Newton's Telecom Dictionary 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my son who works in the Telecom business. He was very happy to get it and has told me almost every week how much he has used it. He carries it in his work truck and has even had other employees ask to use it.

A must have for someone in the telecommunications industry. 5 out of 5 stars.

A must have for someone in the telecommunications industry.

Once again we see technology advancements after technology advancements...

Newton's Telecom 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a telecom professional with 30 years of experience, this book is always at my desk. There are just too many acronyms and terms to keep them all in your head. Harry Newton also provides great tips, history and insight which would span many other reference books in his concide disctionary.

The best telecom dictionary around 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Having worked for telcos for over 20 years, and having seen many different telecom textbooks and dictionaries, I can say that hands down, Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the best telecom dictionary around. The author does an excellent job of explaining both the technical side and the business side of telecom, and he does an excellent job of keeping the dictionary up-to-date. Each year 500 to 1,000 new definitions are added to the dictionary, and existing definitions are tweaked to keep them current or to improve them in some other way. I like this ongoing committment. Another interesting thing about this dictionary is that it shows the role and impact of telecom and networking in specific industries, government, the military, human history, and society. And, as an extra little treat, the author sprinkles humorous entries here and there in the dictionary, which make for nice entertainment when one comes across them. Oh yes, the price is excellent, too. In spite of the book's steadily increasing page count, the author has managed to keep the price the same or about the same, year after year after year, which tells me that the author is conscientious about keeping the book affordable. For telecom professionals and newbies alike, this is the dictionary to get.

Editorial Review:

"Programming PHP," 2nd Edition, is the authoritative guide to PHP 5 and is filled with the unique knowledge of the creator of PHP (Rasmus Lerdorf) and other PHP experts. When it comes to creating websites, the PHP scripting language is truly a red-hot property. In fact, PHP is currently used on more than 19 million websites, surpassing Microsoft's ASP .NET technology in popularity. Programmers love its flexibility and speed; designers love its accessibility and convenience.

As the industry standard book on PHP, all of the essentials are covered in a clear and concise manner. Language syntax and programming techniques are coupled with numerous examples that illustrate both correct usage and common idioms. With style tips and practical programming advice, this book will help you become not just a PHP programmer, but a "good" PHP programmer. "Programming PHP, Second Edition" covers everything you need to know to create effective web applications with PHP. Contents include: Detailed information on the basics of the PHP language, including data types, variables, operators, and flow control statements Chapters outlining the basics of functions, strings, arrays, and objects Coverage of common PHP web application techniques, such as form processing and validation, session tracking, and cookies Material on interacting with relational databases, such as MySQL and Oracle, using the database-independent PEAR DB library and the new PDO Library Chapters that show you how to generate dynamic images, create PDF files, and parse XML files with PHP Advanced topics, such as creating secure scripts, error handling, performance tuning, and writing your own C language extensions to PHP A handy quickreference to all the core functions in PHP and all the standard extensions that ship with PHP

Praise for the first edition:

"If you are just getting into the dynamic Web development world or you are considering migrating from another dynamic web product to PHP, "Programming PHP" is the book of choice to get you up, running, and productive in a short time."

--Peter MacIntrye, eWeek

"I think this is a great book for programmers who want to start developing dynamic websites with PHP. It gives a detailed overview of PHP, lots of valuable tips, and a good sense of PHP's strengths."

Gaps in conceptual explanations: not for the intelligent reader 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I currently use this book to teach at the University of Michigan. (I chose it because it's what has been used here before.) The book is written in an accessible, reader-friendly style. It has many examples and pictures, which make it attractive -- a feature, I suppose, that is necessary to hold an undergrad's attention in these times we live in.

But what annoys me is the absence of conceptual rigor/detail and the sudden jumps in explanation. I want my students to be able to see what is going on and appreciate the simple elegant logic of microeconomic theory. Instead the book reads like it's delivering information to you, but isn't really explaining why it makes sense.

Here's an example. In Section 4.2 on Income and Substitution Effects, the effect of a price change is decomposed into income and substitution effects using constant utility. But as many of us know, there's an alternative way to do this too, which is holding purchasing power constant. For some reason that approach isn't mentioned. Instead, the text reads as though we were interested in the constant purchasing power approach, but then suddenly switches to a constant utility approach by saying "This substitution is marked by a movement along an indifference curve." But why? Wouldn't any intelligent student at this point start wondering how we went from purchasing power to utility? Flip back to Section 4.1 and find that the word utility has been quietly introduced there in a sentence that's in parentheses: "(Because the price of food has risen, the consumer's purchasing power -- and thus attainable utility -- has fallen.)"

Pooh. I don't like books that sneak important ideas into parentheses in order to avoid answering the all important question -- i.e. "Why?"

Editorial Review:

This book is well known for its coverage of modern topics (Game theory, Economics of Information, and Behavioral Economics), clarity of its writing style and graphs, and integrated use of real world examples. The emphasis on relevance and application to both managerial and public-policy decision-making are focused goals of the book. This emphasis is accomplished by including MANY extended examples that cover such topics as the analysis of demand, cost, and market efficiency; the design of pricing strategies; investment and production decisions; and public policy analysis. Economists and strategists looking to stay current with economic information.

Beginner 5 out of 5 stars.

