Good for 4 or 5 year olds. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was very disappointed when I first looked at this book. It is very basic and hardly seems to provide enough information to be worthwhile. But when I read it to my four year old it solicited a string of questions. So it probably has the about the right amount of information for a very basic introduction to soccer, which is all the intended audience is ready for. Overall I would recommend it.

Great for four year olds! 5 out of 5 stars.

My two love this book. It breaks the principles of the game into simplistic steps and basic explanations which are perfect for preschoolers. The bold pictures make the book enjoyable for the boys to "read" to themselves sometimes, too.

Editorial Review:

Soccer is fun - let's play!

Find all the basics in this lively guide.

  • The markings on a soccer field
  • What soccer players wear
  • The positions, from forward to goalkeeper
  • The excitement of pasing a ball
  • The thrill of making a goal

All these and more are included, with a useful glossary at the end.

My 5 year old son got this book for Christmas and we have read it every night since! It depicts the struggle for a young Turtle, Franklin, as he wants to learn to ride a two wheeler like his friends, the peer pressure involved and his overcoming his fears to finally accomplish his goal. Excellent story!

Everyone Struggles Trying to Learn Something New 5 out of 5 stars.

We really enjoyed this Franklin book. It shows kids that 1)never give up and 2)everybody struggles trying to learn something new. Franklin thinks his friends will make fun of him since he still has his training wheels on his bike. Franklin then remembers that his friends all had trouble learning new things as well. Franklin then devises an interesting way to learn to ride his bike. Its precious.

Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

In this Franklin Classic Storybook, Franklin is determined to ride his bike without training wheels, and he can't understand why it seems so easy for his friends -- or why it's so hard for him.

Great for a travel story 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book on cassette for my 21/2 yr old son to listen to on the airplane, since it was about a vacation. He watches Clifford every day and loves the book. Although, I don't like the part about Emily Elizabeth playing with bear cubs and the mama bear comes along and Clifford saves the day and they are all friends. I think they could have written something different.

hopeful 3 out of 5 stars.

this book is hopeful because of the fact that he wanted to make sure everything was alright and so he traveled just to do so and they all thanked him in the end of his journey because he saved his owner.

For Clifford fans a must 5 out of 5 stars.

Clifford is such a hero. Having watched more episodes than I like to admit, the Big Red Dog and Emily Elizabeth show what true friendship means. My children love the accompanying audio, which is especially great for expat families or those who do not have immediate access to PBS. Clifford saves the day again in this short book about a family trip that ends up short of disaster, thanks to Clifford!

Editorial Review:

Summer vacation means one thing—more time for Emily Elizabeth to play with Clifford! Until this summer, that is. Emily Elizabeth’s family is going far away, so far that Clifford can’t come. Or can he? Follow along as Clifford sniffs, swims, and tiptoes to fi nd Emily Elizabeth—just in the nick of time!

Million Dollar Shot: Review

My lit circle book, The Million Dollar Shot is a really good book so far. Eddie Ball and his Mom been dreaming of moving out of their trailer where they live but she lost her job at Finkle Foods. It's a good book because it describes a boy that's playing basketball and he enters a contest. The part I don't like is when Eddie says he'll make the shot at the end of the book. It would have been better if he left us hanging at the part when he shot it at Madison Square Garden, when it rolled around and around the hoop, wondering if it'll go in or not! Now, that would be suspenseful!!!!!!! If I had to rate it, I'd give it 3.5 stars. I would give it that because it's kind of a good book. But it is kind of boring if you read it for a second time!

Eddie Ball has the chance of a lifetime: to win a million dollars by sinking a foul shot—during halftime at the NBA finals, no less! A million dollars would mean the end to his and his mother’s problems. But someone really wants Eddie to shoot an air ball on the big day, and will do anything to sabotage the million dollar shot…

Great Book!! 4 out of 5 stars.

This story is about a teenager named Alfred Brooks, and in the book he is simply trying to make a life for himself. He dropped out of High School, and he's working at a grocery store. To make things even worse, his friend is turning to drugs and he is getting harassed by a group of guys. Alfred decides to go to Donatelli's gym, because he wants to become a champion, a boxer.

