Achieving maximum network security is a challenge for most organizations. Cisco® ASA, a new unified security device that combines firewall, network antivirus, intrusion prevention, and virtual private network (VPN) capabilities, provides proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network.

This new family of adaptive security appliances also controls network activity and application traffic and delivers flexible VPN connectivity. The result is a powerful multifunction network security device that provides the security breadth and depth for protecting your entire network, while reducing the high deployment and operations costs and complexities associated with managing multiple point products.

Cisco ASA: All-in-One Firewall, IPS, and VPN Adaptive Security Appliance is a practitioner’s guide to planning, deploying, and troubleshooting a comprehensive security plan with Cisco ASA. The book provides valuable insight and deployment examples and demonstrates how adaptive identification and mitigation services on Cisco ASA provide a sophisticated security solution for both large and small network environments.

The book contains many useful sample configurations, proven design scenarios, and discussions of debugs that help you understand how to get the most out of Cisco ASA in your own network.

“I have found this book really highlights the practical aspects needed for building real-world security. It offers the insider’s guidance needed to plan, implement, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco ASA in customer environments and demonstrates the potential and power of Self-Defending Networks.”

Excellent reference, could use a proofread 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This resource kit is very informative, but I've never seen a book with so many typographical errors. Fortunately, almost all of the errors are not material in that they do not affect the accuracy of the content. But the book should have undergone a proofreading or at least a comprehensive spelling/grammar check.
Typo issues aside, the book is a very useful resource. The coverage of Vista's new (file) image-based deployment is comprehensive. Changes such as KMS (for licensing), admx (for Group Policy), file/registry virtualization (under UAC and IE Protected Mode), and BCD (replaces boot.ini) are discussed. Key additions to the collection of Group Policy objects are highlighted. And, of course, there is a lot of trivia-type information that, though interesting, may not find actual day-to-day use.
The resource kit tools are focused mainly on enterprise deployment and scripting. If you are looking for the types of tools included with previous Windows resource kits, you will be disappointed.

Writing useless books for dummies 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the real specialty the authors of this book have mastered...
I am astonished at how many positive reviews this horrible, stinky title has received ... how many friends do this guys have? In fact this has got to be one of the worst tech book I have ever read, a total waste of money and paper.
My advice is , avoid this book, and any other book form the same authors, like plague! You will learn NOTHING from them.
The authors go on and on babbling about how unsecure wireless networks are, and are nonetheless unable to clearly indicate you any technique to take advantage or to protect form this weakness. All you get (apart from the boring and repetitive author's ruminations) are a few screenshots of NetStumbler (hey man, I can see by myself what it looks like, teach me how to use it instead ..), one screenshot of Kismet running on a linux xterm and a list of some of its command options (come on do you think that a beginner would ever be able to figure out how to use a open source tool like Kismet all by himself?)
Ah we also get a little advertisement for a couple of non-free tools like AiroPeek ... like a beginner should spend money on that? And , wait, there is no tutorial or intro on those tools as well. Just the usual couple of screenshots to make the book look good if you flip through it at the bookstore.
Seriously, I know this is hard to believe, but this pathetic excuse for a book is just a series of boring trivialities
For example ... did you ever think about the fact that installing a non-authorized, non-encrypted access point in your office network might actually be a security risk? I am sure you didn't, but thanks to this beautiful book you know, as the author spends pages and pages rambling and babbling about this absurd topic!
Years ago the "For Dummies" series used to be the right choice if you needed a humorous, tutorial-like but solid intro to a 'foreign' technology, but now the title is not a joke anymore.
"Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies".. true to its title!

Editorial Review:

Become a cyber-hero - know the common wireless weaknesses

"Reading a book like this one is a worthy endeavor toward becoming an experienced wireless security professional."
--Devin Akin - CTO, The Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) Program

Wireless networks are so convenient - not only for you, but also for those nefarious types who'd like to invade them. The only way to know if your system can be penetrated is to simulate an attack. This book shows you how, along with how to strengthen any weak spots you find in your network's armor.

