Editorial Review:

Whether you're an old-school scripter who needs to modernize your JavaScripting skills or a standards-aware Web developer who needs best practices and code examples, you'll welcome this guide from a JavaScript master.

Other JavaScript books use example scripts that have little bearing on real-world Web development and are useful only in the chapter at hand. In contrast, Peter-Paul Koch's book uses eight real-world scripts he created for real-world clients in order to earn real-world money. That means the scripts are guaranteed to do something useful (and sellable!) that enhances the usability of the page they're used on.

The book's example scripts include one that sorts a data table according to the user's search queries, a form validation script, a script that shows form fields only when the user needs them, a drop-down menu, and a data retrieval script that uses simple Ajax and shows the data in an animation.

After an overview of JavaScript's purpose, Peter-Paul provides theoretical chapters on the context (jobs for JavaScript, CSS vs. JavaScript), the browsers (debugging, the arcana of the browser string), and script preparation. Then follow practical chapters on Core, BOM, Events, DOM, CSS Modification, and Data Retrieval, all of which are explained through a combination of theoretical instruction and the taking apart of the relevant sections of the example scripts.

Too many typos 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Although the content is for the most part good, I have found after just two chapters that there are so many typos (tags not closed properly, etc.) and left out content (such as CDATA statements,) the lessons end up generating JavaScript errors and don't validate, so you have to go back and modify the script on your own - not an easy task when you are just learning, since you have to research the issue using alternate resources. It appears that the author copy-and-pasted his errors into further examples. In addition, you are asked to type comments that are not explained, so you don't know why you are including them. Also, in one of the Case Projects in chapter 1, you are asked to try to fix a problem that is not addressed until Chapter 2. I am taking JavaScript as a college course, and our class is a little frustrated.

Editorial Review:

JavaScript, Fourth Edition is designed as a guide for beginning programmers to develop Web applications using the JavaScript programming language. It introduces a variety of techniques, focusing on what students need to know to start adding JavaScript to their Web pages. In each chapter, students perform tasks that focus on a particular technique required for building and creating JavaScript programs. The examples and exercises in this book will help students learn the basics of how to use JavaScript with well-formed Web pages, including how to manipulate the browser object model, validate forms, use object-oriented techniques, and learn how to trace and resolve errors in JavaScript programs, to name a few. Advanced topics include how to manage state information, use the Dynamic Object Model (DOM), create Dynamic HTML (DHTML), update Web pages with AJAX, and create server-side scripts.

Make sure you get second (or greater) printing 3 out of 5 stars.

Updated:
The publisher has now provided me with a corrected copy so I would like to update on my negative remarks made previously. This an excellent book for beginning JavaScript programmers and it also makes a good reference (or cookbook) for experienced programmers. If you need a jumpstart into the world of clientside scripting this is the book I recommend. Give it 5 stars now.

[Old review: I have just received this book in its first printing of the 2nd edition.
Unfortunately the publishers have let the author down badly.
This book would have rated 5 stars from me if it did not contain bad printing errors which cause most of example code in the diagrams to be invisible.
Hold off on this one until the next corrected printing.]

Editorial Review:

? Features more than 500 oversized, annotated screenshots and a companion Web site with all the code from the book
? Demonstrates over 100 key JavaScript tasks, such as using buttons to trigger events, detecting browsers, changing text and link colors, working with forms and frames, and determining environment properties
? Each step is illustrated with callouts that show the reader exactly where the action occurs on the screen
? JavaScript remains extremely popular for use in interactive Web pages

Editorial Review:

Dojo offers Web developers and designers a powerful JavaScript toolkit for rapidly developing robust Ajax applications. Now, for the first time, there’s a complete, example-rich developer’s guide to Dojo and its growing library of prepackaged widgets. Reviewed and endorsed by the Dojo Foundation, the creators of Dojo, this book brings together all the hands-on guidance and tested code samples you need to succeed.

Expert Web developer James E. Harmon begins by demonstrating how to “Ajax-ify” existing applications and pages with Dojo, adding Ajax features such as client- and server-side validation as quickly and nondisruptively as possible. Next, he presents in-depth coverage of Dojo’s user interface, form, layout, and specialized Widgets, showing how they work and how to use them most effectively. Among the Widgets, he covers in detail: Date Pickers, Rich Text Editors, Combo Boxes, Expandable Outlines, and many others.

In conclusion, Harmon introduces the Dojo toolkit’s powerful capabilities for simplifying Ajax development. He thoroughly explains Dojo’s helper functions, shortcuts, and special methods, illuminating each feature with examples of the JavaScript problems it can solve. This section’s far-ranging coverage includes strings, JSON support, event handling, Ajax remoting, Dojo and the DOM, testing, debugging, and much more. All source code examples are provided on a companion Web site, including source code for a complete tutorial case study application.

thorough coverage of the language 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The text is a very good and complete explanation of JavaScript. It describes the best usage of JavaScript with the latest common browsers at the time of writing (early 2004). There are numerous examples which express the programming ideas in a simple fashion.

If you have programmed in other languages, JavaScript should be an easy learn with this book. Programs written in it tend not to be very long, as they are associated with a single web page. While JavaScript deals nicely with the various objects in a browser, like a window or document, the programs tend to have a procedural flavour.

Editorial Review:

Create dynamic, interactive Web pages with the latest upgrade to this flexible development tool. Coverage includes event handling, object oriented programming, IE specific content, XML, and sample code that lets you work through projects and provides groundwork for your own creations. Provides information for new and non-professional developers and also more advanced coverage for experienced JS developers who want a comprehensive reference.

Another nerd validates their own knowledge 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 10 people found this review helpful.

An overwhelming amount of information without a simple beginning. The author jumps from beginning level information to way too sophisticated so fast that it will lose any non-technical person.

Excellent resource for anyone but the novice programmer 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pro: really good reference work for most people
Cons: 1) Not for someone who doesn't know either javascript basics or another scripting language. 2) Organization is good, but it isn't an encyclopedia and it isn't a start-to-finish tutorial. 3) Poor typeface decisions.

This book is the greatest for several different types of people. First, anyone who knows the basics of javascript, from advanced beginner to advanced js user. Second, anyone who wants to learn javascript and already knows some programming; you can use it as a tutorial, but only if you don't need much explanation about scripts and object-oriented programming.

It really is just excellent for someone who has previously learned something about one of the chapters but needs a refresher and/or more detailed/comprehensive walkthrough.

Four stars instead of five for a completely unnecessary mistake. Unfortunately, the W3c ignores people who do not have eagle-sharp vision and will fill a page full of semicolons and colons, or parens and curly brackets. If you don't have a font that clearly distinguishes these, it is a major source of semantic errors and eyestrain. The font chosen to print the code in this book could not be worse. Colons and semicolons are almost impossible to distinguish (not to mention periods and commas),and curly brackets look like thin lines with no curls.

C'mon guys. There are fonts of every type where periods and commas are easier to distinguish, and curly brackets have a distinct shape. USE THEM FOR PUBLISHING CODE!!

Editorial Review:

  • This new edition of the definitive guide to JavaScript has been revamped to cover the latest browsers, language updates, extensions, and JavaScript standards
  • Part tutorial and part reference, the book serves as a learning tool for building new JavaScript skills and a detailed reference for seasoned JavaScript developers
  • Danny Goodman's exclusive interactive workbench, The Evaluator, makes it easy to master JavaScript and DOM concepts
  • Offers deployment strategies that best suit the user's content goals and target audience
  • Bonus CD-ROM is packed with advanced content for the reader who wants to go an extra step
