Editorial Review:

If you are tired of struggling to make ends meet but don't know a 401(k) from Special K, this book is for you. Aimed specifically at "Generation Broke"--those in their twenties and thirties who are working yet buried in credit card debt and student loans--this user-friendly guide offers a clear introduction to practical investing and money management techniques that can turn even a dismal financial situation around. Bestselling author Suze Orman has a knack for taking the fear out of money matters, and in The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous &: Broke, she shows readers how to set priorities and achieve goals, whether it is to buy a house or save for retirement or pay for a child's education. She also offers inspiration to readers to face their financial problems and get started on a solution. After all, there is good news: young people still have the time to correct problems so that they will never be broke again. Readers who find terms such as diversification and IRA rollover scary--or worse, unimportant--will learn much from this book.

In these pages, Orman clearly and succinctly explains what a FICO score is and why it's so important, offers the lowdown on stocks and mutual funds, provides career advice, and offers lots of tips on dealing with student loan debt, saving money even when times are tight, debt consolidation strategies, and the safest way for newlyweds to merge their finances. She also offers information on credit cards, including why canceling cards is not a good idea, when it makes sense to use them, and the best strategies for paying them off. It may not be the only money book you'll ever need, but it's an excellent place to start. --Shawn Carkonen

Better than the Usual Run of Teen Self Help Books 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" series has been enormously popular on the lecture circuit and in book stores. Authors Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter have distilled a fair amount of useful financial advice using the medium of Kiyosaki's autobiographical remembrances of the lessons his two 'Dads' taught him. In brief, one father (his biological father) is a teacher who stresses education and finding a 'good' job, while his other father (actually the father of his best friend Michael) taught him how to manage money, seize opportunities, and build financial independence. Like many other self help financial books, this series has a good mix of practical advice and a fair amount of platitudes designed to give readers confidence in themselves so they will take some risks in the pursuit of their dreams.

I was expecting a slightly easier to read version of the same message from this book. My wife asked that I skim it to see if it was appropriate for her grandchild. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that this book was not just a easier to read version of the original 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad.' Instead, Kiyosaki and Lechter have moved beyond the usual boundaries of the financial self help guide to discuss multiple intelligences and (surprise) the value of education in all its forms. Of course, the best of the advice found in 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' is repeated here as well. You should buy assets, not liabilities. Debt is a tool for developing assets, not means to purchase the latest gizmo that you absolutely have to have right now. But the authors also talk extensively about Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. They correctly recognize that kids (indeed, all of us) have certain innate intelligences not all of which are developed in a traditional classroom setting. They encourage young people to develop and use their own talents and gifts in pursuit of a financial education. They rightly remind their readers that all of them are born geniuses.

In conclusion I liked this book considerably more than the original volume of the 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' series. In that volume, Kiyosaki concluded that he learned from both of his Dads, but the Rich Dad gets a far more positive portrayal. The teacher father comes up short in many ways. But in this book, education is correctly seen as one form of wealth. It is not the only form, despite what many of my colleagues in the teaching profession might say. But it is one form. A life with great books and music is also wealth. And so is financial independence. Indeed, without the latter, it is difficult to appreciate the former. And I think the authors give both forms of wealth their due in this book. That is a good message for teens to read.

Editorial Review:

The #1 New York Times bestselling authors of the blockbuster Rich Dad Poor Dad series reveal their groundbreaking financial advice to teens. This special just-for-teens edition based on Rich Dad Poor Dad builds a foundation of self-confidence from which readers can realize their dreams of financial security in an increasingly challenging and unreliable job market. Teen-friendly advice, examples, sidebars, and straight talk will supplement all of Rich Dad's core advice: Work to learn, not to earn. Don't say 'I can't afford it'-instead, say 'How can I afford it?' And, don't work for money-make money work for you! No matter how confident or 'good in school' readers consider themselves to be, RICH DAD POOR DAD FOR TEENS makes financial intelligence available to all young people with its streamlined structure, clean design, and accessible voice. Here's a book that teaches teens what they don't learn in school-and what many of their parents have yet to learn.

Editorial Review:

In a wise and witty manner, brothers David and Tom Gardner, founders of the multimedia investment company The Motley Fool, impart their investment strategies to the adolescent masses with The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens. In eight teen-friendly sections, the brothers Gardner and writing partner Selena Maranjian demystify the stock market by describing and defining mutual funds, banking practices, IRAs, and drip investing. The authors also include numerous quotes from money-savvy adolescents who detail some of their rookie market moves in an attempt to help their peers steer clear of similar mistakes. Parents will approve of the strongly worded sections on credit card debt and the costly financial and physical tolls a smoking habit takes on both wallet and health. In fact, parents would do well to pick up this investment primer for their own edification, if they find the stock market a confusing and chaotic business. Loaded with worksheets, helpful Web sites on a variety of financial subjects, a concise glossary, and a comprehensive index, this is one investment guide that both generations can and will turn to again and again.