Discover how to:

  • Perform ethical hacks without compromising a system
  • Combat denial of service and WEP attacks
  • Understand how invaders think
  • Recognize the effects of different hacks
  • Protect against war drivers and rogue devices

Very informative 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I graduated from UAB in the fall of 2004. While attending school I was blessed with the opportunity work as an InfoSec Professional while utilizing Business Intelligence. In the spring semester of 2005 UAB implemented an information security course, i was given the opportunity to audit the course. We used this book in the course, at first i thought that it was over kill and boring, but at the end of the semester i realize that all the information is necessary for students to grasp the concepts of information security. One must remember that information security is still in its infancy as a profession, but it rapidly expanding. This book is great if one need an introduction to the information security profession. I currently have this book in my library, where i still use it as a reference when writing information security related papers for ACM.

Editorial Review:

Principles of Information Security examines the field of information security to prepare information systems students for their future roles as business decision-makers. This textbook presents a balance of the managerial and the technical aspects of the discipline and addresses knowledge areas of the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification throughout. The authors discuss information security within a real-world context, by including examples of issues faced by today’s professionals and by including tools, such as an opening vignette and “Offline” boxes with interesting sidebar stories in each chapter. Principles of Information Security also offers extensive opportunities for hands-on work.

Editorial Review:

The commander of the army virology unit that battled the Ebola virus in The Hot Zone--and the current Chief of Special Pathogens at the Centers for Disease Control--teams up with the bestselling coauthor of MindHunter to chronicle his extraordinary thirty-year career fighting deadly viruses.

From Central and South America to a deadly outbreak of a mystery virus in the American Southwest, from fieldwork in Egypt and the mountains of Kenya to immobilizing an army unit to stop a gut-wrenching outbreak of Ebola only miles from Washington, D.C., Virus Hunter takes us backstage in the inevitable clash between biology and human lives.

Because of new, emerging viruses, and the return of old, "vanquished" ones for which vaccines do not exist, there remains a very real danger of a new epidemic that could, without proper surveillance and early intervention, spread worldwide virtually overnight.  And the possibility of foreign countries or terrorist groups using deadly airborne viruses that are easily obtained rather than unwieldy explosives looms larger than ever in the future.

High-octane science writing at its most revealing and best, Virus Hunter is a thrilling first-person account of what it is like to be a warrior in the Hot Zone.

Group Policy Fundamentals, Security, and Troubleshooting (Paperback) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this book at this year's Windows Connection after hearing Jeremy's Group Policy session and it hasn't disappointed. This is a must read. It starts with the basics and then moves onto the meat and bones of how GP works, deploying, how to manage & troubleshoot.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I also have his older one. They are both very informative. Most tech books are painful to read, his are actually interesting and believe it or not entertaining. He puts his personality into his writing, and it helps make what could be a very dry boring subject enjoyable.
I used his last version as my intro into Group Policy, and it gave me everything I needed to get started creating and implementing new policies. His new edition includes the new Preference settings. If you are new to Group Policy and want just one book to get started, this is the one.

Editorial Review:

Streamline Windows Server management by grouping policy settings to monitor and regulate users and the network's computers. Revised and updated to include Windows Server 2008 and Vista, Group Policy: Fundamentals, Security, and Troubleshooting examines how Group Policy monitors and regulates users and controls activity on a network’s computers. Employ the various Group Policy settings, learn how to manage Group Policy with Management Console, troubleshoot Group Policy settings, and implement network security with Group Policy. Also, find ready-to-use scripts that you can use to automate routine administration tasks.

Not really all-in-one 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In my opinion this book is pretty good for study material, but the things it lacks are more in-depth thinking questions for every chapter.

I am not sure about the writing style. This book does have formal way of writing to present the materials but it sometime overlaps with previous chapters which made me feel boring. I prefer an easier to understand writing style instead of formal.

If this book is arranged and written according to compTIA objectives just like sybex does with its books, I think this will make the reader easier to navigate the area that they want to focus more.

This book covers cryptography in great details which is good, even though not all of them will be examined, such as the way how the algorithm is written and the formula.

As for other things, this book is good enough, worth reading but to really pass security+ exam, other books are recommended in combination with this book. I passed the exam with the help of this book along with sybex Fast Pass and got the measureup from newhorizon which is a training center that I used.

Editorial Review:

You'll find exam objectives at the beginning of each chapter, helpful exam tips, end-of-chapter practice questions, and photographs and illustrations. The bonus CD-ROM contains a testing engine with questions found only on the CD. This comprehensive guide not only helps you pass this challenging exam, but will also serve as an invaluable on-the-job reference.
