A useful, easy to read guide for setting up and using OpenDoc and Cyberdog. Takes you from starting out to some pretty advanced uses of Cyberdog and available plugins. Covers home and business use with examples and some ideas most of us would not have thought of, if we worked alone

Editorial Review:

It may be a PC users world, but Mac and Power Mac loyalists can still take comfort in the fact that there are some neat gadgets you wont find on any Pentium. For example, theres Cyberdog, the revolutionary suite of Internet tools that grants you unparalleled control over how you access and surf the Web. With Cyberdog, you can customize your browser, create an all-in-one Internet program, add greater interactivity to your Web documents, and save valuable disk space and RAM.

In Cyberdog: Live Objects on the Internet, authors Joe Kissell and David McKee show you why Cyberdog is the Mac users best friend on the Web. You learn how to download, install, and use Cyberdog v1.2, build Internet-linked documents, set up a mail sender and receiver, connect to URLs, FTP servers, Gopher sites, and Telnet hosts, work with plug-ins and third-party live objects, and more.

Editorial Review:

Focusing on developing cross-platform shaders in OpenGL Shader Language (GLSL) using the RenderMonkey environment, this guide makes it possible to combine the producing of complex graphics effects with the convenience of using OpenGL. Covering the sharp growth of the capabilities of graphic accelerators that has made writing shaders for complex real-time graphic effects a popular and rapidly developing subject, this book also includes a CD-ROM with cross-platform source codes for the program examples given in the book; both work with Microsoft Windows and with the increasingly popular Linux system.

Good OpenDoc primer, but lacks details that programmers need 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book quickly covers most aspects of OpenDoc. The book can be used as a primer before jumping into the OpenDoc programmer's reference manual, but nothing more. As I read the book, the most intriguing details were always referred to as being beyond the scope of the text; the reader is constantly being referred to the online reference manual. A beta version of the OpenDoc toolkit and reference manual is included. The toolkit is an easy install, and I was running the docshell the first day and playing around with some included parts. The reference manual, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Some of the sections (e.g. Scripting) are incomplete. An up-to-date version of the reference manuals and toolkit are available on the web.

The book shows code examples of cross-platform development for OS/2 and Win95, but is slightly OS/2 biased. For example, some of the code examples and chapters are OS/2 only, and the CD includes additional OS/2-only parts. However, the Win95/WinNT version of these parts are now available on the web.

Since the book remains at an overview level, it's an easy read. It took roughly two days to read cover-to-cover. If you want a book that teaches you the OpenDoc terminology and prepares you before diving into the reference manual, then this is the book for you. If you want a book that takes you through part development step-by-step or gives you in-depth coverage of any OpenDoc area, then you should look elsewhere.
