Press release:

The Data Management Association International (DAMA) Releases DAMA Dictionary of Data Management

Industry Takes an Environment-Friendly Stand on Standard Definitions

DAMA Dictionary of Data Management availability was announced at the DAMA International Symposium & Wilshire Meta Data Conference in San Diego March 16-20, 2008.

Over 800 terms defining a common data management vocabulary for IT professionals, data stewards and business leaders.

Over 40 topics including finance and accounting, knowledge management, architecture, data modeling, XML, and analytics.

Authored by DAMA International, published by Technics Publications, LLC, and edited by Mark Mosley, this dictionary will promote a standard set of data management terms within the field of Information Technology (IT).

Mosley says "As the premiere organization for data management professionals, DAMA seeks to lead the data management profession to maturity. One of the hallmarks of a mature profession is a common vocabulary with clearly understood definitions. DAMA offers the Dictionary to a field in great need of clarity in its terminology and semantics. We hope the Dictionary will be a useful tool for data management professionals, IT colleagues, managers, data stewards and business leaders. All these people share responsibility for data management, so it's very important for all parties to speak a common language."

Deborah Henderson, President of DAMA International Foundation and VP Education and Research for DAMA International, believes the CD-ROM format will not only be easier to use than the traditional book format, it is also more compact and environmentally responsible. "Publishing this work on CD-ROM saves over 4000 pounds of paper and conservatively 700 pounds of Greenhouse gases."

Glossary is not Cross Referenced as Advertised 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Keen's idea for the format of this book is good and the front cover tauts 40 additional new terms that were not included in the First Edition. The idea behind this book is that if you look up one term in the glossary (95% of this book is a glossary) at the end of the entry for the term you looked up there is a list of additional terms to cross reference for a more in-depth understanding of the concepts presented. For example: You can look up EDI or Electronic Data Interchange. It will cross reference you to an entry for "PLATFORM". You can look up the term "Architecture" and it will also cross reference and guide you to read the entry for "PLATFORM". You can look up the term "Network" and it will also instruct you to cross reference the listing for the term, "PLATFORM". HOWEVER, WHEN YOU GO TO LOOK UP "PLATFORM", IT IS NOT LISTED ANYWHERE IN THE BOOK! IT IS ALSO NOT INCLUDED IN THE INDEX. The copy editors get paid big bucks to check out this kind of thing and they totally blew it!..Especially, Harvard Business School Press as the publisher should know better. You can expect this kind of thing to happen with the first edition must it should not happen in the 2nd edition.

Standard wording for Standards 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent source of information when trying to find common ground for compliance documents and discussions. Soon to become the de facto standard for defining compliance terminology.

Great to have a source that can be used across all industries and disciplines.

Editorial Review:

The Language of Compliance is the biggest (3,000+ entries), and the best (the only glossary endorsed by the Unified Compliance Framework) resource for acronyms, terms, and extended definitions. Authored by the internationally acclaimed and award winning authoring team of Dorian Cougias and Marcelo Halpern, this is the glossary that more IT professionals turn to than any other. It covers the terms found in HIPAA, SOX, GLB, CobiT, ISO 17799 and 27001, BCI, BSI, ISSF, and over 100 other regulatory bodies and standards agencies.

Could Be Better 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

As with any other computer terminology book I've browsed through, it seems that this book has terms that some others don't, and other books have some terms that this one doesn't. Also, another book will give a better definition of a certain term than this one may. Or vice versa. The solution...? If you really want to have as much of a database of comuter terms as possible, have two or more books. A book with the most definitions may not be the best, because the definitions may not be descriptive enough. so be careful! Keep in mind, new terms are coming out every day rendering the book obsolete. Finding a good website of computer terminology may be an additional method of finding what you need if it isn't in a book. The layman's language and general thouroughness of this book does make it a good choice.

Editorial Review:

The seventh edition is substantially expanded with over 6,000 computer terms. This dictionary covers basic computer vocabulary, graphics and multimedia terminology, and a sampling of cyberslang and Internet terms, plus programming, networking, UNIX, and PC jargon. Profiles on industry leaders and historic happenings make this glossary interesting as well as useful. Definitions are tailored to the type of word. Basic terms are defined in layman's language while the specific technical jargon is defined with more technical terms. Comprehensive cross-referencing gives you quick access to what you're looking for.

Editorial Review:

If you call yourself a computer graphics professional but aren't sure of the meaning of cukaloris, Lambertian reflection, or umbra, you might want to pick up a copy of Visual Effects in a Digital World: A Comprehensive Glossary of over 7,000 Visual Effects Terms. Educational, fun, and historically fascinating, this is one of those books that every pixel monkey should have on his or her shelf.

If you've ever wondered what, exactly, rotoscope means (it has three different meanings) or what to eat with a "metaball," this book is for you. Chock full of interesting tidbits and a 32-page color gallery of examples, this is probably one of the more interesting technical dictionaries you'll ever have the pleasure of looking through.

Perhaps you know the difference between an array and an Arri, but the producer you're trying to explain it to is clueless. The clear, concise definitions listed here can help elucidate these terms and others so that even the most dense suit will, if not understand, at least feel like you must know what you're talking about.

It's one thing to be able to know what buttons to push, but something else entirely to be able to stump your friends with the meaning of arcane terms like Lindenmayer System or octrees. Everyone knows you're a geek. Now you can prove it. --Mike Caputo

Editorial Review:

This compact volume describes all of Ada's program units, statements and data types. It can serve as an introductory text or as a reference work. The use of each language feature is illustrated in a small working program. A comprehensive glossary/index provides users with a fast, easy way to locate examples and illustrations. Example programs are depicted graphically, supporting the metaphor that an Ada program is "a set of lego blocks smapped together."

The text is organized in six chapters, three appendices, references and the glossary/index. The first four chapters cover the essentials. The final two chapters introduce Ada's support for object oriented programming and Ada's built-in mechanisms for supporting concurrency and synchronization. This volume is intended as the first in the "LearnAda" series. See http://www.learnada.com for future announcements.

Have you been flamed recently? Or pinged? Or felt 404? Do you know the difference between a MUD and a MOO? Or between a WAP and a Wisp? Can you translate 8-0? Or cu4T?

This exciting glossary provides all the answers. It includes an A to Z of the jargon entering the English language with the rise of the Internet and cell phone technology, and it gives a dictionary-style treatment of those Internet terms that have begun to change their meaning in colloquial speech. Along with a definition, each of these entries contains a set of illustrations showing contemporary usage, helping you to understand and -- if you wish -- to participate in the cool communication of the electronic age. The book also contains a comprehensive guide to the special languages that have developed within electronic media -- smileys and text messaging -- and a complete listing of Internet domain names.

Editorial Review:

Abbreviations contribute to enhanced efficiency of writing, reading, and speaking, as well as greater comprehension of technical and scientific articles, reports, and lectures. They serve to reduce the time and cost of writing, typing, editing, and composition resetting. They also decrease the space required for texts, tables, and diagrams. As such, abbreviations are beneficial tools that enhance the dynamics of technical language. The Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms is a collection of over 16,000 entries that cover the fields of telecommunications, satellite communications, marine communications, radar and military communications, avionics, electronics, computer, Internet, radio and television broadcasting, fiber optics communications, information technology (IT), Information Communication Technology (ICT), remote sensing, cellular networks, Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR), and ham radio. It pays particular attention to the abbreviations used in ITU, Intelsat, IMO, IMSO, and APSCC documents. The glossary also contains abbreviations commonly found in telecom magazines, contracts, and financial documents. In addition, it includes entries that reflect the common terminology used by major telecom companies and operators, as well as those used by specialized institutions and standard organizations such as IEEE, ETSI, IETF, ISO, and GSM. It also includes abbreviations on new technologies. A thorough and essential reference, the Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms helps keep engineers, technical writers, technicians, and university students up to speed on the vast amount of terminology that comes their way.
