We purchased this book for two young boys. They really enjoyed it and the adults who read it approved of the message. Good gift for young men.

Editorial Review:

In "Catch & Connect," Kansas City Chiefs’ five-time Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez shows us that the road to athletic greatness and personal fulfillment is not always a smooth one.

From conquering a fear of bullying to building deep relationships with his extended family and civic communities, Tony demonstrates the power of recognizing and acting on what’s really important in life.

Enter Brady, the 24-year-old kid from the University of Michigan. Only his second year in the NFL, Brady had spent his rookie year as a fourth-string quarterback. But during the off-season, he proved he could be something more. He pulled the Patriots from a losing record to win the playoffs. Much to football's surprise, he then expertly navigated his team to victory in Super Bowl XXXVI."Tom Brady" is the inspiring story of how one man captivated millions of hearts in America. Covering Brady's childhood, influences, setbacks, and triumphs, this exciting, full-color biography is sure to become a favorite for loyal football fans.

Excellent summary of #7's NFL life and career 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a great read for Bronco and Elway fans of any age. It chronicles the life of John Elway from the time he was a child, through college and his joining of the Broncos, to his victory against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Black and white pictures are included with each chapter, and the center section 14 pages of color photos, as well. The author (Clay Lattimer) is a sports writer for the Rocky Mountain News, and he also draws on Sports Illustrated, Becket Football Monthly, and even Newsweek, as well as several other sports sources, so he packs a lot of information, dates, and statistics into each chapter. He also packs a lot of superfluous detail, too -- the writing meanders a bit and doesn't always stay on focus. But hey -- if you're an Elway fan (like me), who cares? The book is fun to read even in the places where it goes off topic. If there was such a thing as a "definitive" biography of an Elway, this would probably be it. If you're an Elway fan, get this book and enjoy it!

Editorial Review:

This is the first book on one of sport's greatest stars, a portrait of a man who has dedicated his life to becoming the greatest quarterback ever. It's the story of John Wayne in Cleats, a father of four who led his team to Super Bowl glory at age 37.

Colorful summary marred by sloppy editing of basic facts 4 out of 5 stars.

Review: Dallas Cowboys (Team Spirit)

Stewart, Mark. Dallas Cowboys (Team Spirit), Chicago: Norwood House Press. 2006 48p illus $ [...] (list) ISBN 978-1-59953-004-8

I know its hard to go into great detail in just 48 pages about a team with the storied history of the Dallas Cowboys, but it should not be too much to ask that basic facts be checked before going to print.

The problems start on the back cover, where one of the "Did you know" "facts" is listed as "The Dallas Cowboys have won more Super Bowls than any other team". As a Cowboy fan, I wish that were true, but I can just see some poor eight-year old making a bet, and losing it, on the basis of the "fact" given on the back cover. Adults, especially those fans who don't exactly care for "America's Team", will recognize the typo immediately -- but most kids (the target audience for this book) believe everything they read in a book is fact.

Another problem, albeit much less significant: on page 6, author Stewart says the Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL in 1960, the same year as the Cowboys and the eight teams of the AFL. Of course, the Vikings joined the NFL in 1961. Another more significant error (and ironically was in the news last year): the URL for the Dallas Cowboys is not correct. The team could have had "cowboys.com" but reneged on a winning auction for the domain name when they claimed they thought they were bidding in dollars rather than thousands! The actual URL is [...]

Since the author is from New York and grew up as a fan of the Giants and Jets, I can understand him not knowing the history of the Cowboys as well as a Cowboy fan would, but his editors at Norwood House should have been more diligent. And even though HOF staffer Jason Aikens is listed as a content consultant, its clear his forte is football cards, not NFL history.

On the plus side, the book does a good job, in very limited space, of covering the high-lights of the team's history in the 60s, 70s and 90s. The 80s get no mention, nor are the two losses to the Packers in the 60s mentioned. The titanic struggles between the Cowboys and 49ers in the 70s, 80s and 90s are overlooked, as was the rivalry with the Redskins, although mention is made of the two losses to the Steelers and subsequent revenge in SB 30.

I like the use of classic football cards to identify players (I don't know if this is a feature of each book in the series or just this one). Finally, I notice the book was reissued in 2007 Dallas Cowboys (Team Spirit) (this review covers the library edition released in 2006). I haven't seen the 2007 edition, so I don't know if these errors have been corrected -- but I hope so.

Still, this book is a worthy addition to the library of any young Cowboy fan (as long as mom or dad are around to correct the errors).

Editorial Review:

One of the NFL's most watched teams for years, The Dallas Cowboys have a tradition of winning that includes 8 trips to the Super Bowl in 25 years. Recounts the game in 1975 when Roger Staubach threw the first Hail Mary pass and why he did it. Includes information on key personalities such as Emmitt Smith, Don Meredith, Troy Aikman, and the Dallas Cheerleaders. This book is part of the Team Spirit series.

Thomas Owens' Football Stadiums will delight any football fan and will reach beyond its intended advanced elementary-grade level into adult readers, surveying the building of stadiums and the underlying influences on their locations and operations. While the subject may not lend to classroom study, leisure readers with a passion for the sport will find this compelling, packed with detail.

Off the field, Favre lends his fame to the Brett Favre Forward Foundation, which helps disadvantaged youth in Wisconsin and Mississippi. An incredible quarterback with remarkable toughness, he will forever stand as an icon to the "cheeseheads" in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This striking new biography explores the life and career of this popular quarterback, with detailed background information on Favre's childhood, influences, and path to the pros.
