Very well written for new SQL user 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book helped me get my web development project well on the way. I am using PowerBuilder to build a web based application and I needed to learn SQL programming quickly for the database component. The author was easy to understand and uses lesson plans that make it easy to learn SQL at a reasonable pace. I was able to get up and running with the basics and am becoming more proficient as I implement more of the examples in the book.
I recommend this book to anyone new to SQL. I think it may be useful to experienced SQL developers also but I cannot speak for the more advanced users since I am so new.

Good book but somewhat hard to follow 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The book I think would be more effective if we knew what software is preferred. If the book was designed with SQL Server in mind then the book should have been designed for this version. I think the author should have made different versions for different DBMS, this way the book would be more effective. If the book was going to be used for all databases then they should have included the commands used for each DBMS. Otherwise why include a step by step if not all the commands are going to work. The book is however, very well written and easy easy to follow, but there are parts of the projects that become rather difficult to follow because the book doesn't include the commands for your DBMS. In addition, the book doesn't include a DBMS program nor does it suggest what is the best program to use with this book.

Rating the book from 1 to 5 I would give it a 3. The lack of 2 points is mainly because there are parts in the book that doesn't work with the DBMS. If I wasn't using SQL Server I would give it a much lower number.

Editorial Review:

Here is the foundation upon which you can build your relational database design and programming, then apply those skills to any SQL-based product. Carefully organized for beginners, you’ll learn step-by-step how to create a database, create tables, enforce data integrity, query and modify data, and implement advanced data access techniques.

Excellent coverage of content networking 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As an IT manager, I can't say enough about this book. It covers all of the issues surrounding content networking in a clear an easy to read way. I especially found the SSL and caching chapters useful since I'm in the middle of deploying solutions for both problem areas. The SSL chapter clearly explains how the protocol works and explains how it relates to real-life issues in deploying SSL accelerators.

I've also found this book useful to get my junior administrators up to speed with the technologies that they have to learn. Finding staff that is familiar with this stuff is hard but with a book like this, I can actually provide useful training material without having to develop anything of my own or spend a lot of time explaining the basics. I intend to buy copies for all of my staff.

Editorial Review:

Learn how to accelerate network-based delivery of rich applications and content. This book provides an introduction to the Content Networking market, and describes the players, the problems, and the solutions to the problems facing companies seeking to provide services via the Internet. It also covers the underlying technologies, such as HTTP and SSL.

A favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have a whole shelf of Oracle books and I can tell by the fraying the ones that I actually use regularly to solve problems.

The book is well organized and has become a nice way for me to remember Unix commands. I also used the scripts successfully and I'm quite happy with the book.

Very good for a novice Unix user 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

First, I would like to strongly disagree with one negative reviewer who claims this book contains many technical errors including the one comparing Unix and DOS commands. I have found the book contains virtually no technical errors.

If you are a ORACLE DBA who isn't too familiar with Unix or Linux, this is a very worthwhile book to read. Although it is not meant to make anyone a Unix\Linux guru, it is intended for the Oracle DBA who may lack fundamental competency in Unix\Linux.
This book provides:

1)Unix Architecture and basic Unix syntax
2)monitoring Unix (CPU, Disk, Memory)
3)Network management in Unix (weakest portion of the book)
4)Interaction between Oracle and Unix server(could have been more comprehensive)
5)Unix Admninistration for the Oracle DBA( file, task, and profile management etc).
6)Many useful Korn Shell scripts (and how to create them) for ORACLE DBAs.

If you already have medium to strong understanding of Unix\Linux, I recommend a book which is more focused on Unix\Linux to gain better mastery of the operating system.

Editorial Review:

This authorized guide from Oracle Press explains how to administer Oracle9i on all of the major UNIX platforms, including Solaris, HP-UNIX and IBM-UNIX, and Linux. Inside, you'll find proven techniques and UNIX scripts that can be used to perform dozens of UNIX-related tasks.

It's a keeper. 5 out of 5 stars.

I work for an ISP in the Upstate NY area in 2nd level Internet support. I have found this book to be a very handy and comprehensive reference on Networking technologies. We are also an ILEC and I am impressed with how well this reference covers terms or acronyms that I am unfamiliar with when dealing with this side of the business. Great job Tom! Keep up the good work.

A must have for any network professional 5 out of 5 stars.

Tom Sheldon can capture the core of a hard to read, multi-hundred page networking book in less than a couple of pages. Crystal clear definitions, well structured text and diagrams, plus excellent cross-references make his "Encyclopedia of Networking" a huge time saver for any networking professional. My IT Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

Firstly I'd like to say...Thanks Tom, for helping to keep me in a job! Up until recently I worked as a Network Administrator in Sydney and believe me, your books saved my bacon on more than a few occasions! I first received the electronic edition of the Encyclopedia of Networking whilst studying Computer Technology and e-business in Sydney. The encyclopedia was included as part of the overall course and many references were made in the college's learning guides to certain chapters when more detailed information was necessary on a particular topic. I'm currently involved in the area of Multimedia and Telecommunications and recently obtained a copy of the latest edition, The Encyclopedia of Networking and Telecommunications and am amazed at how much extra and updated information has been included. I keep the book close by at all times and find myself referring to it quite regularly. I could now honestly say that it's become my IT bible! It covers all aspects of networking, the Internet, Electronic Communication, topologies, protocols, security and various configurations in absolute and thorough detail. The encyclopedia also comes with a CD that can be loaded onto your computer as a PDF file and the search facility works brilliantly. I must say that if anyone is involved in, or wants to know anything about Networking and Telecommunications this book is an absolute must! Personally, I can't see how I could do my job without it. Thanks a million Tom! ...John Botica

Editorial Review:

Packed with over 1400 entries and over 3000 links, this is the ONLY interactive encyclopedia for the networking and telecommunications industry. Updated to include coverage of all the latest technologies including Cisco, Microsoft, Nortel Networks, 3COM, and more.

So much great information! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must for all IT professionals! It contains information relevant to most, if not all, IT careers whether you are looking for changing your career or just keeping yourself marketable. Ms. Goff includes great interviews with people in all aspects of IT. The interviews include job descriptions, the good and bad parts to a particular position, and some helpful hints and ideas (there is a great interview with the creator of the Elvis Presley/Graceland web site!). Ms Goff introduces you to many IT careers and tells you what are the related skills you need for that position. She also helps you decide if a job is right for you (I really liked reading about the different postions and learning what skills are needed in each position and what type of person is usually good in that position). She gives examples and tells how people have successfully transitioned either into IT from other fields or parlayed their position into a new position. This book has given me ideas for keeping myself up to date and how to use what I know already to advance my career or change areas and how to decide what I want to do next.

Comprehensive, thorough and (no joke) entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I can't say enough about the latest installment by this author. It's clear to me why the Passport series keeps going back to Mr. Culp, as his insight and knowledge are unequalled. Add his truly entertaining style of writing and this book is in a class of its own. When new products have come onto the market in the past, often we are forced to choose between books that read like stereo instructions and books "for Dummies," (both of which are currently being used to torture suspected Al Qaeda members). If you are looking to learn and actually enjoy the process, I highly suggest this book.

Good book for 70-294 exam 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm already a Windows 2000 MCSE. This book is a great review of Active Directory, including the differences between the 2000 and 2003 environments. I find Brian Culp's writing style very easy to read and entertaining. The humor in this book reminds me of some Dummies books that I've read. This book is much easier to read than the Mike Meyers 70-293 Network Infrastructure book by Martin C. Brown and Chris McCain. When I read the 70-293 book, I dozed off serveral times before I could finish Chapter 3. Brian Culp's book is also much easier to follow than the big boring Sybex series of books. I also think Brian Culp does a better job with the review questions at the end of each chapter. The explanations of the answers to the review questions are very helpful. Appendix C is also a great review of DNS.
