Do not buy this book used! You won't be able to use the CD 1 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book represents the core of what is wrong with corporate America today. This book is packaged with a CD that has software on it used throughout the book. What they don't tell you anywhere is that you must register the software using a unique and one time only coupon in the cd pouch. Furthermore the software then expires in 120 days. To not mention this limitation that basically makes the book useless for resale is very deceitful on the part of the publisher and the company that supplied the software. Never have I seen such B.S. before as this when it comes for games that publishers play!!! THIS INFORMATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN BIG BOLD LETTERS -- YOU CANNOT RESELL THIS BOOK DUE TO THE ONE-TIME USE OF THE ENCLOSED CD SOFTWARE --

Editorial Review:

Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.

Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.

The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment-all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits. This book will teach you how to:

  • Program computers using C, assembly language, and shell scripts

  • Corrupt system memory to run arbitrary code using buffer overflows and format strings

  • Inspect processor registers and system memory with a debugger to gain a real understanding of what is happening

  • Outsmart common security measures like nonexecutable stacks and intrusion detection systems

  • Gain access to a remote server using port-binding or connect-back shellcode, and alter a server's logging behavior to hide your presence

  • Redirect network traffic, conceal open ports, and hijack TCP connections

  • Crack encrypted wireless traffic using the FMS attack, and speed up brute-force attacks using a password probability matrix

Hackers are always pushing the boundaries, investigating the unknown, and evolving their art. Even if you don't already know how to program, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition will give you a complete picture of programming, machine architecture, network communications, and existing hacking techniques. Combine this knowledge with the included Linux environment, and all you need is your own creativity.

Editorial Review:

People love secrets. Ever since the first word was written, humans have sent coded messages to each other. In The Code Book, Simon Singh, author of the bestselling Fermat's Enigma, offers a peek into the world of cryptography and codes, from ancient texts through computer encryption. Singh's compelling history is woven through with stories of how codes and ciphers have played a vital role in warfare, politics, and royal intrigue. The major theme of The Code Book is what Singh calls "the ongoing evolutionary battle between codemakers and codebreakers," never more clear than in the chapters devoted to World War II. Cryptography came of age during that conflict, as secret communications became critical to both sides' success.

Confronted with the prospect of defeat, the Allied cryptanalysts had worked night and day to penetrate German ciphers. It would appear that fear was the main driving force, and that adversity is one of the foundations of successful codebreaking.

In the information age, the fear that drives cryptographic improvements is both capitalistic and libertarian--corporations need encryption to ensure that their secrets don't fall into the hands of competitors and regulators, and ordinary people need encryption to keep their everyday communications private in a free society. Similarly, the battles for greater decryption power come from said competitors and governments wary of insurrection.

The Code Book is an excellent primer for those wishing to understand how the human need for privacy has manifested itself through cryptography. Singh's accessible style and clear explanations of complex algorithms cut through the arcane mathematical details without oversimplifying. --Therese Littleton

Editorial Review:

In defending your systems against intruders and other meddlers, a little knowledge can be used to make the bad guys--particularly the more casual among them--seek out softer targets. Counter Hack aims to provide its readers with enough knowledge to toughen their Unix and Microsoft Windows systems against attacks in general, and with specific knowledge of the more common sorts of attacks that can be carried out by relatively unskilled "script kiddies." The approach author Ed Skoudis has chosen is effective, in that his readers accumulate the knowledge they need and generally enjoy the process.

The best part of this book may be two chapters, one each for Windows and Unix, that explain the essential security terms, conventions, procedures, and behaviors of each operating system. This is the sort of information that readers need--a Unix person getting into Windows administration for the first time needs an introduction to the Microsoft security scheme, and vice versa. A third chapter explains TCP/IP with focus on security. With that groundwork in place, Skoudis explains how (with emphasis on tools) attackers look for vulnerabilities in systems, gain access, and maintain their access for periods of time without being discovered. You'll probably want to search online resources for more specific information--Skoudis refers to several--but this book by itself will provide you with the vocabulary and foundation knowledge you need to get the details you want. --David Wall

Topics covered: How black-hat hackers work, what tools and techniques they use, and how to assess and improve your systems' defenses. The author explains how Windows, Unix, and TCP/IP can be exploited for nefarious purposes, and details a modus operandi that's typical of the bad guys.

The New State-of-the-Art in Information Security: Now Covers the Economics of Cyber Security and the Intersection of Privacy and Information Security

For years, IT and security professionals and students have turned to Security in Computing as the definitive guide to information about computer security attacks and countermeasures. In their new fourth edition, Charles P. Pfleeger and Shari Lawrence Pfleeger have thoroughly updated their classic guide to reflect today's newest technologies, standards, and trends.

The authors first introduce the core concepts and vocabulary of computer security, including attacks and controls. Next, the authors systematically identify and assess threats now facing programs, operating systems, database systems, and networks. For each threat, they offer best-practice responses.

Security in Computing, Fourth Edition, goes beyond technology, covering crucial management issues faced in protecting infrastructure and information. This edition contains an all-new chapter on the economics of cybersecurity, explaining ways to make a business case for security investments. Another new chapter addresses privacy--from data mining and identity theft, to RFID and e-voting.

