Easy to read and comprehensive introduction to a challenging field. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Good introduction to Construction Management and the emerging design-build method of building. The author writes well and has a remarkable command of the subject matter, however, some of the descriptions should not be taken as authoritative. For example, in chapter 6, Prof. Jackson describes liquidated damages as a penalty. Clearly an erroneous description. Nevertheless, a CM library building block and a must have book for any Construction Managers or student of the field.

Editorial Review:

DJs have gone from being underpaid live jukeboxes to becoming premier entertainers, producers, businessmen, and musicians capable of commanding admiration from thousands and earning serious money. Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's Last Night a DJ Saved My Life was the definitive history of the DJ. Now they gather their mastery of the artistic and technical aspects of being a DJ into a clear, accessible, and entertaining guide. How to DJ is the perfect guide -- from the most basic keys to establishing a music collection and a distinctive sound, to elementary record-spinning, to the complex skills of scratching, hot-mixing, and beat-juggling, as well as the inimitable art of creating an evening of sound that is perfectly timed, balanced, and unforgettable. Diagrams throughout illustrate phrases, beat timing, and song structure with no reliance on music theory, and resource lists recommend everything from which songs are best (and most fun) to learn with, to good sources for building a library of disks, CDs, and MP3s. For those who want to turn pro, the authors give sage advice on the vagaries of the club and music business. Short quotes, anecdotes, and photos of famous DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and Derrick Carter are featured.

PLEASE, BUY THIS BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars.

Ok, first off. If you want to get in to the games industry then buy this book. If you dont then you are just cheating yourself. I have learnt more from this book than all the other design books conbined. While most books seem reasonably happy to bombard you with complicated and confusing infomation, this book presents every topic very clear and concise. It takes you through all the areas of game development with great detail yet acknowledges that you are new to a lot of things and does its very best to give you a good understanding. Before reading this book I was very unclear on a lot of industry related infomation. But not now thanks to Marc Mencher acting as my personal tutor page after page. Finally I have a structured plan on how I am going to break in to the industry. Before reading Get In The Game I really had no idea of how I was going to get in to my dream job. Now however I have a great understanding of what I have to learn and everything I need to do. I now have a great degree of confidence and with Marc Mencher's advice I have began networking. I really can not think of anything negative to say about this book. Ok, so the resume section could of been a little better executed but it was there to teach you how to put together a good resume and thats what its done. On top of all that it has a very useful resource catalogue. Please for your own benefit buy this book. It will really help you. I cannot thank Marc enough for putting together this fantastic book.

abysmal 1 out of 5 stars.

I often interview programmer candidates, so I bought this book to calibrate my interviewing style and skills. I am appalled at the advice in the book -- I guess I should hope other firms do interview this way, so they'll gather the programmers I definitely don't want and leave the good ones for me.

Besides the defects other reviews have already mentioned (in this day and age, if you only hire candidates who show up in suit&tie as this book recommends, you'll end up missing many of the best techies!), some parts are positively creepy -- e.g., under "Gleaning Demographics" it claims that, while some questions are illegal, you should still slily ask questions to hiddenly gather that kind of information, since aspects such as whether the candidate has small kids (illegal to ask about that) should "factor strongly into a hiring decisions" -- so, ask what the candidate does to relax, that will dupe them into revealing whether they have a family.

Disgusting, really, and I find myself hoping somebody ends up in lots of trouble for practicing such weaselly duplicity -- meanwhile, all I can recommend to anybody but outright weasels is to carefully avoid this horrible book.

Editorial Review:

Offering accumulated observations of interviews with hundreds of job candidates, these books provide useful insights into which characteristics make a good IT professional. These handy guides each have a complete set of job interview questions and provide a practical method for accurately assessing the technical abilities of job candidates. The personality characteristics of successful IT professionals are listed and tips for identifying candidates with the right demeanor are included. Methods for evaluating academic and work histories are described as well.

Read this to understand programmers 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I have to say, this is a great book, almost unique in its scope; I wish there were more books like this. There are many collections of short biographies of mathematicians, and a few of computer scientists, but that's not quite the same as programmers. If you want to know what programmers do, the best thing is to read their code, but failing that (or in addition to that) you need to read interviews like this. I wish someone would do another book like this covering programmers of the last 15 years, but this one has a very good selection of programmers from the early PC era, and the interviews are very well-done: they let the programmer speak, yet the interviewer keeps them on track.

I'm sure some people will object: "How can this be a great book; it's from Microsoft Press! It features Bill Gates on the cover! Four times larger than anyone else!" Perhaps it would be better if Gates' picture were smaller, but admit it -- how many of the other faces do you recognize? And the fact is, billg was an extremely influential programmer, and the interview with him is a good one. I liked it so much I was inspired to write a short fiction piece on the subject (search for "Y2K Saga").

But don't just take my word on this book: trust the "customers who bought this"; they're also buying heroes of the open source movement like Joel and ESR, as well as (to my mind) the two best author/consultants in the business, Demarco and Weinberg.

It may still take you ten years to become an expert programmer, but carefully reading this book should speed up your quest, or at least let you understand better the programmers around you.
