This book is Nice for the Perl Beginner 3 out of 5 stars.

As a new person to the World of Perl, I selected this book as a good way to learn PERL across both NT and Unix Systems. I was impressed with the books coverage of the basic elements of PERL, but disappointed in the lack of real world solutions. This book is a good beginner for the budding Perl Developer, but it falls short for the Perl folks that really want to do some heavy stuff.

Great intro, and still my reference 4 out of 5 stars.

(This refers to the 1st edition, hopefully the 2nd edition is even better)
Maybe it's that I started learning Perl with this book, but I continue to use it as a reference even when O'Reilly "Programming Perl" BIBLE is right next to it on my shelf. I haven't been able to answer why, but I think it's for the following reasons:

O'Reilly is great if you know the name of the function you want. I find Cross-Platform Perl to be better when you know _what_ you want to do, but can't remember the functions that do it. Titles of chapters are (or were) user-friendly like "Working with Files" or "Launching Applications". O'Reilly has chapters like "References", "Data Structures", "Objects" and my favorite "Functions" (which has 200+ pages of, you guessed it, Perl Functions).

Get this book if you're new to Perl - you won't outgrow it.

Editorial Review:

Full of practical examples and updated for the latest version of Perl, version 5.6.0, this acclaimed introductory guide explains how to harness the power of Perl in heterogeneous UNIX-Windows-Linux environments, from automating applications and network functions to creating GUIs and interactive Web pages. The CD-ROM includes ActivePerl for Windows, the Perl source code, sample code and scrips, and useful Perl tools.

Editorial Review:

Everything you need to deploy Web services across multiple operating systems!

As the need for application-to-application communication and platform interoperability continues to grow, Web service developers need to be skilled in the technologies and languages that make this communication possible. Web services provide a language and platform independent standard for creating and connecting code that allows software applications (remote objects) to communicate with each other and users, via a network or the Web. Rather than focus on one specific technology or language, Cross-Platform Web Services Using C# and Java teaches how to integrate the various technologies of Web services using the two languages expected to dominate this growing area.

KEY FEATURES

* Focuses on the cross-platform interoperability of Web services
* Teaches all of the technologies and underlying standards of Web services, including XML, WSDL, and UDDI
* Covers development of .net and Java Web services
* Shows how to integrate applications developed with other languages and legacy systems
* Separate chapter on cross-platform implementation of Web service security including firewalls, SSL, ID, XML signatures, and testing
* Covers latest Web services tools of the Apache group, including SOAP, Axis and TOMCAT
* CD-ROM includes complete source code for all examples and projects

Editorial Review:

Communications access methods provide information to establish a connection between two operating environments across a network. This title is designed to be used in conjunction with the user's guides for SAS/CONNECT and SAS/SHARE. It provides you with the explicit steps needed for connecting two platforms, enabling you to access and manipulate data as desired. The easy-to-follow procedures are arranged by platform, access method, product, platform orientation (local host, remote host, client, server), and type of user. SAS 9.1 supports the TCP/IP, APPC, and XMS communications access methods for network connections with the z/OS, OpenVMS Alpha, UNIX, and Windows operating environments. SAS 9.1 also supports the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol that provides network security and privacy in Windows and UNIX operating environments. The DECnet, EHLLAPI, and NetBIOS communications access methods and the CMS, OpenVMS VAX, OS/2, and Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating environments are no longer supported. This title is also available online. This title is written for applications developers, system administrators, network administrators, and end users who use SAS/CONNECT and SAS/SHARE software.

Supports releases 9.1 and higher of SAS software.

Editorial Review:

Cross-Media Service Delivery is of interest to professionals and academicians working in content authoring and electronic publishing platforms; as well as in media and broadcasting.

The digitization of traditional media formats, such as text, images, video, and sound provides us with the ability to store, process, and transport content in a uniform way. This has led the formerly distinct industries of media, telecommunications, and information technology to converge. Cross-media publishing and service delivery are important new trends emerging in the content industry landscape. Mass-media organizations and content providers transitionally targeted content production towards a single delivery channel. However, recent economic and technological changes in the industry led content providers to extend their brands to cover multiple delivery channels. Following the content industry trend to "create once and publish everywhere" - COPE, a number of architectures, technologies, and tools are currently being developed and deployed to facilitate the automatic conversion of content to multiple formats, and the creation of innovative multi-platform services. This new approach enables the seamless access to information over different network infrastructures and client platforms. This work uniquely brings together a cross-disciplinary core of contributors to address the technical and business issues of cross-media publishing and service delivery. The contributions are organized into four different areas: the business issues driving the requirements for cross media content delivery, the architectures used for delivering content to multiple platforms, technologies that address specific practical problems, and, last but not least, concrete applications.

The first technical book I ever read cover to cover! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book does exactly what it says it will do: it teaches you how to operate your Mac in a non-Mac world giving many, many practical solutions. It even gives impractical solutions when no practical solutions are available! Published in year 2000, it is a treasure of fresh web links that allow you to get current information on every topic covered. Instead of going into boring, techno-babble the book focuses on giving scenarios of what is trying to be accomplished, such as finding the best way to transfer files between Macs, PCs, and Unix platform machines. Then it provides solutions in general terms naming any hardware or software required to accomplish the task. Finally, it provides a resource list at the end of each topic which includes related commercial, shareware, and freeware publishers, hardware manufacturers, and their web sites. If you are the person in your cross-platform organization or school that other people rely on to provide them answers, this book is a valuable resource!

Editorial Review:

Discusses how to survive and thrive with your Mac in a digital world. Provides the essential resource for every Mac user and administrator and explains how to network your Mac with Windows, and UNIX/LINUX server, access Windows software from your Mac and improve cross-platform Internet and software compatability. Softcover. DLC: Macintosh (Computer).

Waste of money 1 out of 5 stars.

One of the few books I will actually take the time to berate. It contains cursory overviews of some simple cross-platform issues. The book points to the authors software for a real solution to some of the cross-platform solutions. Unfortunately nowhere on the cover does it say that the software is not included.

Editorial Review:

Anyone interested in cross-platform development, from experienced developers to single-platform programmers who want to explore developing for multiple platforms, can benefit from the combination of issues and techniques presented by this master at cross-platform development.
