A Great Way to Teach Writing 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I started using this text in my beginning reporting and writing classes a year ago. It was a strange experience: My students actually loved a textbook! I think that because this text does a good job of getting over the touchy-feely parts of treating the writing and editing processes as coaching processes, and shows how it's actually done. My students were able to convert her perspectives into some good work during our one-semester course. I'll be using this book again for some time to come.

Editorial Review:

WRITING AND REPORTING NEWS prepares students for the changing world of journalism by emphasizing traditional basic skills while also stressing new trends in the convergence of print, broadcast and online media. With new information about blogs, multimedia writing, and other skills students will need for careers in the media, the Fifth Edition retains its emphasis on writing fundamentals and ethics in journalism, as well as the coaching method, which features tips and techniques from writing coaches and award-winning journalists. The text's strong "storytelling" approach with stories about journalists and its built-in instructional material make it accessible and easy for students to learn effective writing and reporting techniques for every news medium.

The concise length, tight focus, and emphasis on self-development are keys to this text's appeal. Written in a positive, motivational style,On Course empowers students with tools they need to take charge of their success in college and life. Downing's distinctive guided journal entries help students develop essential life skills by encouraging exploration of personal responsibility, self-motivation, interdependence, and self-esteem. Extensive coverage of study skills—reading, note taking, memorizing, and test taking—provided in the "Wise Choices in College" sections help students excel in all of their college courses.

  • New! "One Student's Story" student essays provide insight on which On Course strategies worked for them and how they applied these strategies to their life.
  • The "Choices of Successful Students" chart on the inside front cover shows eight key choices that successful students make in determining their own success. These choices are revisited at the beginning of each chapter.
  • An end-of-chapter study skills feature, "Wise Choices in College," covers reading, note taking, studying, memorizing, test taking, writing, and researching. This feature is highlighted in the Table of Contents.
  • New! An end-of-chapter applications exercise, "Embracing Change: Do one thing different this week," appears after "Wise Choices in College." This exercise lists beliefs and behaviors related to the chapter topic, and asks students to select one they would like to experiment with for one week. After the week, students can assess their results to determine if their outcomes and experiences improve.
  • "On Course Principles at Work" show how important the On Course success strategies are for choosing the right career, getting hired, and succeeding in the work world.
  • "Case Study in Critical Thinking," now moved to the beginning of every chapter, includes topics such as procrastination and collaborative work and encourage students to think critically and creatively.
  • New! Eduspace course provides students with a place to interact with the textbook by completing journal entries and technology exercises, and participating in discussion groups. Video Skillbuilders for Student Success provide supplemental materials to expand lessons in time management, note-taking, reducing test anxiety, health and wellness, and decision-making.

Communication style requires options 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

An earlier reviewer decries the liberal leanings of this text. A college introductory course introduces options in skills available for human communication. This text provides students exercises that help identify their current communication style, the answers to the questions then invite discovery and awareness. Once the reader is aware, the opportunity to examine the communication framework each individual uses and how new communication skills can be employed can begin. This text provides a wealth of information to the essential process of communication.

Editorial Review:

Essentials of Human Communication fills the need for a brief, interesting, but serious text that places a strong focus on skill development. In-text features and the text itself highlight the application of human communication skills to the real world and to the workplace. Self concept, perception, verbal and nonverbal messages, interpersonal relationships, small group communication, and public speaking preparation. Introductory human communication.

Editorial Review:

David Maister, Charles Green, and Robert Galford--consultants on professional-service management and customer-relation issues--believe nobody can become successful as a business guru until they first gain the confidence of their clients. In The Trusted Advisor, the authors effectively build their case through anecdote and illustration, then relay a solid series of relevant suggestions applicable to both would-be consultants and those already active in the field. Among their most potent suggestions is a practical, five-step development process that encourages outsiders to engage clients by focusing attention on the issues and individuals at hand; listening both to what they say and what they leave unsaid; framing the immediate problem from their perspective; envisioning with them how a solution might appear; and committing jointly to the actions and resources that will bring it about. Also particularly useful is the examination of trust-building during four phases of a client-advisor alliance: at the time the relationship is consummated; during the assignment; after the assignment; and when "cross-selling," or establishing affiliations with the customer's associates. Boosting its utility, the book is filled with concise, easily adopted tips like "return phone calls unbelievably fast" and "always tell the truth and not what the client wants to hear." --Howard Rothman

Great book on Leadership with interesting material 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I'm using this book for a graduate course. It is very readable and has lots of interesting side articles included. The many evaluations it provides provide a quick way to see new perspectives on your leadership style. It provides a broad view of leadership theories, styles, followership, culture, etc. I have taken another graduate course that uses Dr. Daft's Management book. There are many overlapping topics between the two books as expected. There is also a website associated with the book which has some good resources including PowerPoint slides. My only complaint is the price seems high for a non-hardbound book.

Editorial Review:

Packed with interesting examples and real world leadership, the 4th edition of THE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE will help you develop an understanding of theory while acquiring the necessary skills and insights to become effective leaders. Written expressly for courses teaching leadership theory and application, the text integrates recent ideas and practices with established scholarly research in a way that makes the topic of leadership come alive.

Exceptional is More Than a Word in the Title 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Whether you're a seasoned speaker, or are just starting out and need an edge in today's competitive market, this book is for you. It's like having your own professional coach at your fingertips. Both a quick read and a quick reference, the techniques are simple and easy to apply. The skills you will learn are critical to improving your communication in a group setting or one-on-one.

Prior to reading this book, I had the privilege of speaking to 1500 business professionals at a national convention that taped my presentation. I had received outstanding feedback from those running the convention and invited guests. Yesterday, I reviewed the CD and listened for verbal grafitti, pacing, tone, inflection and anything that would make the message less impactful. I found several areas where I excelled and others I could work on to make this presentation exceptional. You won't regret investing in this book. Carry it with you and use it often. I highly recommend it.
