Editorial Review:

Favoring neither the "in-your-face" aggressive tactics of the "break-through-the-glass-ceiling" school of thought, nor the "sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice" little-girl approach, Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels shows women how to be outstandingly successful and personally actualized without becoming just like men.

There are 63 million working women in America, but only eight are top company CEOs. While women make up nearly 50 percent of the workforce, working women perform 90 percent of household and childcare duties. Women are left wondering, "Do I have to make a choice between my career or my life?" This book answers that question.

Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels is the first book to teach women:

• How to climb the corporate ladder and have fun doing it. • How to use 12 of their natural roles and talents to advance in Corporate America. • How to thrive in a downsizing and outsourcing global economy. • How to achieve both a rewarding career and a fulfilling life. • What to do when they hit the glass ceiling.

"Life-Work Balance" helps you assess your current balance and provides tools for planning and making changes. Are you living and working the way you want to? This active guide will give you a chance to reflect on your priorities and honestly assess the choices you are making about your time and energy. Simply reading this book won't lighten your workload, alter other people's expectations, or make stress disappear. However, if you apply the concepts and tools you learn here and commit to following through, you will discover new ways of both thinking and acting that will help you make decisions that support who you want to be and what you want to achieve. These decisions will often be difficult and may challenge organizational norms, other people's value systems, or even your own assumptions. But, defining what balance looks like for you, recognizing what you can change, and creating an action plan will bring you closer to achieving your personal and professional goals. You can begin by trying out a few of the simple but powerful ideas and exercises here.

Review of "Walk Softly and Carry a Big Idea" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think this is an excellent book for anyone who is working. As a designer of programs for managers and executives I keep track of the current market and read or scan most of the books published, and there are some good ones. This book is a fictional story that carries a truly big idea. Imagine if you could have it all--a way to succeed at work without giving up your life. Jones' book provides seven profound lessons you can apply immediately to improve the relationships you have not only at work but in your private life as well. This is a book for real people with real problems. As the story unfolds, you are able to analyze the problems and are guided into discovering realistic answers. Those answers can help managers make choices that will serve them not only in their business settings but in their personal lives as well.

Editorial Review:

An inspiring fable that delivers real-life power, purpose, and inspiration-wisdom that could otherwise take years to find

From one of the most creative executives today comes an entertaining, powerful, and instructive business and life fable that provides clarity to today's most troubling questions: How can I manage or lead myself first and then others through increasing complexity? How do I find order in the chaos? How do I move from feeling isolated to becoming a part of a larger community? How do I find balance in my work and home life? Jones weaves a compelling tale of Scott, a manager struggling with the increasing chaotic demands of his work and life. Scott has lost a sense of passion, purpose, and meaning and has settled into a pattern of endless deadlines, late nights, to-do lists, and pressure. Using this creative backdrop, Jones provides profound guidelines for creating productive work relationships and teams and for discovering what is real in your life.

Editorial Review:

As we begin the twenty-first century, UK employees work the longest hours in Europe. Workplace stress and home responsibilities are among the top five causes of absence from work. Yet work-life balance has emerged as a key concern for employers, policy makers and the media. This edited volume contains findings from fourteen research projects within the ESRC's Future of Work Programme. The research examines the notion of employment flexibility and the effects of gender and care responsibilities on work and work performance. Conflicting needs of employers and employees and the gender divisions in work and family life call into question the feasibility of achieving the Government's aim of work-life balance for everyone.

Editorial Review:

Today's managers and executives are cash rich but time poor. Surveys show that up to 800f managers exceed their contracted hours, while cases of work-related stress continue to increase at an alarming rate. Although awareness of the issues of career vs home life has been around since the 1970s, little has been done beyond the introduction of ineffectual legislation.  The time is right for a fresh approach.

In this remarkable book, Winston Fletcher takes as his starting point a set of specially commissioned interviews with 16 of the most accomplished businessmen and women in the UK, including Sir Richard Branson, Michael Grade CBE, Nicola Horlick and Sir Christopher Bland. Each interview is an exploration of success, despite the many sacrifices along the way, and gives hope to everyone that a satisfactory work/life balance can be achieved.

What is clear is that the way forward lies in taking control of your own personal agenda. Even companies with a sound work/life balance philosophy depend on the individual making choices for themselves. Readers also have a unique opportunity to calibrate themselves using the Work/Life Ratio, enabling you to see where you stand.

Use the powerful lessons contained in this book to ensure that you take control of your work/life balance - and start reaping the benefits.

Great Book - Easy Read 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was an excellent read both in content and in length. The storyline was very enjoyable with a nice setting that anyone could picture themself sitting in. The book's content was very introspective whether from the point of view of dealing with change in a workplace setting or change in your personal life. The context of the book was around a personal change of living the busy life versus doing what makes one truly satisfied with life.

The book uses 11 rules of Gumption that take you from making a decision, even a small one to how to sustain happiness and satisfaction with your choices.