My english class read this book, and I enjoyed it. I think you should read the book, and maybe it'll make you think about reaching the goals of becoming a champion.

Editorial Review:

Before you can be a champion,
you have to be a contender.

Alfred Brooks is scared. He's a highschool dropout and his grocery store job is leading nowhere. His best friend is sinking further and further into drug addiction. Some street kids are after him for something he didn't even do. So Alfred begins going to Donatelli's Gym, a boxing club in Harlem that has trained champions. There he learns it's the effort, not the win, that makes the man -- that last desperate struggle to get back on your feet when you thought you were down for the count.

Best Book Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Five Ancestors: Snake (Book 3)

The Five ancestors is the BEST book I have ever read in my entire life. Written by Jeff Stone, The Five Ancestors is about 5 young brother warriors taught in different styles of Kung-Fu: Monkey(Malao), Snake(Seh), Tiger(Fu), Crane(Hok), and Dragon(Long). They all lived in a temple and learned new techniques and moves daily. There was a 6th brother named Ying, but he left the temple angrily because of a fight with the grandmaster. The grandmaster is the master of the temple, and he takes care of the young boys. Years after Yings departure, he returns with an army of soldiers to destroy the temple.
The temple warriors are severely outnumbered, and they fight to the death. Grandmaster saves the boys by putting them into a large crate until the battle is over and then the boys flee. Some say they are the "chosen ones" because they were the only ones to survive the battle. The boys split up and flee in different paths and were supposed to find there true destiny.
The Five Ancestors: Snake, combines an EXCELLENT story, with battles that are so realistic that they leave the reader waiting for more. The action in The Five Ancestors keeps you interested without making you go "yeah right!"
In conclusion, The Five Ancestors: Snake is The Best book in the world. The combined story with action and suspense is a true masterpiece. I would give this book a 15 out of 10 because of how good it is. The entire series is a great and stunning one to leave you waiting for the next book.

Editorial Review:

Charming Addition to Mr. Hoff's Danny & the Dinosaur Series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Danny's big Jurassaic age pal is back for another adventure. Danny returns to the museum and takes his friend the dinosaur to summer camp where they experience a typical day in the life of a camper. Mr. Hoff's has hit his mark again. Danny and the dinosaur go to camp offers a clear and simple presentation of the kinds of values we should all strive for. The dinosaur potentially a creature of fear, is gentle, noble and considerate. Values such as acceptance of those unlike ourselves, sharing, participation and friendship are expressed with simple eloquence in both word and illustration. While meant for early readers, the story is engaging for all ages.

This book may also help allay the fear of detachment experienced by many children prior to attending their first summer in camp.

Editorial Review:

Danny's going to camp––and he's taking the dinosaur! First introduced in 1958 with Danny and the Dinosaur and the recent stars of Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur, this popular pair is together again in an adventure sure to please beginning readers and happy campers alike.

Perfect for those who need it 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a librarian who loves the vast variety of humankind. I love knowing that when I walk down the street I could easily be walking past the greatest parachutist or professional kite flyer in the world, and I would never know. The hobbies and talents of the people of this world takes my breath away. Which makes reviewing a title like, "A Good Day's Fishing" an incredibly complex arrangement. First of all, I have never fished. Not a day of my life. This isn't because I dislike fishing or find it disgusting in some way. I've just never been a situation where someone handed me a pole and a tackle box and said, "Let's catch a few" (or words to that extent). Like many people I've flipped past fishing shows on PBS on cloudy Sunday afternoons and idly wondered who watches that stuff. But I have every respect for the people who enjoy the sport. Author James Prosek enjoys the sport. He enjoys it so much that he's written and illustrated multiple texts on trout, fly fishing, and other such topics. He's sort of the author/illustrator prodigy of the fish world. And now, at the grand old age of 29, he's switched his focus to children's books. No matter how big an author, no matter what their specialty, sooner or later everyone tries to write a book for kids. And that's where I come in. Looking "A Good Day's Fishing" over, I was baffled. As I've mentioned, I'm not exactly experienced in the hobby. I mean, I really enjoyed the recent children's book by Cynthia DeFelice, "The Missing Manatee", that outlines fishing in great exciting detail. But a picture book that simply catalogues the things you need to catch yourself a crappie or a pumpkinseed sunfish.... let's just say that there's a very specific type of child that's going to find this book enthralling.

