Andrews comes through with flying colors! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

COMPTIA has started to update the A+ Exam and the new exam will be out in the first quarter of 2001. Having a book that gives you the newest objectives is certainly a plus and Jean Andrews has delivered the first book I have seen to cover the newest set of objectives.

The 1200 page book can be used as a self-study manual or in a classroom setting. Starting off with computer concepts and how software and hardware works gives the technician a great base to build on.

Andrews then covers the topics of system boards, memory, storage devices and troubleshooting the hardware side. This covers about 40% of the book. Andrews makes sure that the laser printer process and laptops get the needed coverage devoting chapters to each topic.

The networking sections are excellent and each area is covered with enough information to make sure that you can pass the exam. The software topics of Windows 9.X, NT and 2000 Professional are also given their due with excellent attention to detail.

With tables, figures, diagrams, review question, key terms, hands-on projects you have every objective covered and the best chance of getting a leg up on the rest of the IT community. The cd-rom included has a 120-day eval of Nuts and Bolts and a discount voucher is also included.

Again, Jean Andrews is leading the pack in making sure that future technicians are given every opportunity to climb the IT ladder. About the only thing left out is the software practice test, but overall this is an excellent place to start.

Editorial Review:

Written by best-selling author and instructor Jean Andrews, this edition maps fully to CompTIA's new 2006 A+ Exam objectives. This full-color guide is designed to be the most complete, step-by-step book available for learning the fundamentals of supporting and troubleshooting computer hardware and software. Video clips are available on the accompanying CD so readers can watch the author bring concepts and technical topics to life via live demonstrations.

High level presentation of rendering techniques 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is not a book of algorithms on computer graphics methods. Instead, it is a comprehensive high-level survey of rendering techniques for making the graphics appear to occur in real time. This book has a very academic tone to it, and with the exception of chapter 3 which is on matrix transforms, it has precious few implementation details. Some reviewers have called it a successor to Foley and Van Dam's classic text, but I find this misleading. That book is primarily about computer graphics techniques, and is not that concerned with real-time issues. The bibliography of this book is extensive and impressive, and if you are doing research on the subject it is probably essential, especially if you are interested in the subject of virtual reality where real-time presentation is a must. However, if you are just looking for pseudocode or more "cool effects" to insert into a game or graphics program you are writing/programming you would do best to look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Thoroughly revised, this third edition focuses on modern techniques used to generate synthetic three-dimensional images in a fraction of a second. With the advent or programmable shaders, a wide variety of new algorithms have arisen and evolved over the past few years.

This edition discusses current, practical rendering methods used in games and other applications. It also presents a solid theoretical framework and relevant mathematics for the field of interactive computer graphics, all in an approachable style.

Editorial Review:

t the heart of the universe is a steady, insistent beat, the sound of cycles in sync. Along the tidal rivers of Malaysia, thousands of fireflies congregate and flash in unison; the moon spins in perfect resonance with its orbit around the earth; our hearts depend on the synchronous firing of ten thousand pacemaker cells. While the forces that synchronize the flashing of fireflies may seem to have nothing to do with our heart cells, there is in fact a deep connection. Synchrony is a science in its infancy, and Strogatz is a pioneer in this new frontier in which mathematicians and physicists attempt to pinpoint just how spontaneous order emerges from chaos. From underground caves in Texas where a French scientist spent six months alone tracking his sleep-wake cycle, to the home of a Dutch physicist who in 1665 discovered two of his pendulum clocks swinging in perfect time, this fascinating book spans disciplines, continents, and centuries. Engagingly written for readers of books such as Chaos and The Elegant Universe, Sync is a tour-de-force of nonfiction writing.

A tool rather than a toolkit 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book delivers exactly what it says. Except that word "toolkit" in its title - you'd better think about this book being a single tool, not a whole toolkit. Ralph Kimball actually has a whole lot of books on data warehousing published, this is one of them, a tool in the toolkit. This one seems like a good starting point to the entire series, and it only shows a single facet - the dimensional modeling.

The book explains the basic principles of creating dimensions and fact tables in a data warehouse (assuming a relational star schema), and then dedicates a chapter per industry to show how those principles apply to sales, order management, CRM, accounting, human resources, financial services, telecoms, logistics, education, health care, e-commerce, insurance etc. Each one appears to be significantly different from the others.

There is a couple of teaser chapters starting with "we have that other book covering this, but will brief you out". Nice and makes you want to read the other books too.

The book also includes guidelines to the warehouse building process, in terms like "know your business sponsor", "talk to your users" and so on. Difficult to say what it has to do with dimensional modeling, perhaps it's included in all the books in the series.

There is no word on software, hardware, physical architecture, tuning or performance in this book. It is a textbook in dimensional modeling, period.

The book is written clearly, has a handful of simple and uniform diagrams and is easy to follow. It only leaves you wondering just how exactly large is the whole data warehouse area, how many pieces you need to collect yet.

Recommended.

Editorial Review:

Single most authoritative guide from the inventor of the technique.
  • Presents unique modeling techniques for e-commerce, and shows strategies for optimizing performance.
  • Companion Web site provides updates on dimensional modeling techniques, links related to sites, and source code where appropriate.

Fantastic Introduction to Computing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Technology in Action is a great book for college-level computer concepts classes. I have taught with Technology in Action at a community college for 4 years now. The book is written to engage today's students with a very useful question and answer format. I find my students are reading again since using Technology in Action!

My students also love the multimedia that comes on the CD (packaged with the text) which they describe as entertaining, informative and fun! Wow, students who think learning is fun...what a concept!

I highly recommend this text for freshman and sophomore computer concepts classes. This is a book your students will read and enjoy!

Editorial Review:

This book was designed to spark reader interest by covering practical concepts that they want to learn (such as setting up a wireless network in their home) while giving background information (such as how networks function) for those interested in exploring topics deeper. This book covers the parts of the computer, tips on using the Internet, application software, system software, networking and security, and mobile computing. For anyone who uses a computer in his or her personal or professional life.

Very informative 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I graduated from UAB in the fall of 2004. While attending school I was blessed with the opportunity work as an InfoSec Professional while utilizing Business Intelligence. In the spring semester of 2005 UAB implemented an information security course, i was given the opportunity to audit the course. We used this book in the course, at first i thought that it was over kill and boring, but at the end of the semester i realize that all the information is necessary for students to grasp the concepts of information security. One must remember that information security is still in its infancy as a profession, but it rapidly expanding. This book is great if one need an introduction to the information security profession. I currently have this book in my library, where i still use it as a reference when writing information security related papers for ACM.
