Injuries and persistent rumors of drug abuse and depression meant that he never became the world-beater so many predicted. This is a fascinating and unbelievably frank insight into the game, and a candid account of an incredible career, taking us behind the closed doors of professional soccer to expose what really happens at both club and international level.

Review: The History of the Dallas Cowboys

Hawkes, Brian. The History of the Dallas Cowboys (NFL Today). Mankato, MN: Creative Education, 2005. HB, 48p, illus. list: 27.10 ISBN: 1-58341-294-8

This thin volume is heavy on photography and light on text. The device of adding "graininess" to some of the images evokes antique photos from the 60s, when the Dallas Cowboys were struggling to reach .500. But even in a few pages, the author does a great job of covering the hi-lights of the history of this storied franchise.

Hawkes accurately summarizes the struggles of those Cowboys teams, from the NFL awarding the franchise to owner Clint Murchison, to the hiring of GM Tex Schramm and head coach Tom Landry, to the deal-making that led to the acquisitions of QB Don Meredith and FB Don Perkins without the benefit of a college draft (the franchise was awarded after the NFL draft).

The Cowboys fought hard under the leadership of diminutive QB Eddie LeBaron, but didn't win consistently until Meredith took over. Still, the Cowboys lost two straight NFL Championships to the Green Bay Packers, and could not win "The Big One" until after Meredith retired and Roger Staubach took over at QB.

With Roger "the Dodger" at the controls, the Cowboys played in five Super Bowls in the 70s (winning two) and was the winningest team of the decade, earning for themselves the title of "America's Team".

The winning ways continued after Staubach's retirement in 1979 -- with QB Danny White and RB Tony Dorsett leading the way, the Cowboys played in three straight NFC championship games to open the decade of the 80s, but again, the Cowboys could not finish the seasons with a championship. The worst was yet to come, as the Cowboys finished the decade with losing records every year from 1986-1989.

A new era dawned when Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys in April, 1989. Even though the Cowboys went 1-15 in 1989, changes were underway. Jimmy Johnson replaced the legendary Tom Landry as head coach, and quickly turned the team around. Johnson traded star RB Herschel Walker to the Vikings for a bevy of players and draft picks.

Jones and Johnson parlayed those choices into three Super Bowl championships in the early 90s. Led by the dynamic "Triplets" of WR Michael Irvin, QB Troy Aikman, and RB Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys dominated the 90s, but again finished the decade on a down note, making the playoffs but not advancing.

After finishing 5-11 in 2002, Jones hired Bill Parcells as head coach, and he immediately turned the team around, leading them to a 10-6 finish in 2003. The Cowboys looked poised to once again be successful in the 2000s.