Now the book follows a kid as he goes through his tackle box and tells the reader that, "what I need for a good day's fishing is in here somewhere!". We look at various lures and the fish each one is adept at catching. There are spinners for yellow perch and bobbers and sinkers to catch carp. We see extra line and a wide range of hooks (which, the hero notes, are cool) alongside forgotten maggoty sandwiches (my favorite part, actually) and a stray eel. There are rods and plugs and flies and lures. And finally, "my hat", which ends the text. We are then treated to a large lure and fly glossary that tells you absolutely every last little thing you ever needed to know about the equipment listed in the book.

This kind of book is so specialized that I cannot really recommend it to anyone who ISN'T downright fascinated by fishing. But if your child leaps at the chance of standing alongside large bodies of water with their own little tacklebox, then I can think of no book better than this one. Admittedly, I'm a little baffled as to why this book got on the New York Public Library's 2004 100 Books to Remember list. It's too specific to please a great many people (and frankly, if you're not a fisherperson yourself, the glossary reads like stereo instructions). But Prosek's put his heart into it, and it shows. Wielding his watercolor brush with great panache he's as adept at drawing the tiniest little white maggot as he is a largemouth bass gunning for a plug. This is a lovely book to look at. And detailed out the wazoo.

So if you like fishing and want your kids to like it (or they already do) then this is the perfect picture book for them. If you've merely a mild interest in the sport, however, avoid this book at all costs. For those that need it, nothing else will do. For those that don't, there are other fishies in the sea.

Editorial Review:

What I need for a good day's fishing is in here somewhere....

What's the secret to a good day's fishing?

Bright sun.

Cool breeze.

Favorite rod and reel.

Tackle box with bobbers,

hooks, and sinkers.

But we haven't gotten

to the secret...yet.

James Prosek, best-selling author of Trout and Fly-Fishing the 41st,tells the story of a good day's fishing in this beautiful picture book, illustrated with the author's own gentle watercolors. For those who want to learn more about how to fish, there's a comprehensive glossary of lures and flies in the back of the book. A Good Day's Fishing will make a fisherman or fisherwoman out of anyone -- even a first-timer.

A great little read :-) 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I reviewed Game Day earlier in the year after buying it for my nephew and both he and I (yes I admit it) loved it. Full of great pictures and a nice message, this is similar to Game Day in that respect.
Both Tiki and Ronde have written this together (it's also going to be their last book in this series). It's about learning how to be a team, which these days (after seeing kids and parents brawl) is an important message. It's also about perserverance, and learning to rely on family. They base their stories loosely around their own childhood experiences growing up playing ball so the story is sincere. Now that they each play for the NFL (Tampa Bay and the Giants), these brothers are hero's to little kids and so their words are more inspiring and meaningful. That's a big appeal in their books.
In Teammates, they are teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings and when Tiki is upset over the way he plays a game, his coach inspires him to believe in himself. So with the help of his brother Ronde, they secretly practice each morning before school to help give Tiki's game a lift and help him hold onto the ball.
It's well written and the pictures are as good as always. It is inspirational to kids and they make it enjoyable. I really think all kids will love it and find lessons in here, and it will make an excellent birthday gift to a little one be it boy or girl.

Editorial Review:

Tiki and Ronde are brothers, best friends, and teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings football team. It's the last preseason game against their arch-rival Knights -- and the football is suddenly knocked out of Tiki's grip. What gives, he thinks, I've always carried the ball this way before.

Inspired by Coach Mike, who tells Tiki, "You've gotta believe," Tiki begins secret practice sessions with Ronde in the morning on the way to school. Will it make a difference in the next big game against the Knights?

Based on the childhoods of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, this story of determination and of confidence will inspire all who read it.
