Cute book for hockey lovers-to-be 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This board book goes through the entire alphabet, giving each letter it's own page and it's own hockey term or reference. The terms touch on the game of hockey itself and the history of the sport. However, I was a little disappointed in a few of the references.
There are some that are so old, obscure, or nonsensical that parents may not even know what it means or who the person is (e.g. "Y is for two glorious Canadian Years-- the Summit Series and the Salt Lake Games"; huh?) More than a few are just plain unimaginative. And there are plenty of terms I would like to have seen in the book but didn't. There's no Playoffs, no Faceoff, no Net. It refers to the Stanley Cup as "Lord Stanley's Cup" (putting it under the letter L) which is technically correct but isn't how it's really referred to.
Also, the writing is iffy at best. Nothing rhymes or has any sort of rhythm whatsoever, and at times really isn't even grammatically structured very well.
Overall, though, even though it doesn't sound like it, I do like the book. Most of my dislikes are nitpicky. It's a cute book, especially for the hockey fan who wants to get their kid into it the sport as well. It's a fun and educational read.

Editorial Review:

"Z is for Zamboni" is an alphabet book for hockey fans young and old across America. Matt Napier's "breakaway" rhymes and "hard-checking" expository text team up with the "top-shelf" illustrations of Melanie Rose to elucidate this increasingly popular game for every beginning hockey aficionado. Highlighting rules, players, coaches, teams, and the history of the game, it is both fun and educational.

This is a wonderful book for your little hockey star. Filled with beautiful vibrant pictures and following an excellent story, this is a must have for your kid.

Editorial Review:

Nearly all kids who learn to play hockey dream of becoming a hockey star. In this book, Kimberly Jo Simac shows beginning hockey players that this dream can become a reality. Beautifully illustrated, this book introduces budding young hockey players to the sport's team spirit, challenges and rewards.

Through this rhythmic story, youngsters will learn that hockey is a life-long journey that requires committment and dedication. They also will discover that for team players who learn to accept defeat and graciously claim victory, the rewards are great.

Hockey is a great sport that encourages families to spend time together. It leaves an indelible stamp on the lives of all dedicated players. It allows hockey stars to shine, not only on the ice, but also in many other arenas of life.

When I Grow Up I'm Going To Be A Hockey Star is a book for all who love to skate or who dream of it.

Good to go with Z is for Zamboni 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good follow up to Z is fo Zamboni. It has numbers rather than letters, and the two would make a great gift together. As a stand alone book it is not as good as the Zamboni book though.

Hat Tricks Count: A very cute book for anyone connected to hockey. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This picture book is darling, and holds the interest of the adult reading it to a child. If you have any connection to hockey,or Canada you will love this book which is beuatifully written and illustrated by two Canadians, Matt Napier and Melanie Rose.

Editorial Review:

The companion volume to our bestselling, Blue Spruce Award winner, Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet. Like our alphabet series our counting books are written in a two-tier format with charming poems for young readers and expository text for older readers. Young sports fans see numbers everywhere - the scoreboard, the retired jerseys in the rafters, the numerology of sports stats - and Hat Tricks Count: A Hockey Number Book delivers them faster than an assist from the Great One, number 99 himself. Hat Tricks Count will answer many of the fast paced questions kids have. What is a Hat Trick, anyway? Cross checking, high sticking, and hooking penalties add up to what? Who scored more career goals - Gordie Howe or Wayne Gretzky?

Editorial Review:

Joey loves walking to his hockey games with his dad. Often they talk about their favorite player, Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr. One day, Joey has an accident on the ice and ends up in the hospital with a broken leg. During his stay, Joey thrills to the Bruins’ run for the playoffs and––miraculously––gets a visit from none other than Bobby Orr himself! Orr tells him about all the injuries he’s had, shares advice on the game of hockey, and even gives Joey one of his sticks. When Joey leaves the hospital he gets to watch his hero win the 1972 Stanley Cup at Boston Garden. Based on a true story from the life of hockey legend Bobby Orr, this book relays an important message about getting over hurdles and setbacks.

Editorial Review:

Keltie Thomas introduces young readers to the wild side of professional hockey, past and present, in this entertaining and informative book. Illustrated with photographs and humorous drawings, Inside Hockey! recounts the facts, adventures, and rare anecdotes that continue to make hockey one of North America’s most popular sports. It's all here — the stories about the superstars (male and female), the rules that changed the game, and the dazzling science behind the sport. Thomas profiles such unforgettable characters as the player who would rather fight than score, a goalie who sewed an elastic mesh net between his legs to catch the puck, and the guy who talked to the goalposts like they were old friends. Special categories include Legends on Ice, Strange but True, and Science at Play. This is the perfect trivia contest book, too, with the stories behind the greatest goal scorers, crazy goalies, practical jokers and hijinks, superstitions, the most ferocious fights, players overcoming obstacles, and the enduring obsession with that Cup called Stanley.

Great Intro to Hockey 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Stacy Wilson has written a great introduction to hockey for girls of all ages. She reviews the basics including positioning, terminology and equipment needs. More importantly, she introduces the young reader to role models in women's hockey with profiles on past and current international stars. The book is laid out in a manner which makes it enjoyable for both kids and adults to read. I recommend this book for all young female athletes, but especially for those with an interest in hockey.

Editorial Review:

Packed with expert advice from one of the top women's hockey players in the world, this title in the Books for Girls series will show kids how to pass and shoot like a star, choose the right equipment and help lead their team to victory. They'll also spend a day with a top women's team, find out what an Olympic hockey coach looks for in a player and discover what's ahead for women's hockey. The Hockey Book for Girls is a unique resource for girls who love to play hockey or would like to learn the game.

No book covers the game of hockey as clearly and entertainingly. The book is organized in question and answer format which makes it easy to understand and to quickly reference any fact "on the fly". Kids' Book of Hockey is definitely not just for kids - I've been a hockey fan for over 10 years and am amazed at how much this book has taught me. Thanks to this book, I now (finally) know everything that's going on when I watch a game.

For young fans aged six to 16, this book answers virtually any question they may have about the game. Chapters cover the basics, history of the game, rules (from offside to face-offs), penalties, officials, scoring, equipment, players, strategy, and much more. There is also a handy appendix of hockey terms and their easy-to-understand meanings.
