Too many propellers 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book hoping to learn MS Project Server workflow from a functional utilization perspective. While the book covers the features, it fails miserably to connecting the dots in a clear manner. This has diminished this book to a reference guide. In the next edition, take note. Make the security model more clear. Make the portfolio feature more clear, etc., etc., etc.

I have worked with many epm tools in a similar manner as a field consultant and this book as written for MS Project Server does not advance the practice.

On a brighter note, you have a strong foundation, wear the shoes of a PMO leader to gain better understanding of what content is required in your next edition.

There should be jail time for these kind of writers 1 out of 5 stars.

Yeah, great book IF you already know all this stuff. As a technical writer by profession I would use this book as a first draft to begin to create an understandible presentation of IIS. This is filled with ambiguity unless you know IT administration from way back...For example, the author romps through setting up a website using a wizard. Fine. But "hello!" am I supposed to know what the permissions are that I am setting up? For whom? For the website visitor or the FrontPage author, or what??? As it turned out I was locking the pages from editing by any FrontPage users. Great.

Yeah, a fine book for the inner cult. But no concept that someone might be setting up a dedicated server as a "mom and pop" ISP. I finally punted and called Microsoft... We finally figured out the problems and I can guarantee you it was nothing that this book could have helped with... The only thing worse than confusing software is ambiguous technical writing about it!

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 is meant to act as an intermediary for communications among processing and storage systems from diverse vendors--think of it as a sort of Jimmy Carter for operating systems. Systems administrators charged with maintaining a multivendor environment know that the analogy to Middle East warring factions could, unfortunately, be taken a lot further. Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 Resource Kit exists to further the cause of Host Integration Server, providing a set of tools, utilities, and modifiable scripts you can use to make your heterogeneous systems get along as well as possible. Like any technical book and CD-ROM package, your opinion of this one will vary directly with its ability to solve your particular problems. Regardless, Host Integration Server users will want to have this kit on hand, both for its "just-in-case" value and its ability to inspire new thoughts about how to solve sticky integration problems.

Don't head to Microsoft's Web site, get the list of utilities on this book's companion CD-ROM, and base your decision to buy solely on that. This is the only printed documentation around on one of Microsoft's newest and least-known products, and the authors do quite a bit to explain how the server works, architecturally and procedurally. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000, explained for the system administrator who has to make it mediate among heterogeneous systems. The bulk of coverage (in text and in software) goes to SNA services, Component Object Model Transaction Integrator (COMTI), and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ).

This book is not worthy of the "Unleashed" series, which typically has stellar books. Mostly just marketing level advice with very little in-depth information. You can get more information out of a Google search.

Editorial Review:

Building server-side applications requires a different way of thinking. Many APIs are not in the repertoire of most programmers, so Inside Server-Based Applications provides an extremely useful survey of requisite C APIs, along with custom C++ classes and advice for creating Windows 2000 services and other server components. Any intermediate to advanced C/C++ developer will benefit from this intelligent and practical-minded title.

Inside Server-Based Applications begins with the Win32 C APIs needed for server-side development, including functions for multitasking, running services, and event logging. But this text is much more than an API reference. The author provides a valuable custom C++ encapsulation for Windows 2000 services (a class that is enhanced as the book progresses). There are also some excellent short examples of RAS, TAPI, MAPI, WinSock socket programming, and named pipes for those who need to incorporate these powerful APIs into their applications.

Later chapters concentrate on the Internet, particularly using MFC to create ISAPI extensions (and filters) for Microsoft IIS. (The author provides two versions of a phonebook Web application, both in ASPs and ISAPI.) A standout demonstrates how ATL can create components that speed up your ASPs. The author's expertise with server-side programming favors efficiency, for example, using the ODBC C API instead of ADO. (He also offers a C++ encapsulation of the ODBC, another useful perk.) The book culminates in a Windows 2000 service to monitor network activity (plus an ISAPI program to administer this program within a browser).

