Useless and Hard to Read 1 out of 5 stars.

Being a player of AOE III, and having purchased the excellent guide by Sybex, I was expecting the same quality, but no such luck.

This guide is almost useless. It doesn't offer the detail to the different civs and does not give enough detail on stats for the different military units.

It spends too much time addressing the campaign, which frankly is one of the lamest aspects of the expansion.

Don't waste your money.

Excellent!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is not only a nice expansion, but also removes quite a few bugs in the original edition.

Good for the scenarios, looks limited otherwise 3 out of 5 stars.

I glanced through this book several times at the local bookstores since it was the only one I was able to find of the first three coming out. After reading the reviews for the Microsoft book, I think this one suffers the same problem: it's geared towards the scenarios and not the real point of the game (in my opinion) which is its great multiplayer play. There is, as I recall, one chapter that deals mainly with multiplayer play. It looked like an OK chapter, but it's still just one chapter. I want a whole book on multiplayer strategy.

I suggest you trot down to the local bookstore before you commit to purchasing this one, because if you're into the online game, it's probably not what you want. If you're just getting started or intend to focus on the 1-player game, then this book is probably decent.

Editorial Review:

Age of Empires comes from the co-designer of the best-selling game Civilization, and this book is written by the author of Sybex's top-selling books about Civilization and Civilization II. Author Jason Rich concentrates on one scenario, the Egyptian, throughout the book and shows how the strategies that work for Egypt apply to all the other scenarios in the game. Extensive coverage is also given to multiplayer gaming and teaching gamers how to design their own scenarios with Age of Empires.

Great Stuff for Aspiring Scenario Designers! 5 out of 5 stars.

It is exceptionally difficult to find a book that actually helps to crack open the mystery behind solid scenario, mission, or level design. This book actually helps guide the reader - novice or adept - through the steps necessary to develop solid, enjoyable scenarios. Whether or not the reader has aspirations to enter the game industry, this book will help to generate an understanding both what makes a game fun and how to create entertaining game experiences. Note that this guide is specific to the game AOE2: The Age of Kings. The general design tips and tricks, however, can be applied to level/mission/scenario design for any game.

If you are interested, buy it. 4 out of 5 stars.

If you like creating scenarios and campaigns I recommend you this book. (You know, to have the same effects as the campaigns, for example make scenarios like the first Genghis Khan level.

Worthy of an Emperor. . .almost. . . 3 out of 5 stars.

Very helpful and easy to read. The CD-ROM has many helpful utilites and ideas. There are some drawbacks: No Index made searching for topics difficult. The AI section could have explained the different actions and conditions in sighlty more detail. Color pictures would have been nice.

Great for starting out... 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This strategy guide is mostly filled with detailed, well-written explanations helping you to beat each scenario in the campaigns. It does very well on that, but there are few general playing/multiplaying tips, and scant descriptions of units and buildings.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft's exciting new Age of Empires is an epic game spanning eons, in which the player is the guiding spirit in the evolution of a small Ice Age tribe. Starting with virtually nothing, the player is challenged to build the tribe into a great civilization. Players can conquer or cooperate with existing tribes in a multiplayer environment. They can choose to battle on land or sea, or they can establish peaceful relations and trade resources. With AGE OF EMPIRES: INSIDE MOVES as a guide, players are armed with strategies and secrets-some straight from the developers and not available elsewhere-that give them a winning edge. The Inside Moves series editor is Robert Lock, an authority in the PC Gaming world and the founder of Compute! Books and the Game Player's family of publications.
