"Computer definitions that get you marks" 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This, folks, is the reference book for my A Level Students.

A Level is the main exam route taking in the UK for entry into Universities.

The continual rapid development of computer technology means it is a nightmare trying to keep up with terminology and acronymns. This glossary has the defintions the examiners will accept. Very useful when different text books all have their own definitons.

The 4star rating rather than 5 is a reflection of the date of issue of this glossary. There must be another one on its way soon, we sure need it.

Editorial Review:

This is the fourth edition of a highly successful, well-established reference book, first published by the British Computer Society, which defines the most commonly used terms in computing in a concise and easily understandable manner. It is divided into sections reflecting major areas of computing (applications, machine architecture, programming languages, etc.), within which entries appear alphabetically. Cross-referencing is also included, where appropriate, giving coherence to the book as a whole, and a complete index is provided. This new edition has been considerably expanded and contains over 750 defined terms. The emphasis has also moved away from a hardware bias of 'how computers work' to 'what computers do and how to make them do it'.

Standard wording for Standards 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent source of information when trying to find common ground for compliance documents and discussions. Soon to become the de facto standard for defining compliance terminology.

Great to have a source that can be used across all industries and disciplines.

Editorial Review:

The Language of Compliance is the biggest (3,000+ entries), and the best (the only glossary endorsed by the Unified Compliance Framework) resource for acronyms, terms, and extended definitions. Authored by the internationally acclaimed and award winning authoring team of Dorian Cougias and Marcelo Halpern, this is the glossary that more IT professionals turn to than any other. It covers the terms found in HIPAA, SOX, GLB, CobiT, ISO 17799 and 27001, BCI, BSI, ISSF, and over 100 other regulatory bodies and standards agencies.

Editorial Review:

Abbreviations contribute to enhanced efficiency of writing, reading, and speaking, as well as greater comprehension of technical and scientific articles, reports, and lectures. They serve to reduce the time and cost of writing, typing, editing, and composition resetting. They also decrease the space required for texts, tables, and diagrams. As such, abbreviations are beneficial tools that enhance the dynamics of technical language. The Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms is a collection of over 16,000 entries that cover the fields of telecommunications, satellite communications, marine communications, radar and military communications, avionics, electronics, computer, Internet, radio and television broadcasting, fiber optics communications, information technology (IT), Information Communication Technology (ICT), remote sensing, cellular networks, Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR), and ham radio. It pays particular attention to the abbreviations used in ITU, Intelsat, IMO, IMSO, and APSCC documents. The glossary also contains abbreviations commonly found in telecom magazines, contracts, and financial documents. In addition, it includes entries that reflect the common terminology used by major telecom companies and operators, as well as those used by specialized institutions and standard organizations such as IEEE, ETSI, IETF, ISO, and GSM. It also includes abbreviations on new technologies. A thorough and essential reference, the Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms helps keep engineers, technical writers, technicians, and university students up to speed on the vast amount of terminology that comes their way.

Editorial Review:

"The BCS Glossary" is the most authoritative and comprehensive glossary of its kind on the market today. This unrivalled study aid and reference tool has newly updated entries and is divided into themed sections, making it more than just a list of definitions. Written in a style that is easily accessible to anybody with an interest in computing, it is specifically designed to support those taking computer courses or courses where computers are used, including GCSE, A-Level, ECDL and 14-19 Diplomas in Functional Skills, in schools and Further Education colleges. The glossary has been compiled by members of the British Computer Society Education and Training Expert Panel, many of whom are teachers or former teachers. In creating the glossary, they have drawn heavily upon their many years experience in the education sector, as well as their detailed knowledge of computing. The resulting definitions, and the way they are organised, help the reader build up a knowledge and understanding of computing.
