Awesome game! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I thought that this game was great. I was at first a little worried that I would not be able to get the controls figured out, but I did and that was not hard at all. I just love the game cause it had a great story line and sometimes I just need to remove stress and so it is fun just to shoot around.

DO NOT BUY THIS 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This guide depends on the Final Fantasy IX online site to function. THIS SITE HAS BEEN TAKEN DOWN. THIS BOOK IS NOW NON-FUNCTIONAL. DO NOT BUY.

A complete rip-off, but not utterly useless 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For an "official strategy guide", this book is very short on strategy.

Apparently, the idea with this book was to make it more interactive. It frequently points you to an official Square company website and has you use keywords to find the information you need. "For more strategies against this boss, or to find a special treasure in that room, go to the site and input such-and-such keyword!" Interesting idea in theory. Very bad in practice.

First of all, how many people have the time to leap up to their computers in the middle of the game and hit a website? It can be done, but that is so annoying. The point of having a dead-tree guide is to have the info at your finger tips when you need it. But a huge chunk of the info can't be found in the book. Useless.

And just to add insult to injury, the website is barely functional. If you actually do go there and input a keyword from the guide, there's a good chance that you'll get back an error message telling you the page you want doesn't exist. Gee, how wonderful that the main feature of this interactive strategy guide **frequently doesn't work**. Of course, you may be spared the annoyance of the website not working, because instead you'll suffer from the annoyance of not even being able to find it. While it is still up, it is no longer at the playonline URL included in the book and is not easy to find.

Now, the actual book-portion of the guide does have some good info that you don't have to coerce the website into giving up. For instance, in the book there are tables of all the learnable abilities, organized by which characters can learn them, complete with which items the character can learn them from. That is quite handy if, for some reason, you're hunting down a specific ability for a specific character. There is also an appendix of info about the monsters. This beastiary really is quite complete and, from what I've been able to see, quite accurate. Though, again, a fair amount of info about each monster has been redacted from the book and can only be found on the website.

But the lion's share of the book (the walk through, side-quest info, and treasure hunting) is abysmally lacking. So no, this guide isn't completely useless, but it is mostly useless. Don't waste your money on this rip-off. Web-surf to a Final Fantasy IX fan site or to Gamefaqs instead. It's free and their strategy guides are much more informative.

Pros:

+ Good info on abilities and monsters.

Cons:

- No info on pretty much everything else.
- Partner website is hard to find and almost non-functional.
- Complete waste of money.

Outdated, and polluted with bad editorial and misinformation 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Final Fantasy XI is an MMORPG's with a developer actively supporting it as well as a dedicated user base creatively finding new ways of putting play mechanisms in more and more clever uses. It's a living environment, which no book can ever come close to detailing, and no book can present you with anything better than an incomplete snapshot in time, forever left behind by all the regular game mechanism tweaks and new item additions.

That said, this guide is especially bad, even for a book. Lacking newer items and information on the different updates aside, it has a very misleading section on the different jobs ("classes") and their uses in game. It also fails at helping readers understand the dynamics of grouping ("partying") for gaining experience points and levels, and does not provide any realistic strategy to level crafting for beginners.

For a real guide on how to play the game, the best way is to just play it--and ask for advice from players in the game. Join a "Linkshell" (often called "guild" in other MMORPG's), and hang out with new friends. There is no better or more fun way to learn about the world of FFXI.

For information on various items, quests, missions, crafting, etc., look toward the Web. You can find just about any information you need out there; here's a short list of good sites to start with:

ffxi.somepage.com
ffxi.allakhazam.com
mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.jp/ffxi/us/
wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/index.php/Main_Page

So, skip this book--it'll just put wrong ideas into your head, which you'll have to unlearn. Play the game to understand it, and use the Web as your reference book instead.

(BTW, ignore all the pretty "buy gils now" advertisement on the web pages--buying virtual currencies is rather frowned upon by many players.)

Should Have Shipped With The Game. . . 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This guide is nothing more than a decent instruction manual for FFXI. The idea was good and if you started playing the game, let's say, back when it was first released in Japan, this so-called guide may have been helpful. But times change and so do MMORPG's. Don't get this guide unless you have a time machine so you can go back to when it would have been useful.

Editorial Review:

BradyGames' FINAL FANTASY XI Official Strategy Guide provides incredible character strategy featuring coverage of races, standard and advanced jobs, attributes, abilities, macros and more. The detailed quest and mission lists are arranged by city and incorporate the character giving the quest, requirements, items needed, rewards, and maps for specific quests-everything gamers need to finish each task! The guide also provides a variety of aids to help players master their environment, including comprehensive weapons, armor, and accessory tables, an in-depth bestiary, spell lists, a skillchain chart and more. And for those gamers wishing to follow the path of a crafter, the guide gives guild-specific information for each trade.

I don't know what you fools are talking about... 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 15 people found this review helpful.

