A good introductive read to NT 4.0 3 out of 5 stars.

New Riders books seem to be great for introducing concepts, not studying for them. Although I used this book (and Exam Cram and Transcenders), it was my experience as a network administrator that got me through the NT Server 4.0 exam this afternoon. The numerous spelling mistakes were annoying. The NT Server 4.0 exam dwells a great deal on RAS, and this book simply does not have the necessary information you need to pass. This said, I don't think much of the SYBEX books at all. They're wishy-washy and not for serious MCSE studying. In fact, my company has withdrawn them from their reference library for this very reason. My advice? Read a few books, use the Exam Cram, take lots of practice tests (Transcender are STILL the best)and if you know your stuff, the NT Server 4.0 exam should be no problem for you. Some people are better at exams than others (I hate them), but I got through with 4 seconds to spare. Sure, read this book, but make SURE you read others as well.

Prepare well, and you'll pass.

Editorial Review:

Because it requires familiarity with so many technologies and their relationships, the Windows NT Server 4 in the Enterprise exam (70-068) has the reputation of being the toughest of the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) exams. If you're studying for this monster, you deserve to have Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise Accelerated MCSE Study Guide at your fingertips. This book is among the clearest and most thorough MCSE review books on the market.

All of Microsoft's stated exam objectives are covered here. Starting with Windows NT installation and progressing through the optimization and expansion of networks, the authors--all MCSEs--explain how to make Microsoft networking technologies do your bidding. They explain how to administer users and network resources efficiently and securely. Then they show how to implement network-centric services. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) gets lots of attention, as do the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and the Domain Name System (DNS) under Windows NT.

Will you pass the exam after reading this book? There's more to it than that--all MCSE tests require experimentation and practice. But this book will point you in the right direction as you learn about Windows NT and its networking capabilities. Furthermore, it'll guide you out of confusing situations and serve as a reference after you pass the test. --David Wall

Editorial Review:

Popularly regarded as the toughest of the MCSE Core Four exams, the Windows NT Server 4 in the Enterprise test (70-68) requires you to integrate knowledge of NT Server with knowledge of NT Workstation, Windows 95, older operating systems, and various back-end transaction software. It's a difficult exam, and this book can help you prepare.

Much of the Enterprise exam focuses on planning and establishing an NT network, and this book follows suit. A third of the material here addresses issues of pre-installation decision making, installation, configuration, and optimization. The protocols--NetBEUI, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk--also get lots of attention, and later sections address NT security, RAID, and routing.

Another large portion of this book handles administration. The authors explore rights and policies and then shift to a discussion of increasingly important remote-administration issues. MCSE Training Guide: Windows NT Server 4 Enterprise completely documents Performance Monitor and Network Monitor, which figure prominently on the exam. The book wraps up with troubleshooting on both a macro (how to identify problems) and micro (how to fix specific common Remote Access Server [RAS] problems) level. Each chapter concludes with hands-on exercises and knowledge-testing review questions.

A companion CD-ROM will quiz you on key concepts, keeping score as you go. However, the exam's randomization feature seems weak--it's not unusual to see the same question multiple times in the same exam.
