Good book with a catch 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The book is great for beginning programmers. It has end of chapter review questions and code exercises. THE CD DOES NOT PROVIDE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS OR EXERCISES. WHILE THE PRESENTATION IS GOOD I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING ANOTHER BOOK. ONLY INSTRUCTORS CAN HAVE ACCESS TO THE ANSWERS. THIS OFFERS NO ASSISTANCE TO PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE LEARNING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.

Editorial Review:

For comprehensive introductory courses on Java Programming. This text provides a comprehensive, cumulative introduction to the concepts and practice of Java programming. The early chapters provide the conceptual basis for understanding Java and guide students through simple examples and exercises; subsequent chapters progressively present Java programming in detail and culminate in teaching the development of comprehensive Java applications. The appendices contain a mixed bag of topics that include an HTML tutorial. To facilitate developing and managing Java programs, the book is aided by Visual J++ 6. With a tool like Visual J++ 6, students not only develop Java programs more productively, but also learn Java programming more effectively.

J Sharp, Future of Java Developers 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent example of how an IT book should look like. Explaining the depths of .Net Framework, as well as using J# and Asp.net. It's a shame that a great deal of people do not pay attention to the importance of J#. J# is the best way for Hardcore Java programmers to combine their knowledge of Java with the superiority of .Net Foundation classes in order to produce Windows Applications. J# is a very good option for Asp developers, who would rather use Java for their applications, rather than Jsp. The war on the future of Java has begun, and C# and J# together are tough to beat.

MS Visual J# 5 out of 5 stars.

Well written text. Clear, easy to follow instructions. Will give you all you need to start programming.

Editorial Review:

Presented in an easy-to-browse format, this erudite book provides the authoritative technical details you need to leverage Microsoft Visual J# .NET and the richness of the Microsoft .NET Framework to build scalable, enterprise-level applications.

Editorial Review:

Programming Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 provides a solid working introduction to Microsoft's new Visual J++ tool for Windows development using Java. This tools-based tutorial delivers a quick tour of the strengths of the Visual J++ product.

Early sections in the book discuss the differences between the versions of Java promoted by Sun and Microsoft. The author presents several simple console programs written in both Sun "core" Java classes and Microsoft Java using the Windows Foundation Classes (WFC). A comparative approach is used again for simple graphical user interface (GUI) applications written in both AWT and WFC. (The author also compares the event models used by Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) and WFC, including the controversial Microsoft delegates keyword.)

The book then delves into the more advanced aspects of building WFC user interfaces, including ListView and TreeView controls, toolbars, and even simple drag-and-drop functionality. A chapter on graphics programming covers basic graphics output in WFC.

Further on, the author looks at multithreaded programming, ADO database programming, and building "local" and ActiveX controls using the Visual J++ tool. Standout sections include coverage of native Win32 calls--and even custom C++ DLLs--using J/Direct. The book closes with material on Java applets and programming dynamic HTML (DHMTL) via Java on the client and server, though the book only scratches the surface of this topic. An appendix provides an introduction to the syntax of the Java programming language for the Java novice.

Best suited to those readers with some previous Java or C++ experience, this book is all you need to start using the Visual J++ tool productively for Windows development. --Richard Dragan

A very well written book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a definate book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced users should only have this book for reference or to go back over the basics.

This book does an excellent job with an intro to JAVA, and then proceeds to introduce you to the Visual environment. Syntax is stressed, and great examples are given. If you're looking for a first or second book, this is it.

The reason it isn't a 10 is because the book becomes slightly "dry"...a few more screen prints would help the readers "feel" like they were on the right track.

Editorial Review:

Get the most out of Visual J++, the Java compiler from Microsoft, with Java™ Programming with Visual J++™. You get a complete overview of the Visual J++ development environment as well as the basics of Java programming. Java Programming with Visual J++ also teaches you how to develop applets and applications, work with the AWT, add interactivity to your applets, incorporate graphics, animations, and cross-platform user interfaces, navigate the Java API, and much more. The bonus CD-ROM includes sample applets and all the code in the book.

Editorial Review:

After taking a quick look at the Visual J++ 6 programming environment, this book jumps right in with building simple applications, showing off features such as forms, menus, and status bars that are part of most Windows applications. (The author goes even further with some material on HTML-based help systems and drag-and-drop support.) Next the book explains how to use basic Windows controls and the Windows Foundation Classes (WFC) used to encapsulate their functionality. Details on more advanced controls such as TreeView and ListView follow.

Instead of a comprehensive tour of every control and feature, the author concentrates on what you need to get started with Visual J++ right away and then gets into basic database programming, including grid controls. Later sections of the book focus on creating custom WFC controls. (Since Visual J++ manages the difficulty here, you can write WFC controls without mastering the details of ActiveX.)

The final chapter presents a very useful case study for an inventory database for an online book company. --Richard Dragan

Hit the ground running. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ideal book for those whose eyes glaze over after the first 500 pages of the metaphysics of OOP found in most Java books. The authors walk you through paced examples and exercises that skip over a lot of the details that are peripheral to the current topic under consideration. The only reservation is that J++, Microsoft's dialect of Java, is probably going to be phased out in favor of C#. CD-ROM includes examples and exercises plus a trial edition of J++.

Editorial Review:

For a quick and useful tour of essential Visual J++ features and capabilities, Learn Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Now can get you up and running fast. This title combines an introduction to the Java programming language with instruction on how to create basic applets, including animated applets, before teaching how to build Java applications. The book also covers topics such as input/output (I/O) and how to call Win32 API functions using J/Direct. Along the way, the authors introduce Windows Foundation Classes (WFC) and component development--a real strength of the new Visual J++. This book allows the developer with at least some programming experience to get started in the world of Visual J++ development. --Richard Dragan

Don't buy. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If I could give the book a one star rating, I would. I really did not have problems with the content of the book and the way it was written as much as I had problems with the publisher. The book came with a defective CD ROM. Upon calling the publisher, I went round and round with them, all the while they insisted I have an "out of date CD ROM driver." I pointed out to them I had read a number of CD ROMS (seven to be exact) since I had tried to read theirs. Plus I have a new system running Windows 98.

It wasn't worth hassle, so I gave up. If you buy, I hope you have better luck than I did.

Editorial Review:

Developing Enterprise Applications With Visual J++ helps readers make the most of Java and Intranet programming environments. Assuming some familiarity with Java, it focuses specifically on Java programming in the Visual J++ environment. The CD contains all source and binaries as well as sample ActiveX controls, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3, and the ActiveX SDK.