...because I think that the strategy guide is quite useful. You would have to be a buffoon to need actual STRATEGIES to win the battles - this is not the intended purpose. However, knowing that the marquis has an entire complement of Genji armor, which otherwise cannot be found, makes the gaming experience much more enjoyable. Also, knowing WHERE to find Cloud's materia blade, without which he cannot perform any special attacks, is quite nice. I guess I COULD complain that Square put these things into the game in order to get us to buy strategy guides, but hey, that's not a complaint against the GUIDE, right?
All in all, I found the guide useful, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get everything possible out of the game. However, if you need the guide simply to get through the battles, well, maybe you should switch to another game, like Candy Land.

Better Than The Alternative 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

PlayOnline was a service created by Square to give hints to players. It was designed originally for Final Fantasy X, but was first used for IX. Unfortunately, this means that the strategy guides frequently refer the reader to PlayOnline using keywords. While this was merely annoying at the time, PlayOnline as it once was ceased to exist long ago. This renders the Brady guide more or less useless because of its particularly frequent use of the service. The Piggyback version features fewer "keywords", and some of the information referred to in PlayOnline keyword boxes is covered elsewhere in the book. This strategy guide covers everything it should: sidequests, items, and all, but some of the sidequest rewards can only be viewed on PlayOnline. The PlayOnline boxes are still distracting, but all of the bases are covered, and the guide is actually useful.

Very helpful! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was VERY impressed with this guide when I bought it the other day and I have to say that it's helped me cover alot of material. I had already beaten FF1, but FF2 was probably the hardest for me to complete alone and I'm sure that this is the same for everone else who's played it as it is said to be the HARDEST one in the FF franchise! Without it, I probably wouldn't have gotten as far as I thought. The guide covers both games and includes info on magic, dungeons, Boss strategies etc. and just about anything else you'd expect to know from a Final Fantasy game. And well, thanks to an excellent walkthrough through FF2, I finally beat both games with just about everything covered. (except for 'Normal' mode in FF1)

OVERALL: I give it a 10/10! Excellent coverage for both games and a nice way to get through the hardest dungeons in case you get lost. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are having trouble getting through either game because it will REALLY REALLY help! Never have I seen strategy this good in a long time! BRADYGAMES is the BEST co. to offer these, so I say BUY TODAY!!! You won't regret it! ^_^

Wonderful Art of Final Fantasy IX!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book, I expected mostly black and white photos and small screenshots from the game, but when I opened it up I was happily suprised with a book full of large, colorful artwork. Being a fan of the game series itself, this book especially appealed to me, as it probably would to many other FF players. But even those who do not play the game will find them selves impressed with the tons of fantastic artwork that fills its pages. I definitely recommened this book if you are a fan of the game or just love great art!

Editorial Review:

BradyGames The Art of FINAL FANTASY IX features an inside look at the stunning art from FINAL FANTASY IX. The book includes rarely-seen concept art and detailed pencil sketches, an immense collection of character art, airship and vehicle designs, monsters and unique weapon images, and full-page scenes from the most beautiful cinemas in video game history. Entertaining and informative commentary is provided as well as anecdotal captions relevant to story and events of FINAL FANTASY IX.

rather poor if you ask me 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

this guide is definatley one of the worse guides i have ever used. I foud items that weren't listed at the begining of each section mislabled items, a couple of their boss sugestions were poorly done, in the final fight it claims Zeromus is a counter atacke well he's not onc you hit him he dose't stop. Directions were poorly done, secret areas were not described. Their suggested levels were too high, up until the final boss fight wher they are pretty acurate

A must have for the rpg world!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This game guide is one of the best that i have seen yet for chrono trigger...though the cover isnt very flashy it is after all what is inside that counts. With this guide you wont have to worry about getting lost in that annoying dungeon or get defeated by that darn nasty boss and have to keep reloading your game. not only that but with this guide you will be able to complete all 11 alternate endings of the game. yes it may seem like a lot of work but it is worth it everytime, trust me. rest assured this guide will bring you to the top of your game.

A little pricy, but well worth it 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

First of all, it is well worth it to buy this package if only for the artbook. It has artwork from both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, including pictures from the FMV sequences in both games and all of the dressphere costumes for Yuna, Rikku, and Paine. You get one out of three covers on the strategy guide, but a good thing about that is that all three pictures are in the artbook, so if you didn't get the character you wanted on the cover you still get to have their picture. The package also comes with a 2-sided poster. The strategy guide itself includes a guide to getting the secret perfect (complete) ending to the game, which you will not be able to get on your own. Everything you get comes packaged in a folder that has the picture of Yuna on it from the game disk. This collector's guide is a must for any final fantasy fan, it is really really pretty and the guide is very helpful for unlocking the full story of Final Fantasy X-2.

Art is gorgeous, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The art part of the book is outstanding. Beautiful. Can't say enough good things about it.

The hint book half leaves a good bit to be desired. The print it tiny. The clues are confusing. The information is incomplete. You'd be better off just using the first part (about the dress-sphere and garment grids) and the last part (about the mini-games) and forgetting the middle part.