I was faced with a project that could best be implemented with SharePoint, but I lacked experience, hence this book. It is an introductory book that presumes no foreknowledge of the subject and leads the reader incrementally through the features of SharePoint. The enclosed CD contains an eBook and the files for the chapter lessons. The print and page layout adhere to the proven format that makes the Step-by-Step series fruitful tutorials. The topics include:

*Build your own SharePoint site with easy-to-use templates
*Create lists and libraries to store information
*Add discussion boards, wikis, and blogs
*Set up Document and Meeting Workspaces for easy collaboration
*Share calendars, contacts, and data from Microsoft Office programs
*Customize your pages with Web Parts

This is authored by some of the same experts who have written advanced books about SharePoint, and their knowledge is evident in this lucid introduction. Elementary - as it should be for beginners.

Like a really, really long survey of SOA standards 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you want a book that covers most of the SOA standards in one place, this might be helpful. I think you could get that from Wikipedia. Lots regurgitation of SOA platitudes, not much value add. If you're looking to make the light go on about key SOA concepts, this isn't the book. It would make a good management summary of the technology, if it was about 1/3 as long.

Editorial Review:

This is a comprehensive tutorial that teaches fundamental and advanced SOA design principles, supplemented with detailed case studies and technologies used to implement SOAs in the real world. ***We'll have cover endorsements from Tom Glover, who leads IBM's Web Services Standards initiatives; Dave Keogh, Program Manager for Visual Studio Enterprise Tools at Microsoft, and Sameer Tyagi, Senior Staff Engineer, Sun Microsystems. All major software manufacturers and vendors are promoting support for SOA. As a result, every major development platform now officially supports the creation of service-oriented solutions. Parts I, II, and III cover basic and advanced SOA concepts and theory that prepare you for Parts IV and V, which provide a series of step-by-step "how to" instructions for building an SOA. Part V further contains coverage of WS-* technologies and SOA platform support provided by J2EE and .NET.

Not a joy to read and difficult to digest. 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book is geared toward readers such as Web Developers, Information Management / Compliance Specialist, Administrators to name but a few. If you are a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007, this book will be a most difficult read. The concepts and topics that are presented will have to be re-enforced with online research or the purchase of another book.

To give an example.
The book is composed of six sections, with the first three ( 663 pages in length ) being targeted towards administration and configuration. However, within this mix we have presentations on performance monitoring and MOM 2005, high level discussions on information security policies such as password and storage policies, data classification. We are introduced to advanced Enterprise topics such as the Business Data Catalogue and records compliance ( that is the Sarbanes Oxley Act etc. ). These discussions all assume prior expertise and should you be new to Sharepoint Server 2007 this will no doubt frustrate you. The Authors, in their quest to appeal to a wide variety of readers, cannot delve into the in-depth explanations, followed up by well worked out examples that a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007 would require.

Web Developers will tend to focus on Sections 5 and 6. While these sections do introduce Workflow Services, Webparts and products like Sharepoint Designer I found the overriding theme is again one of high level discussion and overviews. Expertise is assumed.

Overall I would say that if you are coming from a background with some expertise in Sharepoint Server 2003 or you require a high level picture of the abundance of features that Sharepoint 2007 can bring to your organisation in addition to how it integrates with other server platforms, such as ISA 2006 for example, you will enjoy this book and the nuggets of useful information it provides. The writing style is not engaging; this book is not a joy to read but it will tell you what can be done with Sharepoint Server 2007, outline best practices and point you in the correct direction. The how-to part is very much left to yourself.

If however, your goal in purchasing this book is an in-depth knowledge of the installation, administration and configuration of Sharepoint 2007 and you have no prior expertise with Sharepoint Server 2003 or indeed 2001, then you will gain little benefit from this book. You will find it difficult to read, difficult to digest and your understanding of Sharepoint 2007 will not improve. If anything, you may be discouraged from using Sharepoint Server 2007 which would be a shame as the product is in my opinion really good. Regards.

reference 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a very beginning student in computer networking and find the chapters dense but clearly written. My instructor has encouraged us to keep the book for future classes because even though we may not cover all the material in this course, it will be a handy reference for us in more advanced ones. The labs and Java applets are great for visualizing a lot of the more tricky concepts. The top down approach of working from the things you know (applications) helps you not feel totally lost right at the beginning before you get hit with all the acronyms. I would recommend this book to networking students at any level of expertise.

Editorial Review:

Building on the successful top-down approach of previous editions, the Fourth Edition of Computer Networking continues with an early emphasis on application-layer paradigms and application programming interfaces, encouraging a hands-on experience with protocols and networking concepts. With this edition, Kurose and Ross bring the issues of network security to the forefront, along with integration of the most current and relevant networking technologies.

Computer Networks and the Internet; Application Layer; Transport Layer; The Network Layer; The Link Layer and Local Area Networks; Wireless and Mobile Networks; Multimedia Networking; Security in Computer Networks; Network Management.

Editorial Review:

Smart organizations recognize that Web design is more than just creating clean code and sharp graphics. A site that really works fulfills your strategic objectives while meeting the needs of your users. Even the best content and the most sophisticated technology won't help you balance those goals without a cohesive, consistent user experience to support it.

But creating the user experience can seem overwhelmingly complex. With so many issues involved-usability, brand identity, information architecture, interaction design-it can seem as if the only way to build a successful site is to spend a fortune on specialists who understand all the details.

The Elements of User Experience cuts through the complexity of user-centered design for the Web with clear explanations and vivid illustrations that focus on ideas rather than tools or techniques. Jesse James Garrett gives readers the big picture of Web user experience development, from strategy and requirements to information architecture and visual design. This accessible introduction helps any Web development team, large or small, to create a successful user experience.
