A nice, basic GIS primer with ArcGIS software included 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I teach an introductory GIS course using this book. I like the simple, informative layout and the exercises that are useful, if a little basic. One of the real values of the book is the inclusion of a trial version of ArcGIS 9.2 with a full gamut of extensions (there is a newer book out with 9.3), as well as exercises that go along with the book.

This in itself is very valuable, because it allows my students to use the state of the art software during the course on their personal computers. Unless you have access to ArcGIS from another source, I would highly recommend purchasing the book new, since the trial software is one-time use only.

Editorial Review:

With revised material and new exercises based on ArcGIS version 9, this updated work acquaints geographers and GIS professionals with the principles of GIS as it teaches the mechanics of using ArcGIS software. Conceptual material is followed by scripted software exercises. Necessary GIS skills are presented in a variety of areas--map symbology, data overlay, map projection, and data conversion--as the making of maps and the analysis of geographic data is conceptualized. Spatial modeling exercises using the Model Builder technology of ArcGIS version 9 are also provided. Other topics covered include organizing data, planning a GIS project, creating derived data, and presenting results.

Editorial Review:

Dreamweaver CS3, now included as part of Adobe's Creative Suite 3, is the leading professional Web design and development application in the market, and is a must-have tool for any Web designer or developer. Dreamweaver CS3 offers new CSS layouts, a unified CSS panel, and CSS visualization tools that let users create interactive Web sites without having to delve into code. Dreamweaver users can now create dynamic interfaces using the Spry framwork for Ajax. (Spry is 99% HTML, so it's accessible to both designers and developers). Spry widgets (pre-built user interface components) let users quickly add common user interface components to Web pages. Each chapter in this full-color book contains a project that builds upon the reader's growing knowledge of Dreamweaver, while review questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the most important skills. Readers will learn how to customize a Dreamweaver workspace, apply cascading style sheets, enter headline and body text, insert graphics and rollovers, and add links to a page. They'll also learn how to add interactive elements to their site, such as behaviors, effects, and Flash video; add new code or code snippets; and publish their finished site to the Web.

Editorial Review:

Written by Stu Maschwitz, co-founder of the Orphanage (the legendary guerrilla visual effects studio responsible for amazing and award-winning effects in such movies as Sin City, The Day After Tomorrow, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), this book is a must-have for all those budding filmmakers and students who want to produce action movies with visual effects but don't have Hollywood budgets. The Orphanage was created by three twenty-something visual effects veterans who wanted to make their own feature films and discovered they could do this by utilizing home computers, off the shelf software, and approaching things artistically. This guide details exactly how to do this: from planning and selecting the necessary cameras, software, and equipment, to creating specific special effects (including gunfire, Kung Fu fighting, car chases, dismemberment, and more) to editing and mixing sound and music. Its mantra is that the best, low-budget action moviemakers must visualize the end product first in order to reverse-engineer the least expensive way to get there. Readers will learn how to integrate visual effects into every aspect of filmmaking--before filming, during filming and with "in camera" shots, and with computers in postproduction. Throughout the book, the author makes specific references to and uses popular action movies (both low and big-budget) as detailed examples--including El Mariachi, La Femme Nikita, Die Hard, and Terminator 2. Note from the Publisher: If you have the 3rd printing of The DV Rebel’s Guide, your disc may be missing the data files that accompany the book.