New coverage also includes

  • Programming mistakes that compromise security: man-in-the-middle, timing, and privilege escalation attacks
  • Web application threats and vulnerabilities
  • Networks of compromised systems: bots, botnets, and drones
  • Rootkits--including the notorious Sony XCP
  • Wi-Fi network security challenges, standards, and techniques
  • New malicious code attacks, including false interfaces and keystroke loggers
  • Improving code quality: software engineering, testing, and liability approaches
  • Biometric authentication: capabilities and limitations
  • Using the Advanced Encryption System (AES) more effectively
  • Balancing dissemination with piracy control in music and other digital content
  • Countering new cryptanalytic attacks against RSA, DES, and SHA
  • Responding to the emergence of organized attacker groups pursuing profit

Fails as an Intro book for Students 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book was used in my Intro to Computer Security class, which I thought was going to be an interesting until I had to read the book. This book is suited more for those already in the field or have knowledge about computer security.

The way the book is writen makes it a hard read as it is full of theory and hardly any application. Complex theories are not explained in a way that allows somebody new to the field the chance to understand them.

Examples are more or less useless as they are either complex or not explained in full. Most of the examples cause more confusion then understanding. This is not just my opinion but the majority of my the class.

Very detailed reference 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book for a graudate-level introductory computer security class and it was very detailed and explained concepts well. I took a security and privacy course in undergrad and Bishop's book is much better than the book I used last fall. If you have strong math skills and strong coding skills, this is the book for you. It is even helpful to people studying for the CISSP and Security+ certifications in information security.

The bible for File System Forensics 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Great Book. Great job Brian. A must have in your bookshelf if you are serious about computer forensics.
It only lacks two things to be perfect: a reiserfs and a HFS+ sections.

Only an error. GPT partition schema isn't used only in big servers. New Intel Macintoshes use it by default for their boot drive.

super 5 out of 5 stars.

Great resource 5 out of 5 stars.

Great resource on file systems and file system data structures, although I wish it covered Apple's HFS+.

Superb!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't say enough good things about this book and author. The material is beautifully laid out and the writing style is fluid and effortless. The author has a real talent for using metaphors and figures to illustrate elusive concepts.

All but the very rarest file systems are covered, and numerous 'screenshots' show how to use the Linux command prompt and get your hands dirty exploring disks on your own.

While this book is a gold standard for digital forensic examiners, it would also be valuable to the computer enthusiast who's interested in things such as what happens to their hard drive when they format it, exactly what happens during the boot process, etc.

I've had 3 courses in digital forensics, and this book gives an in-depth discussion of disk level concepts (HPA, FAT, MFT, etc) that were merely glossed over in my formal studies.

Good Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I had to use this book when I was in Graduate school and this was the course book. I still have the first edition and looking to purchase the latest version. It was very interesting information I didnt get anywhere before. I remember in my company some very Sr. developers were working to understand how to implement machine authentication, and they were using it. Having used it before and with my course notes I helped them out. What a name for me :). I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the network security. At least it is not as ridiculously expensive as Tanenbaum books. Yes it is very mathematical but remember this is a computer science book meant for actual software engineers. People with no computer science background but working in industry might find it difficult in the beginning.

Network Security 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very good book on network security. It is a bit too technical for leisure/work reading. I got this book because it is a required text for my graduate class.

A good book. 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is great. Hope the authors will plan to include wireless network security in the 3rd edition.

Best Installation Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Having worked with Exchange since 5.0 I have read many installation guides and administrator's handbooks and I would rate this one as the best. I acquired this book after teaching how to configure and install Exchange 2007 to corporate clients and I have since done away with delivering them my own notes and simply recommend that they purchase this book. It is the ultimate guide to installing and configuring Exchange from a technical perspective. Way to go!

Editorial Review:

According to Microsoft, Exchange Server delivers over 75% of all corporate e-mail. The 2007 release is the fist major overhaul since 2003. It attempts to address the challenge of delivering greater performance and accessibility while increasing protection against a new generation of high risk security threats. Microsoft has added many new features that dramatically improve the scope of Exchange Server and the Outlook web client, positioning the platform as a groupware and collaboration tool that is accessible to remote and wireless users as will as those wired directly to the corporate intranet. The typical SysAdmin needs a reference that cuts through all the complexity and seldom-used features to get the product successfully deployed as efficiently as possible---exactly the job of the "How to Cheat" series.

minimal maths treatment 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Stallings and Brown directs the book at a computer professional, who might be a programmer or system administrator. The book deliberately minimises the mathematical aspects. Much of the topic consists of layers above sophisticated encryption algorithms. Alas, a detailed treatment of the latter often requires heavy math background. If you do desire such a treatment, I recommend Matt Bishop's Introduction to Computer Security. That book was deprecated by some reviewers, who found it too mathematical.

Anyway, back to Stallings and Brown. It does proffer good technical explanations of various malware. Like worms and viruses. And attack modes like Denial of Service, and Distributed Denial of Service. Important variants are also covered - reflector and amplifier attacks.

Countermeasures to malware then naturally enter the narrative. So you learn how a firewall functions. Plus how to set up a honeypot to attract spam, phishing and malware.

So far, the above might be regarded as external attacks on your system. Sometimes, worms or viruses might try to take advantage of weaknesses in installed programs. Hence, another section of the book is for those of you who write such programs. Explaining how to guard against buffer and stack overflows, for example. These 2 are perhaps the most common entry points for malware.
