Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have the first One-Page Project Manager book written by Clark Campbell, and as a Producer in the Video Game Industry I knew I needed to order the second book specifically written for IT Project Managers. These books gave me insight on project organization that I never learned in Business school or after 10-years in the industry. Great hands-on concepts that will simplify your life as a Project Manager.

The One Page Project Manager for IT Projects 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The One Page Project Manager for IT Projects is an excellent addition to the concepts and in-depth examples discussed in Mr. Campbell's first book, the One Page Project Manager. However, this new book not only stands on its own, but contains a very understandable, and abbreviated version of all of the concepts discussed in the first book as well as all of the 12 steps needed to construct and use the One Page Project Manager template to organize your IT project and use it as your tool to communicate project status to project team members and upper management.

The real value of the One Page Project Manager template lies in the fact that it is so comprehensive, addressing all of the five essential components of a project (Tasks, Timeline, Cost (both budget and actual), Objectives and Ownership) as well as simple to read, understand, and use as your primary communication tool.

There is no doubt that a responsible project manager would compile all of the data contained in the One Page Project Manager, but, if they are anything like me, they would have a thick folder in which it is all stored; definitely not the easiest way to lay your hands on any requested information quickly and gracefully. Using this tool provides two major benefits. One, in its construction, the project manager and team members must think through and organize the project, providing them with an in-depth understanding of the project's objectives, tasks, ownership, etc. and two, it allows upper management to follow the status of even a large project at a glance.

As Clark Campbell mentions, in order for this tool to become the definitive tool for communicating project status within your organization, project managers and top level managers and executives really must buy into its use. Mr. Campbell is quickly becoming a sought after speaker on the subject of The One Page Project Manager. Having participated in one of his workshops recently, I am happy to say that he was informative and entertaining. He provided, in a half day workshop, the opportunity for the attendees to actually work through the creation of a One Page Project Manager, learn how to create and populate each section of the One Page Project Manager, understand how it is used it in an extensive project (one that was successfully completed in his company), to handle complexities that may arise in a complex project within the existing structure, with some variances.

To position yourself to speed along the learning curve of this essential tool and to get widespread buy-in of the One Page Project Manager within your organization, I highly recommend both the book and attendance at one of Mr. Campbell's excellent speaking engagements.

Editorial Review:

Clark A. Campbell, author of a best-selling book on project management, has written a project management guide specifically for IT professionals who want to save time and work more efficiently. The One Page Project Manager for IT Projects:Communicate and Manage Any Project With A Single Sheet of Paper presents you with a winning formula for managing your complex IT projects using minimal resources. Coverage of vital topics like working with outside consultants, ERP project management, and ISO 9000 will be of special interest to IT managers and CIOs.

First and best IT PM book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Information Technology Project Management is the first book any technical project manager should read. It does a great job of laying out the challenges and tools of technical PM. It provides practical common sense examples as well as good historical anecdotes. This book has no fluff and no superfluous chapters, it's all meat. Even if you have been doing PM for years, this book has something to offer.

Reading and understanding this book cover to cover will get you half way to your PMP certification. You will need to get a PMBOK or a PMP study guide and spend another 2 - 3 months of study. But this book is absolutely the right place to start.

Excellent resource for every IT Project Manager 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have purchased the fourth and fifth editions of this book and find them as great resources both for academic studies and as tools to be used in the real world for project management through every stage of the project development lifecycle. The examples in the text are real scenarios and help to provide a good understanding on the issues with PM and how to overcome many challenges with Project Management within an organization.

This book recreates the experience of dozens of projects, both successful and failed, to provide a real-world context for learning.

Editorial Review:

The definitive history of Hewlett-Packard and its legendary founders, based on unprecedented access to private archives

This is the most authoritative version ever of the most famous start-up story in business history. In 1938, working out of a small garage in Palo Alto, California, two young Stanford graduates named Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard built their first product, an audio oscillator. It was the start not only of a legendary company but of an entire way of life in Silicon Valley—and, ultimately, our modern digital age.

Others have written about the rise of Hewlett-Packard, including Packard himself in a bestselling memoir. But acclaimed journalist Michael S. Malone is the first to get the full story, based on unlimited and exclusive access to corporate and private archives, along with hundreds of employee interviews.

Malone draws on his new material to show how some of the most influential products of our time were invented, and how a culture of innovation led HP to unparalleled success for decades. He also shows what was really behind the groundbreaking management philosophy—"the HP Way"—that put people ahead of products or profits.

There have been attempts in recent years to discredit the HP Way as soft and outdated. But Malone argues that the HP Way was a hard-nosed business philosophy that combined simple objectives, trust in employees to make the right choices, and ruthless self-appraisal. It created an innovative and ferociously competitive company—arguably the world’s greatest company.

This business adventure story will be perfect for entrepreneurs, young managers, and students, not to mention the tens of thousands of current and former HP employees.

