Definitely 5 Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I come to this as a database developer with 25 years experience and with absolutely no knowledge of SharePoint. I rarely write a review. But on this book, I had to do so.

When I first started to administer and develop in SharePoint, I knew nothing about it. So I got 5 books. I still use one other book (the development book) for the heavy lifting but most of the time I use Mastering Windows SharePoint Services by Callahan.

I have several friends in other organizations that administer SharePoint. The ones who have training and knowledge love it. Those that do not, hate it. This is one way to get that information.

First, Callahan shows in detail how to install and secure SharePoint as he lists the underlying functions such as email, searching, and accounts.

Then, one command at a time he takes us through the process of all the services - lists, libraries, web parts, work spaces, and others.

Next, he demonstrates how granular the rights and privileges can be given. Specific users can see, access, use, or modify exactly what the site director decides while he monitors the activity.

Each step of every example is demonstrated throughout. Then the background information is discussed in depth.

Whether you are new to SharePoint or you are an administrator on it, this book will answer most of your questions.

The classic has been improved 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Back in 1993, during my senior year at school, I had to learn computer networks. Back then, the only decent book available was Prof Tanenbaum's 2ed. I had found that book boring because it covered every possible networking algorithm and technique in the world without any references to real-world networks.

Recently, after spending 12 years working on various protocols and networking devices (from DSL modems to core routers), I realized that I had lost touch with the larger world of networking. I had no clue about WiMax, Content Networks, etc. So, I started looking around for a simple to read book that would give me good enough perspective on these new technologies. And I happen to find Tanenbaum's newest 4ed book on Computer Networks.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Prof Tanenbaum explains the concepts very well. He also throws in a piece of his mind here-n-there throughout the book. Almost all of his observations are hilarious. The book is huge, but, with all the funnies thrown in, it is easy to read and understand.

My only complaint would be that some of the material needs to be rearranged to better suit the evolving networking technology world. But, even as it is, the book is a great, easy read for one and all, whether you are a student of computer science, computer engineering, or a manager wanting to brush up on the latest technologies, you will find all the know-how here in this book.

Editorial Review:

New edition of the classic best-seller. Takes a structured approach to networking, starting at the bottom and gradually working up to the top. DLC: Computer networks.

Editorial Review:

Think you have to be a technical wizard to build a great web site? Think again. If you want to create an engaging web site, this thoroughly revised, completely updated edition of Creating a Web Site: The Missing Manual demystifies the process and provides tools, techniques, and expert guidance for developing a professional and reliable web presence.

Whether you want to build a personal web site, an e-commerce site, a blog, or a web site for a specific occasion or promotion, this book gives you detailed instructions and clear-headed advice for:

  • Everything from planning to launching. From picking and buying a domain name, choosing a Web hosting firm, building your site, and uploading the files to a web server, this book teaches you the nitty-gritty of creating your home on the Web.

  • Ready-to-use building blocks. Creating your own web site doesn't mean you have to build everything from scratch. You'll learn how to incorporate loads of pre-built and freely available tools like interactive menus, PayPal shopping carts, Google ads, and Google Analytics.

  • The modern Web. Today's best looking sites use powerful tools like Cascading Style Sheets (for sophisticated page layout), JavaScript (for rollover buttons and cascading menus), and video. This book doesn't treat these topics as fancy frills. From step one, you'll learn easy ways to create a powerful site with these tools.

  • Blogs. Learn the basics behind the Web's most popular form of self-expression. And take a step-by-step tour through Blogger, the Google-run blogging service that will have you blogging before you close this book.

This isn't just another dry, uninspired book on how to create a web site. Creating a Web Site: The Missing Manual is a witty and intelligent guide you need to make your ideas and vision a web reality.

You’ll learn how to:

• Replace nonstop crisis response with a systematic approach to security improvement

• Understand the differences between “good” and “bad” metrics

• Measure coverage and control, vulnerability management, password quality, patch latency, benchmark scoring, and business-adjusted risk

• Quantify the effectiveness of security acquisition, implementation, and other program activities

• Organize, aggregate, and analyze your data to bring out key insights

• Use visualization to understand and communicate security issues more clearly

• Capture valuable data from firewalls and antivirus logs, third-party auditor reports, and other resources

• Implement balanced scorecards that present compact, holistic views of organizational security effectiveness

Whether you’re an engineer or consultant responsible for security and reporting to management–or an executive who needs better information for decision-making–Security Metrics is the resource you have been searching for.

Barely passed exam 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I just took the Network+ exam today and barely passed. The book has lots of good information, however it does not tell you everything you need to know for the 2007 exam! This book was written for the 2005 exam. Maybe if I took the 2005 exam I would have done much better, but I studied this front to back thoroughly and barely passed. There were many questions I had no clue on, because the book never spoke about it.

If you get this book, consider it a foundation, and then get something else that focuses on the 2007 exam. The book has very good information, just keep in mind that you will need to continue further than it gives you.

Editorial Review:

CompTIA's popular Network+ certification will soon be upgraded to cover advances in networking technology. Here is the only self-study package for the Network+ exam that combines comprehensive instructional material with sophisticated network and operating system simulation software. And it comes to you at a tremendous value (less than the retail value of the simulation software alone)! With this premium product, you get the leading CAQC approved Network+ Study Guide which provides in-depth coverage of all official objectives plus two valuable CDs. One CD includes advanced testing software with four bonus exams, electronic flashcards for PCs, Pocket PCs, and Palm devices, plus the entire book in PDF. The other CD contains a fully functional Virtual Lab that simulates a lab environment with Windows, NetWare, Linux and Unix servers, hosts, and clients, and includes over 30 hands-on labs and dozens of additional review exercises and practice questions.

Steps not clearly defined. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Steps are not clearly defined. Author puts steps in paragraph when he should be putting each instruction line by line. Its very easy to miss one crucial step and nothing works after that. Reason I gave four stars because author tries his best however may be the subject or so many steps you need to perform to make workflow work in sharepoint.

Editorial Review:

Workflow is the glue that binds information worker processes, users, and artifacts. Without workflow, information workers are just islands of data and potential. Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System details how to implement workflow in SharePoint 2007 and the rest of the 2007 Office System to help information workers share data, enforce processes and business rules, and work more efficiently together or solo.

This book covers anything you're likely going to need to know -- from what workflow is all about, to creating new Activities; from InfoPath forms to ASP.NET forms; from the Rules Engine to the object model. Theres even a section on integrating Office 2003 clients with SharePoint 2007 workflows. Youll come away from reading this book with solid knowledge of how to implement workflow in the new world of Office and SharePoint.
