ActiveX and MFC? Buy this book... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For a great resource of how to develop activex controls with MFC...this is the book.

MFC makes getting started in ActiveX controls easy... but these's a world of details that can have you pulling your hair out...don't go that route...get this book. I bought this after a year of developing many MFC controls - and I still found this book usefull.

Check out the author's ATL book also!

Must Have Book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Tom Armstrong's development of a simple class that grows up to be an automation control is very straight forward. The clear logical progression is well supported by the accompanying source code that I compiled and worked with as I traversed through the book. I was able to apply the techniques directly in creating my own activeX control for use with our product. There are a few improvements that should be incorporated into the next edition: 1. A proof- reader needs to be hired...too many typeos...Figure 6.5 on p.256 is not even readable. 2. A small "snippet" of detailed usage intructions for certain utilities like the ActiveX Control Pad presented in Chap12. Otherwise a keeper!!!

Editorial Review:

Learn how to incorporate, create, and customize ActiveX controls with Designing and Using ActiveX Controls. The book covers the fundamentals of Microsoft's Component Object Model, the Microsoft Foundation Class Libraries, ActiveX control automation with Internet Explorer, complex graphical and non-visual controls, and developing reusable components with Visual C++. The CD includes over 30 reusable custom components plus all the source code from the book.

Editorial Review:

Surely, our society must have passed some technological milestone in order for component software to merit a comic novella. Mr. Bunny's Guide to ActiveX attempts to enlighten the reader about Microsoft's distributed-computing solution without actually explaining the technology, as more gauche programming books frequently do.

This book is funny! To wit (so to speak), an excerpt:

In Visual Basic, you form windows using forms. A form is a window that you form. At first forms are unformed. You must form your forms using the form designer (formerly the former). In the form former, an unformed form forms a uniform formation....

You get the idea. This book is a hoot and a half. The basic idea is that a smarty-pants bespectacled rabbit and a hick farmer travel around together, having metaphorical experiences that (more or less) help explain how ActiveX works. Hey, Mr. Bunny makes about as much sense as any other approach to COM documentation, and he's a lot less pretentious.

Mr. Bunny's Guide to ActiveX will appeal to people who already have a pretty good grasp of what Microsoft's component architecture is all about--and who have realized it's a complicated morass worth a laugh or two. --David Wall

Editorial Review:

Speech software has been a hot topic in the computer industry for as long as there have been computers. Computer speech has been around in one form or another for over 30 years, but early speech software could only run on very big and expensive computer hardware.

Thanks to Microsoft, the size of your computer is no longer a major limitation to computer speech. Just like with so many other computer technologies, it took Microsoft to make speech software easy to program, and even easier for PC users to use speech to control their Windows software applications.

With Windows Visual Basic ActiveX Voice Control Automation Services, Speech API (SAPI) and Speech Suite Software Development Kit (SDK), complex computer speech synthesis, and even speech recognition, has become more accessible to all programmers for use in their multi-media business, education and recreational applications.

This book offers the reader a detailed exploration of Windows Speech Automation Services via Visual Basic ActiveX Voice Controls available in MS Speech API Versions 4.0 to 5.1, as well as third-party SAPI vendor SDKs such as IBM ViaVoice and Dragon NatSpeak. It provides a thorough introduction to Windows Speech Recognition Programming for beginning as well as advanced programmers.

Editorial Review:

Dan Appleman's Developing COM/ActiveX Components with Visual Basic 6 provides expert-mode knowledge of COM controls along with a guide to some of the latest features in Visual Basic. Extremely thorough and densely packed with advice, this book is just right for the programmer who needs to know all the details about Visual Basic controls.

The author begins with a tour of ActiveX and COM, along with some common myths about the technology. His introduction to COM technology is good, but Appleman also explains the pros and cons of COM objects used as in-process dynamic-link libraries (DLLs), standalone EXEs, and remote processes.