Editorial Review:

There’s a common belief that cyberspace cannot be regulated-that it is, in its very essence, immune from the government’s (or anyone else’s) control. Code, first published in 2000, argues that this belief is wrong. It is not in the nature of cyberspace to be unregulable; cyberspace has no “nature.” It only has code-the software and hardware that make cyberspace what it is. That code can create a place of freedom-as the original architecture of the Net did-or a place of oppressive control. Under the influence of commerce, cyberspace is becoming a highly regulable space, where behavior is much more tightly controlled than in real space. But that’s not inevitable either. We can-we must-choose what kind of cyberspace we want and what freedoms we will guarantee. These choices are all about architecture: about what kind of code will govern cyberspace, and who will control it. In this realm, code is the most significant form of law, and it is up to lawyers, policymakers, and especially citizens to decide what values that code embodies. Since its original publication, this seminal book has earned the status of a minor classic. This second edition, or Version 2.0, has been prepared through the author’s wiki, a web site that allows readers to edit the text, making this the first reader-edited revision of a popular book.

Well suited for use as a text in courses called "Introduction to microcomputers" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It has been a few years since I taught a college course that could be described by the phrase, "Introduction to microcomputers", and I am not sure when I will do so again. Nevertheless, I still occasionally examine books looking for a really good one that could be used to teach the class. That was the context within which I examined this book.
I found it very suitable for such a course and would have no trouble using it as a text. The explanations are within the range of understanding that the students of such courses possess. There are a large number of colorful illustrations and a large set of questions appears at the end of each chapter. What I really loved about the book is the large number of quotes. Once I opened the book, I leafed through it reading all of them. It was a microcosmic lesson in the history of computing, scientific advancement and how computers are altering society.
I can strongly recommend this book as a text in any course that can be described by the phrase "Introduction to microcomputers." It has all the required material and a great deal of tasty "informational sugar."

Editorial Review:

Much needed advice for those who run online communities 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As many online forums as there are, sadly there are only very few titles out there that deal with the topic. Until now, the best one (now out of print) was Design for Community. But Patrick O'Keefe has changed this for good with this amazingly comprehensive title that is packed with great (and fairly timeless) advice about how to start, develop, promote and manage your online community. Two chapters at the end deal with tips on how to keep your online forum interesting and how to monetize it.

Personally, the only downside I found in the book is that it has a very heavy emphasis on forums (phpBB, more specifically), leaving outside some of the aspects specific to social media. However, the knowledge that the author has included in here can be relatively easily ported to help folk wanting to manage social networks or other social applications.

As for me, I am getting a copy of the book for each of the Administrators in my communities.

Editorial Review:

Every day, millions of users log into their favorite online forums to keep up on the latest trends in music, politics, entertainment, and current events. Each of these communities is led by administrators who must make tough decisions, deal with difficult users and manage the staff. Legal constraints, trolls, and technical issues can all turn the excitement of running an online community into chaos. With the right guidance, however, running forums can be a pleasure, not a chore. Patrick O'Keefe has spent years developing and managing his own online communities. Now, he shows readers how they can make their lives easier by making the right decisions about every aspect of their forums. From developing their site to choosing the right employees, "Managing Online Forums" is the one book that shows site administrators how to create a safe, entertaining, and informative community that users will return to again and again.

The Best GPO Book, Now In 4th Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is the 4th edition of this book and I buy every new edition that comes out. This particular edition includes major new updates for Vista, such as ADMX templates. I teach courses on Windows security at SANS and I recommend the latest version of Jeremy's GPO book at every conference to my attendees. This is one of the few must-have books for Windows network administrators.

havent read the book but I want to comment on the quality of the book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I just received this book and haven't read it yet. But I wanted to comment on the poor quality of the book itself. The paper used is very poor quality, feels like newspaper almost. Has a very recycled feel to it, and the edge is not crisp, it has a rough edge that sprays little paper dust particles everywhere whenever the book is handled. I tried to fan the pages to remove these particles but they just keep coming. I am considering returning this book and maybe buying it again later if they improve the printing process used on it.

Presenting a fully updated resource for Windows Vista that shows you how best to use Group Policy in order to take full advantage of Active Directory and create a managed desktop environment. Highly Recommended! 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

Editorial Review:

Global business demands and new technologies have created a virtual workplace for many companies, with employees and teams routinely collaborating from distant geographical locations on the road, from home, at client sites—even on the other side of the globe. The Distance Manager provides practical information and tools to help managers bridge the communication gaps created by geographical separation, and get peak performance from employees they rarely see. This handbook is perfect for sales managers, project team leaders, senior managers, and anyone who manages people at more than one location. Key topics include:
• Using e-mail, teleconferencing, and videoconferencing for maximum effectiveness
• Mastering the people skills required to manage from a distance
• Virtual team building, and strategies for managing multiple locations
