Coverage of the three contexts in which oral skills are necessary—interpersonal, group, and public speaking—the text illuminates all phases of the communication process. • Practicing Business Communication boxes profile organizations of different sizes, structures, and communication styles, offering students insight into the importance of communication skills regardless of the size/orientation of the organization.
  • Critical-thinking skills are developed through Strategic Challenges boxes, which present scenarios and situations that students are likely to encounter in the workplace.
  • Up-to-date coverage of technology is found in Technology Tools boxes, which give students practical insights on topics ranging from mediated communication/presentations to presentation managers.

Best purchase for training EVER..... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are so many "how to train" products out there and most are so academic so as not to be practical. This book is easily understandable, fun and most of all, practical. I have already incorporated most of what I've read and have seen dramatic improvement in our new employees' performance. Reading this book was as comfortable as talking with a friend over coffee, very informal and very fun! Thank you!

Editorial Review:

This book is an entertaining and practical guide for every trainer and performance improvement professional as it tackles the three universal and persistent questions of the profession--how do learners learn, why do learners learn, and how do you ensure that learning sticks. This interactive book with it fun and breezy style illustrate the authors' point of view that learning should be active and enjoyable. Playful illustrations demonstrate the solid research that back up the authors' contentions and help readers separate learning myth from fact to dispel beliefs and practices that often harm the instructional process.

Best general overview of negotiation 5 out of 5 stars.
74 of 90 people found this review helpful.

I have done my doctoral dissertation in negotiation and have read hundred of books and articles in this subject. "Essential of Negotiation" is the best general book dealing with negotiation. Great coverage of the subject. No doubt it is a great investment for practitioners and academics. You will not regret!

Hits all the high points, doesn't dumb things down. 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

"Essentials of Negotiation" is the popular market version of "Negotiation," which is a texbook. This one is more of a handbook for actual negotiators. The advantages of "Essentials" is that it is streamlined (making it a better intro for beginners or refresher for experienced negotiators) and less expensive. It still includes all the major topics you want to see: distributive bargaining, integrative bargaining, psychology of negotiations (including some communications tactics), ethics, and some int'l stuff. It also has a good index, making it a nice reference tool.

While it has lots of stories and examples to help readers remember concepts, my favorite feature of this book is that the author doesn't talk down to his audience. Lewicki uses technical jargon when it is appropriate (he also explains it). That precision has value, in my opinion. People who are completely new to a study of negotiation might prefer "Getting Past No" by Ury, which is also very good but perhaps more accessible. Those with some, even minimal, experience would be well-served by this book.

Good luck!

Editorial Review:

ESSENTIALS OF NEGOTIATION, 4e is a short paperback derivative from the main text, NEGOTIATION, 5e. It explores the major concepts and theories of the psychology of bargaining and negotiation, and the dynamics of interpersonal and inter-group conflict and its resolution. Fourteen of the 20 chapters from the main text have been included (about half have been shortened by about 1/3) for this volume. Chapters are shortened by removing more 'academic' material and some of the boxes. This effectively leaves the message and theories of negotiation intact.

Humorous Training Games 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

These games are helpful but not as "quality" as most trainers seek. Good for a springboard but not enough meat.

Well worth the money 5 out of 5 stars.

I especially like the section on Assertiveness which teaches assertiveness without fear and the section on Working with Difficult peers in the workplace. Very appropriate and hard hitting.

Great fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

I already used it with young people. And it's easy to use, has nice games, and I like the debriefing questions.

What I was looking for.

Maximum incompetence. 1 out of 5 stars.
19 of 41 people found this review helpful.

Intercultural competence! What a totally inappropriate title for a book, especially when the subject matter is; view points of different cultures. Who gets to decide who is competent and who is not? Would one become competent after they read this book? People who do not agree with the authors, are they incompetent? After the initial shock of the title, I started reading this book, in fact I had to read the whole thing since it was the text book of a class that I was taking. Unfortunately the shock intensified. They define things that are not definable and they categorize things in the most reductionist and mechanistic fashion. Not only that but they don't even use English properly. They ask a question about apples and then give an answer about oranges, not realizing that the question has really no answer and should not be asked to begin with. This book is supposed to be about different points of view but there is nothing in it that would make one understand other cultures. It is all about the extremely narrow and linear point of view of the authors. They explain the simplest concepts in the most convoluted way possible but in reality the information is extremely superficial. They basically name and categorize things and consider them understood. After a few weeks our class turned into 'lets find out how wrong the authors are' class. I must admit after that it was kind of fun. When I asked my teacher as to why she chose this book, thinking perhaps I am missing something, her answer was "because it seems to be quite popular"! So now we are reading books not because of their content but because of their popularity. What a disappointment.

Editorial Review:

Striking a unique balance between skills and theory, Intercultural Competence provides readers with the background and confidence to succeed in today's multi-cultural environment. Blending both the practical and the theoretical, the concrete and the abstract, this book is both enjoyable to read and thoroughly researched. By clearly explaining different theories and the significance of cultural patterns and having readers practice what they learn via examples in the book, Intercultural Competence better prepares readers to interact in intercultural relationships. The book also provides a discussion of important ethical and social issues relating to intercultural communication. The authors cover American multiculturalism as well as global cultural issues. For anyone interested in intercultural communication.

Talking in Circles 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is as clear as mud. I read this book to better understand alternative paradigms that are all too often missing from others on this subject. Unfortunately, the author focused more on including everyone's perspective than making any idea clear.

Waste of time and money 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a required text for one of my BSW classes and I wish I hadn't wasted my money purchasing it. The book is not constructed in a clear way, topics run together with no clear transitions, and is poorly written. The author will introduce a theory or define a term by quoting other authors' definitions. Not just one per term, but many for each new term explained. By the time you finish reading that paragraph you have multiple views on a definition, and none of them are clear. I have read over 40 college textbooks and this is by far the worst I have ever had the misfortune to read. The writing style of the author is so atrocious it appears to be a research paper gathered by a fifth-grader!

The worst text I had in my entire BSW program 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was extremely difficult to understand. Full of big complicated terms that could have been said in simply easy to understand words. If all my texts had been like this, I'd never have made it through school. Not at all appropriate for undergrad work. It's the only text I sold back, and was glad to get rid of it. A total waste of money. I had to buy another HBSE book just to figure out what this one was trying to say.

Editorial Review:

Unfortunately, we've all seen it happen. When faced with a problem, rather than working cooperatively to come up with a solution, your manager or colleagues come swooping in, squawking loudly, dump orders riddled with formulaic advice, and then take off, leaving you and everyone else to clean up the mess. Or—let's be honest: there may have been a time (or three) when you have been guilty of doing that very thing yourself.

While this happens in every workplace worldwide more frequently than ever, it doesn't have to. Through the story of Charlie, a seagull who doesn't understand how his management actions are holding back his flock, Travis Bradberry, Ph.D., reveals the three virtues of great leadership that he has used to help thousands of people and organizations deal with seagull managers in the workplace and, just as important, to avoid being one themselves.

Charlie the seagull is a well-intentioned manager who, when faced with new challenges after previously leading his flock to success, fails to understand how his management style is holding back, rather than helping, his team. Through our bird's-eye view of Charlie, overconfident Scott, quiet Maya, practical Yufan, and skinny, shy Alfred, we see them and the rest of the flock struggle to solve their problems while absorbing the three virtues of great leadership and teamwork along the way. This entertaining and illuminating fable will help make us all more productive, less prone to depositing messes on the heads of those around us, and more able to work effectively with those who continue to squawk at us every day.
