Editorial Review:

This book provides a comprehensive description of Radio Access Networks for UMTS . The main content is based upon the release 6 version of the 3GPP specifications. Changes since the release 99 version are described while some of the new features from the release 7 version are introduced.

Starting from the high-level network architecture, the first sections describe the flow of data between the network and end-user. This includes a dedicated chapter describing the Iub transport network. Detailed descriptions of both HSDPA and HSUPA reflect the increasing importance of efficient high data rate connections. Signalling procedures are described for speech, video and PS data connection establishment, SMS data transfer, soft handover and inter-system handover. The more practical subjects of link budgets and radio network planning are also addressed.

  • More than 180 example log files reinforce the reader's understanding
  • Summary bullet points allow rapid access to the most important information
  • Focus upon how data is transferred between the network and end-user
  • Dedicated chapters provide detailed descriptions of both HSDPA and HSUPA
  • Step-by-step analysis of common signalling procedures
  • Key radio network planning subjects addressed

Radio Access Networks for UMTS is ideal for mobile telecommunications engineers working for equipment vendors, operators and regulators. It will also appeal to system designers, technical managers and students.

Editorial Review:

Wireless Communications presents the most comprehensive coverage of this field which, in only a decade, has grown from a niche market into one of the most important industries. While previous systems were generally intended to provide mobile speech communications, mobile data communications have since developed.

This essential textbook on the principles and applications of mobile radio is an all-encompassing current treatment of the area, addressing both the traditional elements, such as Rayleigh fading, BER in flat fading channels, and equalization, and more recently emerging topics like multi-user detection in CDMA systems, OFDM and smart antennas. These fundamentals are related to practical systems, and the dominant wireless standards, including cellular, cordless and wireless LANs, are discussed.

  • A comprehensive and current treatment of a very hot topic, one of the fastest growing fields of communications
  • Topics featured include: wireless propagation channels, transceivers and signal processing, multiple access and advanced transceiver schemes, and standardized wireless systems
  • Combines mathematical descriptions with intuitive explanations of the physical facts, to assist readers in acquiring a deeper understanding of the area

Wireless Communications is an essential text for advanced undergraduate students with a working knowledge of standard digital communications, graduate students and practising engineers. It will also be an invaluable source of reference for wireless communications engineers.

Cisco Wireless LAN Security is an in-depth guide to wireless LAN technology and security, introducing the key aspects of 802.11 security by illustrating major wireless LAN (WLAN) standards that can protect the entire network. Because a WLAN is less effective as an isolated piece of the network, this book emphasizes how to effectively integrate WLAN devices into the wired network while maintaining maximum security.

Cisco Wireless LAN Security covers the spectrum of WLAN security, including protocols and specifications, vulnerabilities and threats, and, especially, deployment patterns and design guidelines. With a unique combination of theory and practice, this book addresses fundamental wireless concepts, such as WEP, and innovations, such as EAP, switching, and management. Each chapter includes detailed illustrations, checklists, design templates, and other resources. You will also find generic wireless deployment patterns based on real-world customer installations and functional examples of architecture, design, and best practices.

Whether you currently design, configure, implement, and maintain WLANs or simply want to explore wireless security issues, Cisco Wireless LAN Security has everything you need to understand how to create a seamlessly secure, impenetrable 802.11 network.

This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press¿ which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.

Non-Beginner Advanced Reference 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This title is for the schooled j2me coder. The material is rather advanced, and the topics covered involve programming you will only really see on the corporate level. If you have just got that phone from xxxxx- service provider, don't start here if you want to write a quick app or game. Instead, go to J2ME The Complete Reference from Osborne/McGraw Hill- this will prove more beneficial. I was able to gain knowledge of what my future held with Java Micro if I chose the path, and this book put everything into perspective. Thanks IBM ;)
Hope this helps

As an owner of a mid sized WISP, the author has captured the real life problem we experience both from a strategic and field perspective. From antenna alternatives, pros and cons of varying polarization, business issues to consider and multitudes of other factors that must be balanced to support a customer service organization delivering wireless internet services. Thanks! My entire staff was required to read this book cover to cover.

Best WISP guide Available 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book. The autor balances theory and practice perfectly. I just build a WISP from the scratch. I wouldn't be able to do this as fast and good as I did without the help of Mr. Unger's book.

Clunky reading 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I work for a chip company in the WiMAX space and we passed this one over for a training piece as there really isn't much on WiMAX in it. The editing and illustration seem a little out of joint as though its some sort of "formula book". Whats really missing is any reference to applications for WiMAX, that is, what is WiMAX to be used for? Who, exactly, would deploy WiMAX and why? The book spends 339 pages and doesn't really get to the point of the applicaitons for WiMAX.

It would have been real helpful if the author had actually interviewed some service providers to see how or where they would deploy WiMAX. Given all the other WiMAX books rushing to market, I give this one 2 stars.

Editorial Review:
