My purpose was to pass the exam and I have done it using this book but also the Osborne book by Ch. Pack.
Both of them are very good books and are complementary.

Pros:
- A lot of examples: extracts from statspack reports, screenshots of Oracle Enterprise Manager tools. It's very interesting to understand but it's no use for the exam.
- The exam-based questions are challenging.
- Nearly all you need to know can be found in this book

Cons:
- This book doesn't follow Oracle test content checklist. It's all mixed up but there is a good plan table.
- Some chapter are too much detailed, too many parameters for Oracle utilities (eg TKPROF). It's sometime difficult to see what's important to know for the exam. I only had basic questions about those tools nothing about all the options described in the book.
- They are small mistakes: CREATE_STORED_OUTLINES, USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES and USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES are stated as initialization parameters but it's not the case (check otn.oracle.com).

My advice:
- have a good understanding of Oracle views. I had between 10 and 15 questions relating to views.
- use both books to be well prepared. This exam is quite difficult.

Excellent helpdesk info, but insufficent for the A+ exam 3 out of 5 stars.

Before taking the two A+ exams, I read this book twice, was able to answer all the practice questions in the book as well as all of the 70+ questions on the CD, not to mention the 70+ flash card questions. I had everything memorized.

But, I failed the A+ Hardware exam.

This book does NOT prepare you to take the A+ exam with all of its "helpdesk scenario" questions, such as "A client calls you and says they can boot up, but no image is appearing on the screen. Some of the possible causes are..."

This book is excellent for all around knowledge of hardware and operating systems, but it's not a good choice as an exam prep. Stick with Exam Cram.

Applications software may get all the glory, but it's the hardware and operating systems that do the heavy lifting in any computer system. Technicians who have earned CompTIA's A+ certification are recognized as qualified to solve complicated hardware and OS problems and can earn a good living doing so. A+ Complete Study Guide aims to prepare you for the two exams that you have to pass in order to become A+ certified, and it does a good job of communicating facts (like the function of a printer's corona wire and the differences among different Microsoft Windows filesystems) and procedures (such as how to install Microsoft Windows 2000 and how to examine a printer queue in Microsoft Windows XP). Though author David Groth uses the published outline of exam topics as a guide, he shares lots of other wisdom, so readers put this book down ready to work, not just pass the test.

Groth's teaching style combines explanatory text--which he writes clearly--with screen shots and procedures. He also makes use of brief sidebars for factoids, and tables for such data as command-prompt commands. Lots of readers will like his inclusion of sample exam questions at the end of each chapter, which come complete with annotated answers. A companion CD-ROM includes test simulator software, as well as a (searchable) copy of the book in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. --David Wall

I just sat for this exam -- my 28th IT exam, and the second one I prepped for with a sybex book (the other being CCDA). Having seen past reviews, I decided to keep track of the amount of questions on my test that weren't covered in the book at all. There were nine, on a 40 question exam. In my opinion, that's pretty bad. Luckily I had run through a number of boson practice exams that covered the missing information. A number of practice questions on the CD focus around 'What tab will you find this on..' and interface navigation. This is silly, and I was pleased to not find these types of questions on the real exam. However, this only serves to lower my opinion of the CD. I'd probably try and find a different resource for this exam. Actually, I *did* try to, but this was a weekend project and I couldn't find anything else in stock.

Believe me, I read the book, I remember every detail in it. It's incomplete. Anyone who could give this book 5 stars is not well exposed to good IT documentation or certification efforts.

Establishing a network consultancy frequently has more to do with happenstance than with any sort of coherent business plan. People typically develop competencies, do favors here and small jobs there, and then break with the day job when they realize that the independent work is a job unto itself. Knowing this, Matthew Strebe and his contributors on From Serf to Surfer have refrained from presenting any sort of recipe for success as a consultant. Instead, Strebe has mixed tales of his personal consulting career with universal truths about freelancing. The result is a fantastic book that is both entertaining and informative, and which belongs in the backpack of every technical consultant. From Serf to Surfer absolutely nails the proper mix of hard technicalities and soft business skills as they apply to freelance computer and network consultants.

The personal anecdotes are by far the best, since Strebe writes with a hilariously dry style, revealing the silliness that underlies every consultant's business worries. "A combination of sunlight and anxiety woke me up," Strebe writes in an account of a typical consulting day. But there's a lot more to this book than the author's excellent insights into life, taxes, and the customer's psyche. You'll find explicit advice on maximizing tax deductions on business vehicles (buy a dedicated business vehicle), keeping your cool in the face of idiotic clients ("call your mom and resolve all your outstanding childhood issues"), and getting set up with the equipment you'll need (there's a list, complete with makes and models). Read this one, particularly if you're already a successful consultant and think you know it all. --David Wall

Topics covered: Freelance consultancy in the computer networks field. In addition to loads of hilarious and salient stories from the primary author's career, this book contains a great deal of information on such business technicalities as project management, marketing, contract negotiation, client relations, accounting, taxes, and so on. The tax and legal stuff is U.S.-focused, but consultants everywhere will appreciate what Strebe has to say.