When it comes to Visual Basic, the author gives plenty of expert knowledge on class and project options. He covers how to design objects in Visual Basic up close and includes some hard-to-find material on collections and multithreading programming techniques. Appleman also provides an interesting example, a live stock-quote server.

A good deal of the book concentrates on writing ActiveX controls in Visual Basic. Although some developers use the Active Template Library (ATL) and Visual C++ for high performance, it's clear that Visual Basic can do a fine job of creating reusable controls. The author presents a soup-to-nuts tour of ActiveX control development, with due consideration of such topics as properties, events, property pages, and even security and signing. Final sections on ActiveX Documents and the new Visual Basic 6 WebClasses (for ASP development) show off Internet development. In all, this book offers much useful material on expert-mode topics geared to the more seasoned Visual Basic developer. --Richard Dragan

Editorial Review:

The order in which ActiveX and VBScript appear in this title should be reversed: This book is a solid and detailed tutorial on VBScript and how to use it within an ActiveX browser environment. The authors ease you into the subject with simple projects that introduce VBScript, the ActiveX Control Pad (Microsoft's free visual tool for adding ActiveX controls to Web pages), and basic manipulation of HTML and browser objects through VBScript. With these preliminaries mastered, you move on to a hefty middle section that offers a thorough grounding in VBScript. Detailed chapters cover datatypes, variables, operators, events, string manipulation, functions, loops, and single- and multi-dimensional arrays. The author illustrates the discussion with examples covering many common uses for VBScript, including data validation and manipulation of HTML objects.

The final third of the book concentrates on using VBScript with controls, including the HTML Layout Control, and on working with image maps, browser objects, and cookies. Other topics include using third-party controls, converting existing Visual Basic applications to VBScript Web applications, and understanding basic interaction between VBScript and Java applets. The book is handsomely designed, clearly laid out, easy to read, and enriched with useful indexes, including a VBScript reference. The bundled CD-ROM includes all examples from the book, ActiveX Control Pad, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01, trial versions of several HTML authoring tools, and a grab bag of other useful tools.

Very good for beginner, easy to follow, funny to read. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is for beginner, even new-comer to the programming field. Although I have five years experience in VB programming, I still have fun in reading this book.

For example, it teaches you:

1. the defference in playing a .wav file in VBScript and HTML a. in VBScript-- document.write " src=sound1.wav"; b. in HTML-- a href="sound1.wav" Click this to hear something interesting. /a (this source code may not be displayed properly in this web browser, so a omit < and > here.)

2. the defference in the click event sub for a push buton for an AxtiveX command button and for an HTML form button. a. for ActiveX command button, name the sub Click; b. for HTML form button, name the sub OnClick;

--Funny? I skimed this book very fast and finished it just in one day, because it's very eary to read.

Best Learning Book For Me 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Every person has ideal explanation / hands-on ratio for maximal learning of a new programming topic. Of four "VB5 & ActiveX" books I bought, this was the one from which I learned ActiveX progamming. (It has quite a few errors. Perhaps parts of the book were written with a Beta version of VB5...) My copies of Kurata & Appleman are now more useful than this book, but they didn't make sense to me until I worked through this book.

Good starting point for ActiveX Control creation 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Of the various ActiveX control books I have, this one is really for beginners. I am preparing MCSD exams and find ActiveX part in Hawhee's book too condensed. Without much prior knowledge about it, piling information in Hawhee's book is just too much to understand/remember. I also read Dan Appleman's book which is quite good theoretically, but it doesn't teach you the much about the actual steps. So Appleman's book is harder to follow than this book. I'd say combining the three books makes a lot of sense. While this book provides hands-on guidance, it doesn't teach you the things behind the scene, where Appleman's book does great on. The hawhee's book, on the other hand, provides a good review which lets you find the holes in your knowledge.

The first comment is right on that the book has many errors. Also the writing sometimes is wordy.

Editorial Review:

Presents programming techniques in logical and easy-to-follow sequences that introduce the principles involved in developing programs, beginning with basic programming and moving to interactivity, animation, and more. Original. (All Users).