As Web applications become more and more popular, programmers will need to bring their skills to bear on the server side of computing. This admirably clear and authoritative text can point the way to successful development on Windows 2000 servers if you've got some previous C/C++ experience. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Introduction to server-side programming, Windows 2000 support for server applications, multitasking and synchronization APIs, Web-based servers, Win32 console and service APIs, impersonation and event-logging APIs, Remote Access Service (RAS), Telephony API (TAPI) , Simple and Full Messaging API (MAPI), ODBC C API and sample C++ encapsulation, Active Server Pages (ASPs), building ATL-based components for ASPs, Internet Server API (ISAPI), MFC and ISAPI extensions and filters, WinSock API, TCP/IP and named pipes, SQL Server 7 basics, Transact-SQL, stored procedures.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) may be relatively new on the Web-publishing scene, but it's very closely integrated with the Windows infrastructure and therefore an attractive option for many organizations. Microsoft Content Management Server 2002: A Complete Guide is both a tutorial and a reference in which the authors strive to explain the Microsoft Way of rising to the Web publishing challenge. You'll want this one close at hand if you're involved in setting up or maintaining a MCMS site. Preferably, you'll have read the chapters that deal with architecture and design--which collectively make up about half of this large paperback document--well in advance of installing the first MCMS component. Better yet, you'll have had the various members of your Web publishing team (network people, Windows administrators, database experts, and so on) read, ahead of time, the chapters that concern them.

This team-authored book uses a variety of strategies in communicating information to the reader. These include discussion of design issues (generally quite effective in making the reader think about the situation on his own site), narrative elucidation of procedures with frequent screen shots, and code listings (generally under-commented and therefore less useful than other elements). In any case, this is from-the-source documentation of an expensive software package. You'll benefit by having it around. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to install, configure, and use Microsoft Content Management Server 2002. Sections deal with the general architecture of MCMS, and its particular ways of facilitating page design, user interaction, and workflows. Integration with Visual Studio--the chief advancement in the 2002 version--gets lots of attention, as do security and user rights managements. The Publishing API (PAPI) is covered in greater depth here than anywhere else.

NT services are Win32 programs that start automatically when a server is booted and run in the background whether or not the user is logged in. Organizations need to programme NT services to support mission-critical software, boost NT performance, access certain functions of the operating system, and/or programme any Microsoft application server. Because the customer base for NT-based application servers is growing so rapidly, more and more programmers have recently become aware of a need to learn what used to be a fairly advanced specialisation Using a tutorial method, this book explains how to develop and implement NT services. Coverage includes: optimizing the event log; learning to utilize NT management functions like SNMP, MMC, the Registry and the control panel; configuration; sockets and socket clients; security and debugging issues; development frameworks using sockets; DCOM, CORBA, MSRPC and MSMQ. The text also contains implementations of complete NT services with all the leading development tools including C, C++, ATL, Visual Basic, Java and Delphi.

Editorial Review:

Getting started building a Web site is simple enough-the hardware is cheap, the software is easy to install, and the market of potential visitors is huge. If it's a company Intranet site, you can even run it over the corporate network; with no need for expensive cabling and ISP connections. The problems come as your site starts to grow and mature. Web sites are supposed to be enticing and exciting (so as to attract new visitors), and contain ever-changing content (to make those visitors keep coming back). How do you maintain and keep control of a fast-growing and ever-changing site, while still keeping it informative, accurate, and error-free? The answer is automation; and the combination of Windows NT Server, Internet Information Server, a server-based data source, and Active Server Pages, makes it possible to design your site so that it's easy to manage and maintain. They even make it easier to add regular new content, and keep the site looking fresh. Do you know how many visitors your site gets, and who they are? How can you tell which topics your visitors are most interested in, and which areas of your site get the most traffic-and even what times of day are busiest? How do you implement secure access to certain areas, so that you can charge for premium content or prevent access to administration pages? This book tackles all these topics-under the three general headings of controlling, maintaining and monitoring your Web site. You won't see pages of setup information for Windows NT and SQL Server, or a tutorial for ASP or SQL. What you will see is down-to-earth discussion of the issues that webmasters have to face daily, and real code solutions. If you are building or administering a Windows NT-based Web site, this book should be on your shelf.