Traditionally, teens have been known for having a hard time seeing the proverbial Big Picture. But the Gardners respond admirably to this characteristic, by constantly emphasizing the fortune teens can make in the future by investing now and reminding them that investing money is the least labor-intensive way to make more of the desirable green stuff. A perfect gift for the burgeoning Warren Buffet in your life. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Editorial Review:

In this extensively revised and expanded second edition of "Uncle Eric Talks About Personal, Career, and Financial Security", Uncle Eric introduces the concept of model. Models (or paradigms) are how people think; they are how we understand our world. Models help us recognize and use the information that is important and bypass that which is not. To achieve success in our careers, investments, and every other part of our lives, we need sound models. In this book, Mr. Maybury introduces the models he has found most useful (Economics and Higher Law). This is the first book in the Uncle Eric series and, while designed to stand alone, provides an excellent foundation for Maybury's other books. To improve the student's learning experience, also purchase the student study guide for "Uncle Eric Talks About Personal, Career, and Financial Security" titled "A Bluestocking Guide: Building a Personal Model for Success", which is also available from Amazon.com.

For more on the Economic model, read "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?" The clearest and most interesting explaination of economics around. Explains the Austrian economic model, the most free-market of all economic models, and the one that is most in agreement with the ethical principles on which America was founded.

For more on the Legal model, read "Whatever Happened to Justice?" Explains the common law model. Underlying common law are two basic rules: 1) do all that you agreed to do and 2) do not encroach on other persons or their property. Maybury says, "In my opinion, you and your family and friends will avoid a lot of trouble, and find success of every kind easier to achieve, if you adopt these two models, Austrian economics and common law."

It presents information on topics such as why money is so important in our society, how one can go about earning money, and other topics such as budgeting, debt and investing. The author provides concrete information that is beneficial for any teen who wants to become familiar with the basics of financial management. This is a religious based book 3 out of 5 stars.
42 of 60 people found this review helpful.

I think it is important to point out a fact that Amazon leaves off in their description of the book. The author, Larry Burkett, is the founder and president of Christian Financial Concepts, Inc., a ministry dedicated to teaching God's principles for financial management.

This is obviously a big selling point of the book to a great many people.

However, it is something that people just browsing for a good financial book and workbook for their teens might not realize. For some of those people, it would not be what they are looking for.

I think Amazon is doing a great disservice to not make this very clear.

Sending teens out into the world with a clear understanding of finances and financial responsibility is very important.

If a biblical bent to finances suits your beliefs and lifestyles, take a look at this book.

If this aspect does not appeal to you, you would be better off looking elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

If you don't take control of your money, someone else will. Why learn to manage your money? You don't have that much anyway, right? Wrong! The average American teenager spends $3,000 per year. And at the end of your teenage years, will you know what happened to that $21,000? While $3,000 per year is most likely a lot less money than your parents spend, you should still be able to: Pay fair prices for quality items. Avoid being ripped off by misleading ads and salespeople. Stay out of debt. Save up for a car, college, or your own business. Give money that will make a difference in the world. Have money to do fun things with your friends.Larry Burkett and Todd Temple will show you how to take back the control of your money. You'll learn skills that will help you right now and prepare you for a successful financial future.

Your Good Life Starts Now

Live beyond your means but spend within them.
Take your steady out for that $350 dinner after the big promotion. You might just have to eat PB&J for a week to make it happen.

Splurge when it makes sense.
Buy the designer jeans you can’t live without in your size, at full price. But you better walk away from last season’s must-have sweater, even if it is 75 percent off!

Make more money with your money.
Invest in stocks to make the big bucks and start saving for retirement now.
You want to be debt-free in your swinging sixties.

Have it all . . . just not all at once.
Want a Mercedes more than anything in the world? You can make it happen . ..but probably not while sharing a summer beach house with your friends.

Finally a savvy, realistic finance book for those of us who love our Starbucks mocha lattes and Razr cell phones but don’t want our Jimmy Choo shoes or Bose headphones buried under a pile of burgeoning debt. Twenty-something financial reporter Farnoosh Torabi tells you that you can satisfy your sophisticated tastes and achieve financial bliss.

The key: prioritizing your expenses according to what you want the most—splurging when you can and saving on other things. From sensible grocery shopping (yes, you can have your organic yogurt and eat it, too!) to cyberbanking, empower yourself to live a guilt-free, Gucci- and gadget-clad good life without sacrificing financial security.

Editorial Review:

Today's young people are not only interested in money, they're quite knowledgeable about it--which is apparently what happens when you mix computer know-how with full employment and parents who play the market. Most, however, still require some assistance as they begin to build their nest eggs. Janet Bamford's Street Wise: A Guide for Teen Investors fits this bill nicely because it assembles virtually everything these budding financiers need, and presents it in language they understand. Bamford addresses the market's operation, full-service versus discount brokers, taxes, investment clubs and games, and even the possibility of a Wall Street career. Her best advice concerns stocks and mutual funds and is again delivered in a relevant, complete, and thoroughly noncondescending manner. "A stock is to a mutual fund," she writes at one point, in a style familiar to her audience, "as: (a) a can of soda is to a six pack, (b) the Dallas Cowboys are to the NFL, (c) a kitten is to a dog, (d) a flower is to a garden." The answer, by the way, is (d). Bamford also discusses specific kid-friendly investment vehicles, as well as the initial fiscal forays of high-fliers like thestreet.com's James Cramer. --Howard Rothman
